Hi

I was just wondering which dog food other whippet owners consider to be the best?

When we brought Daisy home at 8 weeks old she was on Pedigree Complete puppy chicken and rice dry food which she seemed to enjoy (although she'd eat anything! (w00t) (w00t) ) but she had quite frequent tummy upsets (and it only had a minimum of 4% chicken  ) so we switched to Iams complete puppy chicken dry food. This has kept her in good condition but very occasionally she has days when she has a bit of a tummy upset and she won't eat it although she'll quite happily scoff her treats and Denta-sticks. This makes me think she doesn't really enjoy as much as she thought we did. She's 11 months now and she'll soon be going on to adult food; we were going to continue with Iams but I've read some bad reviews about it, not just about the poor quality of the food and the ingredients but also about the way Iams test their food on animals causing them unnecessary suffering. Plus, it is quite expensive, considering it's hardly "top of the range".

So which adult dog food do you think would be best for us to feed Daisy? Price doesn't matter too much; we only want the best for our doggy and I've heard that a lot of these expensive brands are good value for money because you don't need to feed as much.

Thanks so much for your replies

JMO but wet food I'd say Nature Diet and dry food CSJ.

Personally, I feed frozen meat (Prize choice) and Laughing Dog biscuit but try this for info (from the links page on my website so please let me know if it doesn't work)

We feed almost most days raw mince with some Royal Canin, i must say this seems to suit ours. If we are away at a show etc, they never object to a can of Butchers tripe.

Ben suffers with k9 IBS and the only thing that doesn't upset him other than chicken, rice and cooked fish is Butchers tripe, so that is what my boys have

hiya, if you want to stick to complete food i would check on the ingredients part for the ones that have meat first as a lot of them are more cereal based, james wellbeloved, and purina one are good makes, i would also add meat and shredded veg, just cut down the amount of dry. hope this helps

i fed crispy beef mince for dinner and supercoat dry buscuits mixed with puppy milk in a carton, for breakfast, she never seemed to have any probs when she was little :)

Harley has PRO-PLAIN dog food thats rli good

Trophy Petfoods do an excellent range. My 3 thrive on it - good protein, no animal derivatives.

Highly recommended.

On advice from k9ers I switched from Pedigree as well (breeder was feeding Pedigree so I stayed with it for a bit). We got James Wellbeloved (after closing my eyes at the price  ) - I was going for Arden Grange but my local supplier didn't have it and JW was the other I'd been recommended.

It's only been a few days but they LOVE it. I was having to put wet food in with Pedigree complete to get them to eat it so it was actually working our quite expensive to feed them what is frankly quite s**te! They will happily eat JW without mixing in wet food, although I do put a bit of warm water in to help it on its way and give them some wet food for a bit of variety for supper.

As they need less of the JW compared with Pedigree I don't think it will work out much more expensive and we've had no upset tums so far. All good. It's a minefield though - everyone will tell you something different.

Kendall is on royal canin vet early care skin and digest puppy, he is doing really well on it and realy enjoys it too. I think it is very much finding what suits your particular dog, what suits one may not suit another.

I feed the sheepdog and alsation value chunks as its cheap and basic but the whippets need a bit more so i find Autarky is really good value @ £20 a bag and they do really well on it

If you want to go for dried food Burns is also a good complete, Izzy likes it

hello there if its any help to you i work in canine and feline nutrtion? pedigree isn't so good as you gathered by the meat and animal deriatives in it. I work for a company called Pets corner. We are all about advising good food for cats and dogs mainly helping skin problems and genrel health along the way. there are alot of good foods on the market at the moment dry and wet theres so much to choose from. But as a nutritionist i feed a dry food called organi pets with organic chicken and rise high meat content also frozen natures menu nuggets are there best raw frozen food to feed in my opinion. Pouches or tins wise again natures menu, applaws(not complete would need complete mixer) nature diet or james wellbeloved pouches. Dry foods are royal canin, nutro choice, james wellbeloved, organi-pets, first class etc. eukanuba and iams are sort of the middle part of the scale. Pedigree, beta, pal, chappie, bakers and genreal super market brands are the bottem end of the scale. (these bottem end scale foods can make your dog have bad breath, loose stools, odour to the coat and bad teeth as it contains various sugars, parts of different animals and alot of salt, preservatives ec additives and colourants. all making your dog unhealthy sometimes itchy also fat. I will say people obviously feed these foods and everyone is entilted to what they feed there beloved friend hope thats a little better. :) can you see i don't switch off from work heehee if you need any other advise even with injurys skin problems etc between me and my work friends we usually come up with the answer. dee x

What qualifications do you need to be a pet nutritionist?

Daisy is lovely!!

I feed Skinners Duck and Rice - fabulous food - VAT free as its Field and Trial range - just under £20 for 15kg sack. My dogs do extremely well on it. It is free from wheat gluten, maize gluten, barley gluten, soya and dairy products. Free from artifical flavourings, colourants and preservatives.
