My two whippets have been attacked several times and now they think the best form of defence is to warn off the other dogs with as much gusto as possible :angry: , so I am trying to control two demented whippets and appologise to other dog owners for their behaviour. I make sure I only let my dogs off when no others are around (mind you they are fine off the lead and the one will run away while the other wants to play) but still people let their dogs off the lead and they run up to mine when they see I have mine on their leads and are trying to keep them under control. Well we have been trying everything to calm the situation stones in a bottle to distract them, food and walking the other way when we see any dogs approaching

Yesterday me, my husband and dad were just returning from a walk and had passed two dogs and the boys were great so things were fine . Only to have a dog who had escaped from it's backyard run up behind us and attack Pete, my dog didn't fight back he was in shock, the terrier cross would not stop in the end my husband had to kick it , it let go but came back so I flapped my coat at it and it came for me then ran off. We thought it had bitten the end of Pete's tail off blood everywhere, anyway it was still intact but we have bathed it and now dressed it 3 times the bleeding has just about stopped. He has a puncture wound to his leg and several little nips over his body . We thought it would mean a visit to the vets but things are ok, not sure if he will need antibiotics. Took him just to the end of the street and while I was picking up their poo :x a dog and his owner walked up behind us (on the other side of the road) and my dogs went mad , now we are back to square one :rant: , all this and my boys had done nothing :rant: Poor Pete he looks so sorry for himself. :wub:

so sorry to hear pete is hurt , try to contact the owner and explain as calm as you can what happened and see if they will at least ensure the dog doesnt escape again :thumbsup:

Sorry I can't help with advice about the situation but what I would say is that you really should get some antibiotics for Pete as it sounds as though it is quite a deep wound.

Infection can set in very easily and it could cause a serious problem which could mean Pete may have to have his tail amputated. I've seen this sort of thing before and you can't be too careful :thumbsup:

poor pete hope hes feeling himself soon :huggles: im so glad i can let my lot of leads every day and not have to worry about other dogs ,we always go in the forestry and right up on top of mountain ,so not many dogs around we do come across the odd one or 2 now and then but my lot are usualy pretty good ,joys of living in the country

Off to the vets in 20 mins to get him checked out and get some antibiotics and off to the owner of the other dog to explain things (I do feel sorry for it though, is it a bad dog or just had inexperienced owners, bought as a present as a puppy and then lost interest in?)

this also angers me beyond words.

on Sunday our two girls had a run in with a staffie

it was an awful moment that seemed to go in slow motion.

the chap saw us too late to put his obviously nasty dog on to its lead - he actually shouted WATCH OUT as his awful dog launched itself at my girls - by saying this he quite clearly knows that his dog is a problem.

i managed to grab bean and put her on a lead, talulla was still loose and looking so unsure - usually she greets dogs, wags and then they have a game - she just could not understand why this dog was being so nasty.

luckily for us the owner managed to grab his dog before too much damage was done - i am very thankful that talulla was wearing a coat as the dog latched on to this rather than her skin.

the man then proceded to beat his dog which in my humble opinion is just going to make the dog even more aggressive.

i screamed like a mad woman at the guy asking him why if he knew his dog was aggressive did he not have it on a lead and/or muzzled.

i truly send all my best wishes to you and your dogs - we had a near miss compared to you

Vet said Pete could lose the end of his tail it could go either way so fingers crossed, also the bite to the leg went into the muscle so badly bruised and ? cellulitis . Had injection of pain killer and antibiotics and brought some home for him. went to the owners house but no reply so left a note, but have heard nothing . Will post a pic of poor sad Pete later.

Poor Pete, hope he makes a speedy recovery!

I carry a walking stick these days and find that waving that at any strange dog approaching at speed often stops them in their tracks. Sounds awful I know but, after Rifle being attacked a couple of times, I'm quite wary.

What a horrible incident. It makes me so angry when people don't keep their dogs under control, or make any effort to train and socialise them properly. :angry:

Taz was attacked out of the blue by a collie recently - luckily not much damage, but after working so hard with him it's set him right back to being very wary with other dogs again.

I hope poor Pete is OK and recovers quickly :luck:

Thanks for your wishes I will pass them on to Pete in the way of cuddles. Put a letter through the door of the other dogs owner this morning but nothing!, what does that say :rant:

If he doesn't reply I would put another note through his door giving him a set time to reply before you contact the RSPCA/Dog warden/police or whoever else might get a responce,(I'd do it too if I didnt get a responce) once he does I would ask for the vet fees and for his dog to be kept under control at all times or you will take it further( I don't know where you'd take it :unsure: I would hope that worked before it came to that

It's sad to hear how many people share this experience - Skipper was attacked earlier this year by a collie that just ran out of a garden. We knew the owners so didn't do anything about it but it still rankles that they never offered us anything towards the vet bills.

what a shame purdey was recently attacked by a dog in the road, blasted thing was on the other side, with its owner, not on a lead, and as soon as he saw her, he bolted over :rant: mind you, the x got a nasty shock when he started :- " not quite sure he'll make the repeat mistake of starting on a stafford who was quite happy, minding her own business, and enjoying her walk :sweating: hes lucky she couldnt get a proper hold on him because i had her on lead. sadly, like you, purdey is now over sensitive to the presence of other dogs, and in all honesty i cannot trust her in the slightest :rant:

Sorry to hear this. It's a real problem and getting harder to avoid aggressive dogs.

While I was away a Shar-pei appeared out of nowhere and attacked Gelert (fortunately no wounds requiring surgery but he was quite badly bruised and very shaken). That was the 4th unprovoked attack in 2 years The last one was a GSD that pulled the lead out of a child's hand to attack; the owner took full responsibility and paid our vet bill immediately (though the dog has attacked 2 other dogs since then )

Just an update Pete doing fine all wounds healing thankfully his tail seems as though it will be fine :huggles: , so only £89 in vets bills :rant: , sent another letter to the women that own's the dog and rang, had a letter back saying her dog was in the house or chained up in the garden been down twice to the house but no answer and no sign of the dog. We walk past regularly so will keep a watch out. Dog warden couldn't do anything. Police siad difficult to prove.Pete anxious when out but understandable. All I can hope is what goes around comes around for that women :rant: Pete says thanks for the support :huggles:
