right then, when gyp's first came to live with us, i took her to the vets to get her nails cut as i wasn't brave enough to try myself :b

but since they need doing fairly often i decided i didnt really want to keep lining my vets pockets when really i should try doing it myself!

easy i hear you say :)

well not in our case, she was never happy letting the vets do it, and is getting worse everytime i try!!!

i have tried doing it when she is relaxed, tried when she is asleep.........but she is sooo worried about it she's starting to snap a bit ...........doesnt seem to be aggressive, but just letting me know........GET THE HELL AWAY FROM ME WITH THOSE THINGS :- "

any advice, i have ordered a cloth muzzle (hasnt arrived yet) do you think that could make her worse?

or should i just go back to the vets and let them do it??

all advice gratefully welcomed, as she has some short nails and some that really need doing!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks

I dont think any dog really likes to have there nails clipped hely, best thing you can do for starters is this, when gypsy is on your settee, you sit next to her and just generally handle her paws, dont look at the dog whilst doing this, depending on the dogs temperament and character, i can guarrantee in a few hrs perhaps even days, gypsy will allow you to handle her paws, then we will go onto clipping, sorry you are so far away, or i would do em for you

keith x

i have the same problem with mine but phoebes the worst,i hold the dog while graham cuts :sweating: well all apart from phoebe :( i keep them in one place with cat biscuits :- " and they allow there claws cutting while getting a few treats  with phoebe she wont have any of it and i usually pick her up take her outside and graham trys to cut hers but i do get kicked about in the process :sweating: we are just managing with her at the moment .

its one of the hardest jobs

should also say i bought a dremel which i didnt have any luck with :(

i am doing this keith and she's fine with it..........i also always have the nail trimmers out so she has got used to seeing them!

as soon as i put them anywhere near her nails she freaks out, we have tried to hold her while the other one does the nails but its just harder and harder and she's getting really stressed by it :(

thanks for that trish, i guess some dogs just dont like having it done :(

guess we will just have to keep going and hope she doesnt end up biting one of us :- " (thats why i ordered the muzzle)

we have been doing a few a day to see if the more we do it the more she gets used to it.................mmm not really working!

we got them from the vet keith, they are the same as they use.............dont know what there called..........sorry :- "

look like something you would use in the garden :b

Not sure if this works with dogs, but it is a technique used with horses (doesn't always work though!! )

Get her used to seeing the nail clippers all the time. Hold them while you are having a cuddle, hold them when you are standing next to her and she is eating, etc.

Do this for just a couple of minutes and gradually build up the time.

Also get her used to having her paws held/touched and then when she is happy with the clippers near her, get her used to having her paws held while you are holding the clippers.

When all is happy, try to clip one nail. If she doesn't like it then go back a step.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

just to add.........im getting stressed out about it as well, i feel its something i should be able to do :(

Summat you use in the garden, then were talking large, perhaps the size of the trimmers are putting gypsy off, have you no ordinary nail clippers, if so just lay those on her feet whilst shes on the settee with you., use your womanly charms on her, come on hely, promisse me youll buck up

keith

I did Jinny's, initially with ordinary nail clippers, every week from 9 weeks old when her claws were smaller than the cats claws

I think because of this she has never minded me doing anything with her toes - she just lies on her back and lets me do them :)

But this isn't any good for Gypsy now so I had a thought ............

How about trying to 'cat wrap' her so that she can't kick and wriggle and just leave the one leg out that you want to clip. If you get OH to hold her, all wrapped up, and you clip then maybe you could get her done??

I'd willingly come and give you a hand if we lived nearer

We have exactly the same thing with Jazz.

I only have to open the "Cupboard of Doom" (vetinary cupboard/treats) and she slinks away under the dining table and won't come out - even for a choc drop or two.

We usually have to resort to containing ourselvs in the kitchen with the door closed, one holds her and the other clips one nail - then that's it for at least a week or so.

Forgive me if I am telling you something you already know, but if you are stressed the dog will sense that and think there must be something to worry about.

Don't panic if you can't do it. Maybe take the dog to the vet to get them done for now until you have practised and feel comfortable. Or, also, ask the vet to give you a lesson/help.

You will get there! :huggles:

thanks guys.......

keith your mad!!

im not stressed when we are trying to do it as i know she will pick up on that, just get a bit aaarrggggg afterwards cos i think i should be able to do it!

i will try that jinnyfizz, but shes quite a big bugger and very strong :sweating:

if all that fails, its back to the vets and they can do my dirty work for me..........after all they charge enough :- " (w00t)

I know exactly how you feel. :huggles: Fred used to struggle and scratched and screamed at having his nails clipped. I hated it too. My local petshop owner helped out for a while..I'd hold and he'd clip...but I'd still end up with scratches all the same.

I eventually invested in a dremel. Fred still tries to slink off when he sees me get the dremel out, but he will now stand quietly and have his nails sanded. I have to offer him a gravy bone after each succeesful round (this is the key..reward them when they allow you to touch their nails with it)...but it's worked. :sweating: :sweating:

why the hell am i mad, look i invite any dog into my company, and if at the end of the day i cant clip that dogs nails, ill plat shit, does gypsy know who the boss is

Let her see the clippers around the house .....It sounds mad but pretend to cut you and your family's nails with them ....Stress free, loads of fun and laughs .......Play with her feet and flick her nails with your nails as this adds sound and pressure to her toes ........ When you clip her first nail praise her happily but not to OTT and treat her ......In the mean time teach her the command "flat" ........ build it up slowly :luck: :luck: Hannah
