Billy here, i felt i had to reply to youre statement about there being more WhippetxGreyhounds about now than there used to be.And i have to say that i totaly disagree with that statement.Simple reason being, most shows now have maybe one under 23 race ,maybe two 4 dog races if youre lucky .when i was racing Snipe, there were so many unders we had to run 4 times over maybe 4or 5 hundred yards,it was similar for Tarn. One club even began having a race for novice dogs too.Just look at Chatsworth,1st time i went i had never seen so many dogs racing in my life.there was something like 11 heats of unders, and as many in the overs. It was some achievement to even reach the semi's let alone the final.1st year i had 3 in semi's and 1 in the final,The last year i was over there was still a big number of heats 10 unders and 9 overs, and i reached the final in both,my Silver dog ending his racing carear in the overs final whilst two lengths in front, and another winning the sim one day and gettin beat in the final the next day after puttin her sister out in the semi. But now even Chatsworth has 2 or 3 heats of unders n overs, although i hear that it is picking up a bit now.another thing i think i need to say here is that when i raced there was the creggans, the moore's,Fall's, Craig's Greer's,Mc Grinders,Vall hamilton,Sky the father of my pups came after i quit, and there was another one of my pups that Graham ried had who was on top till he retyred, and many more who had fast racing bred dogs ,mostly Whippet xGreyhounds,it was tough then to stay on top .Now theres nothing in the unders realy exept rose who's had it to herself realy for the last few years, with no opposition.Although ive got to hand it to her ,she went further afield looking for it and beat what ever she found. There's a few in the overs at the minute ,but anyone of them could be top dog next year going by the All Ireland final this year.My own bitch was one of them ,and to be honest she cant run, never could. In fact her whole litter according to Dazgail could'nt lift a leg. One thing i do know is that my own bitch is almost a second slower than Tarn was and over a second slower than Cornish Jack ,a brother to Grahams Dream +Cornish Bob which i owned. Now he was a fast dog,won All Ireland by over 20 lengths to the dog that was unbeaten at the time.16.67 for 300 yds.Tarn 17.01` old track, roughly 16 90 now.so you see ,dogs arnt as quick as they used to be,but then at the minute they dont have to be.But hey , i hope youre right ,and there is lots of dogs about ,it would be great to see the good old days coming back,n everything put back in its proper order(dig, dig)Anyway ive said to much here,, but it had to be said.Ihope nobody feels offended by anything ive said.It wasnt meant to offend, just imform.Fact is fact....Anyway ill have nothin for next year as the pups will still be to young so good luck everyone.

[/quote ................................................................................

.................................... .Hey,just looking at all these big fancy signatures sayin what you're dogs have won, sort of thing .Well ive been trying to do that for a couple of days now ,John, GOD bless him has even been trying to help me ,but its no good ,im going to have to buy a new computer or something, cause this one just cant cope with so much stuff,HA HA... Joke, with jag of course.

In answer to your comments Billy.I agree Chatsworth isn't what it used to be,but not all dogs that raced then and race today are whippet/greyhounds.Chatsworth certainly doesn't have the pull in the racing today that it had in years gone by.We're I don't agree entirely with you is that I think there are more quality bred whippet/greyhounds racing in England now,and to say that dogs racing now are slower than past dogs is a big generalisation on your part. You only speak from your times on your own dogs not on anybody elses dogs.Plus were they solo runs or races.(Anything can happen in a race)The thing is Billy I dont mean to offend you in any way but just because you haven't produced dogs that are as fast as previous dogs you have owned doesn't mean anybody else hasn't managed to do it.With a bit of luck these pups of yours will be as fast as your previous dogs, and we'll see you sometime in the future, when the pups are ready ofcourse. :D Karen

I also want to add that Rose as travelled over to England and won on numerous occasions, including The Midland and Lurcherworld finals and she as raced and beaten some quality dogs not just average dogs.If thats what you mean by having her own way Billy then good luck to her,Tori as certainly proved her worth

Where have you been Mark. It's been a bit quiet on here. How you doing? :D Karen

Billy, the utmost respect goes out to you for what you have achieved over the past number of years in the lurcher racing scene in Northern Ireland. I for one think it is wrong to compare lurchers from the past to the current batch of racing lurchers. I know there were large numbers of dogs who turned up at the lurcher racing events in years gone past...but quantity is no substitute for quality. A number of years ago one could have won with a pedigree whippet/greyhound but there is a vast difference between ped. whippet/greyhounds and non-ped whippet greyhounds. I think you would agree with me that once more non-ped whippet/greyhounds were introduced to Northern Ireland the lurcher races became more difficult to dominate as in previous years. Where once you may have dominated, others like Billy Craig were bringing in good quality pups and winning with them. Graham Reid also had great success with the dogs he bought from you or from across the water. I have only a very limited experience with racing lurchers and was very fortunate to obtain in my biased opinion one of the fastest lurchers to have ever raced in Northern Ireland :- " and i have the times on printed paper to validate this belief....note i said one of the fastest and not fastest, as i am not that presumptious. When we have a fast dog we want to know just how fast our dogs are and England is the place where we find out. One of the ambitions i didn't fulfill was to race in one of the BWRA bend championships as i believe that is where the fastest dogs in the UK are to be challenged, but with all the travelling etc etc involved it would take a real special dog to achieve this. Rose has had an unbelieveable year with Torri and i hope she continues with the success. John with Colt has also had a super year both here and in the mainland but has just lacked that bit of luck that's needed....as others will testify. Frankie with Ellie May and her brother have won many races in Nothern Ireland...just hope he is able to get Ellie Mays toe sorted out for next year. With your pups and maybe others being brought in it should make for an interesting couple of years to come.

MarkBrick without sounding cheeky if those pups are so fast, have a go at one of the non-ped championships. Now that is a challenge for any lurcher :- "
