Bedlingtonxwhippet Question????

Hi,

I have found a whippet x bedlington terrier, first cross puppy. (Aparently the parents have papers. )

The mother is a mostly white whippet, the father is a sandy coloured bedlington.

At the moment the puppy is black, wire-haired.

What colour is it going to end up as?!!!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I may be wrong, and I'm sure someone else will know more than I do, but I would doubt that a black puppy came from those parents

i shouldnt worry to much about the colour of the parents,we mated 2 blues together and got blues and fawns :blink: they were all blue at birth but changed over three weeks or so.as you havent put the age of your pup its hard to say but if its 7or 8 weeks old theres a fair chance it`ll stay black (and rough coated) :thumbsup:

Thanks for your messages. She is 9 weeks and looks to be solid black (from photos). It seems bizarre that her parents are so pale in colour and she is so dark?!

(Although my mother owns a bearded collie who was black as a pup and is now very pale grey).

I've seen some bedlington X whippets which are pale grey, and some that are sandy. Is there any way of predicting the way they turn out?

(Her father is the sandy bedlington).

The black has probably come from the mother. Although she is white she is probably genetically black. She has a double pair of recessive genes which has restricted the spread of pigment in her coat so she looks white, but because Bedlingtons don't have that recessive gene, the father will have passed on a dominant solid coat gene which means that the puppy will be solid coloured. The black from the mother would dominate.

The other scenario is tha the father is really a dilute liver and so he is also genetically black and as whippets don't have the gene which dilutes to black to liver then the puppy would turn out black.

But Bedlingtons also have a dominant greying gene wich means that the puppy will turn blue.

Got It? Not at all complicated is it :lol:

When we got our Beddy at about 4/5 months old he was all blue except for his ears which were still jet black. They changed after another month or so.

If he gets an injury or a cut his fur grows back jet black & then changes to blue over a few weeks.

When I clip him he is a totally different colour underneath :blink:

Hi,

I have a beddie whippet who won smoothe pup at Peterborough game fair,and now he is shaggy!!The hairs appeared at 8 months,and kept coming.I say,part of the pleasure is waiting,and watching the changes,afterall,a Lurcher is a mongrel,so take loads of piccies as you pup grows.

Looks like the mother has black on her ear on the photo. The puppy looks gorgeous. I think I like whippet x bedlingtons because they look like small deerhounds :wub:

I've also got a Bedlington x Whippet (pup in signiture pics), she's only 10 weeks old at the moment but already her coat has got lighter and coarser from when we first got her. She looks very similar to your Storm, bones1380 so hopefully she'll turn out as lovely as yours has at 14 months

They are absolutely gorgeous dogs and I strongly recomend you snatch up the little pup you've seen as soon as possible if you haven't already done so, you won't regret it and you'll have plenty of fun finding out how she'll look, like I do with Elsie :thumbsup:

Well I collected her yesterday! And she is beautiful!! She looks quite different to your pups, her hair isn't as long and seems quite smooth, although rough bits are starting to come through and the odd long grey hair. Shes been a very good girl so far.... I'm in love! Heres some pics for you...
