Is there anybody in NSW you could ask to look through their KC gazettes for the registration of Whippet litters born around the time this girl would have been born?  I have pm'd a few of the NSW K9'ers Lida, to make sure they see the thread

If she is from a registered litter it should not be too difficult to find who bred her. :)

I agree, and the fact that she has her dewclaws removed makes me suspect she is from a registered litter

I've just returned from a couple of weeks holiday and received Tesa's private post about this.

Personally, from past experience when dealing with RR rescue, I don't think anything is gained by naming and shaming breeders or owners. It's a pity the owner didn't contact the breeder or Club first so we could have assisted. The only thing that matters now is to find Ashlyn and her puppies good homes.

I'll contact Cordelias and offer to take Ashlyn and the pups if it will help them and notify all NSW whippeteers and ensure we refer enquirers to this litter.

Cheers

Unbelievable.  What are people like.
I've sent this thread onto Rhonda Tait - if anyone in NSW can help with this sort of thing, it is her. I think the chances of tracking down the owner/breeder of this girl are zero. In NSW you can now breed a litter, register it legally & elect not to have that litter recorded in the Journal. Maybe you can do it in other states too. I do hope this little girl & her puppies find good homes.

I am not suggesting naming and shaming. We do not even know what the real story is. It is quite posible that it is lot more complicated than somebbody dumping her because they were afraid of her having to have C-section. Relationship break up, illness or death in the family could all be factors in her getting pregnant in the first place and the decision to place her in the rescue.

But if she was one of mine i would be there trying to take home and provide the same care for her and her puppies (purebred or crossbred) as i would any of my litters. I would be very upset if I only found out later that people knew about her and did not let me know.

Rhonda advised the Club that although she is willing to help out, she is not able to run Whippet Rescue any more so we have people in various areas who have offered to assist. It's always better if the relevant state clubs are contacted in such instances and then they can disseminate and act on the information.

I've written to Cordelias offering assistance and a personal donation towards Ashlyn and her puppies.

As posted, there may be many reasons why she was surrendered pregnant and there are always two sides to a story. I've learnt long ago that we each have different ethics and morals and that as much as we may want, it's not a perfect world and we can't save every dog.

Ashlyn may well be from 'racing' kennels and we may never know her history. I've asked if she was microchipped and maybe we can then get her birthdate so we can check records and contact breeders who I'm sure would want to know.

In the meantime, let's all work on a positive outcome for her and her pups.

Cheers

I don't get on here very much but thought I would add my two cents worth.

From years of experience rescueing whippets, I totally agree with Toni's comments. Nothing is ever gained from shaming or outing people who for whatever reason can longer keep their whippets. It just causes the owner to be too frightened to surrender their whippets and they then just dump them on the streets. At least if they are surrendered to a pound or shelter without fear of retribution, the whippets are safe, fed and don't end up dead on the streets. If an owner no longer wants or can't keep their whippet anymore, the main issue is the whippets welfare and getting it a new home. I could write a book with all the far fetched stories I have been told on reasons why people cannot keep their dogs. I found it more useful to put all of my time and efforts into rehabilitating, desexing, micrchipping and getting the dog a forever home, rather than spending my time shaming and outing owners, breeders etc that at the end of the day don't give a damn.

Most of the whippets that I have rescued and rehomed over the past 8 years have had dew claws removed and this doesn't mean they come from a registered breeder. As Toni has said, many come from racing kennels. I once had to rescue 36 whippets from a racing kennel in one hit. Some backyard breeders also remove dew claws.

I have also taken in many whippets where the owner had phoned the registered breeder for advice and help in rehoming their whippet, just to be told that the breeder is unable to help as the dog is not their problem anymore and to phone me instead.

Unfortunatly, due to my husbands accident at work, I can't find the time to continue rescuing whippets, working full time and looking after the family. I am still advertising whippets on my website that require a new home or are in shelters or pounds. You will find the rescues that I know about listed on the rescue page of my Verdellho website. Just do a google search for Verdellho Whippets to find me. I am phoned every week by pounds around NSW that currently have whippets surrendered to them or are unclaimed strays. Ashyn is just one of many that end up homeless each week. Ashyn has been listed on my website since she has been in Cordelaia Canine Rescues, along with five other whippets currently looking for a home.

I know Jack from Cordelia's Canine rescue and Ashlyn and her pups are in very good and experienced hands. In fact Jack has taken in quite a few whippets in on my behalf when I have been too full to take in any more rescues. Unfortunatley, due to a council noise complaint, Cordelias Canine Rescues in being shut down in March unless Jack can raise the funds to sound proof her kennels. Jack does a great job and it would be dreadfully sad if he had to shut down.

While I understand and agree with why rescue centre's and clubs must have a no questioned asked policy, on K9 we are neither. Here on K9 we have an opportunity to highlight what has happened to Ashlyn, and have a very slim chance that the breeder may find out what happened to her. I can't see anything wrong with that, and if in the process someone recognizers her (and her owner), then the owner's peer's become aware of what they have done, even better.

BTW Toni you are quite right to donate  , wish I had thought of doing so earlier, but never mind have done it now

:)

What a beautifull girl and those pups are just

At least she wasn't just dumped anywhere and will get all the love and attention she deserves to bring up her brood

Actually the rescue that has her at the moment is in danger of closing down :( Complaints from nearby residents of noise I think. Cordelia is trying to raise enough money to soundproof the place so any donations are much needed.

I don't doubt for one second Janis, that Ashlyn has had the best of care.

I am sure that the people running this resue do the best they can, but i doubt that they would have the time or resourses to give "the best of care".

To start with they need proper whelping box with high sides, to keep the pups from faling out and getting lost. Anybody in Sydney who could lend one?

In the photo Ashlyn looks quite skinny, to be able to lactate properly and without loosing any more condition she needs to be fed at least 4 times a day, preferably more often. Large litters also need special attention to make sure all the pups are getting enough to eat, and none is getting pushed away.
