It is now only 5 days until we go to collect DeeDee!! I'm so excited it's unbelievable!! But I’m also feeling nervous and anxious too - she's so perfect I don’t want to do anything wrong, or forget to do something, so I have some (hopefully) last questions for you all... :)

We'll be going to get her fairly early on Saturday morning, as her breeder suggested that the longer she has at home with us settling in before bedtime the better.

We've decided that I’ll sit in the back with her on my lap for the journey home. It's going to be about a 2 and 1/2 hour trip. I'm going to wear some old jogging bottoms etc and have old towels, kitchen towel, poop scoop, baby wipes, water, and a plastic sheet over the back seat.

She'll have a fleecy blanket, and a towel with her siblings smell on it.

Is there anything else I should have with me? Is it a good or bad idea to have some treats on the journey? I don’t want her to be sick, but wondered if 2 and half hours is too long to go without a snack for her??

Also should we stop on the way home at all? I've read the FAQ section avidly, but I’m still unsure if she'll need to stretch her legs/toilet or if getting home ASAP is best? She won’t have had any jabs yet.

Once she's home, should she go straight into her bed/be allowed to explore the kitchen on her own for awhile to calm down, or should we stay with her/let her explore the whole house?

At bedtime, will leaving a light on be any comfort to her, or will it not make a difference?

Any other advice anyone wants to give would be great!

Sorry for the long post - just want to get everything right! :sweating:

Sounds like you have thought of most things. The travel plans sound fantastic  . Best not to stop on the way home. Our Esme managed three and a half hours, and didn't have any accidents, Tess threw up everywhere in a two hour journey, and some have other sorts of accidents too :x , but I think that you will have enough stuff to mop up with :p . Snack on the journey home will probably make an accident more likely.

When you get home I would play it by ear- see how she feels. She may well have slept the whole way home so want to play and have a look around. I would limit the area in which she can explore at first and slowly expand it so she realises the extent to her territory and where to treat as home (ie where not to got to the loo). We kept Esme down stairs for about a week and she has only just started climbing the stairs herself (and only with permission) at 17 weeks. She was charging up and down the downstairs house and garden (admittedly very small) by the first evening.

Hope this helps, bet you can't wait.

as above you sound like you have most things covered....Bean managed a 41/2 hour journey home and was sick once :x

No treats and no stops...

Good luck :luck:

Oh and you forgot the camera  :- "

How exciting for you, I bet you can't wait!!

I think you have covered everything, just have to wait for Saturday morning now!!

Good luck :luck: this will be a very long wait ......... but worth it.

How exciting :D

Star managed a 5 hour journey (w00t) slept all the way -_- had a poo and wee in the garden then went straight off to sleep in her cage. it was the best she has ever behaved :b

I'd put her in the garen until she goes to the toilet and then let Dee Dee decide if she wants to sleep or if she wants to investigate, but yes I would follow the little monkey around and supervise her if she decides to explore.

Not sure if you have other dogs and if you need to think how you will introduce them?

If she is going to be an only dog I would have her in a cage next to my bed so she doesnt feel so lonely, but it's a personal thing.

As Kim has said - dont forget the camera :luck:

have you considered buying a dap?(dog appeasing pheromone) diffuser(they come in a plug or spray form)...they release pheromones to help calm in stressful siuations...or bachs flower remedies....rescue remedy added to the water?..they really help imo..best of luck :luck: and dont worry just take it as it comes and you will be fine

Take few poo bags in case she is sick and you can catch it in them, saves cleaning up if she is sick.

It is so lovely to bring a friend home....hope the weather is kind on day of collection.

Just one other thought - I know someone suggested putting her in a cage by your bed at night (good idea) - there is also something called 'snugglesafe' which might give her comfort on her first night without canine family!!

http://www.snugglesafe.co.uk/heatpad.htm

I believe you can get them from Petsmart - or is it called Pets at home nowadays?

Best of luck on your new adventure - sounds as though you are a planner!!! - best way to be of course.

You could ask the breeder if there is a small blanket or towel that you could bring home with familiar scent on it.

Remember to collect a diet sheet which includes times of feeding as well as the type of food used (you can gradually change over to your preferred food)

Check if worming has been done, and when the next worming would be due.

Remember to collect KC forms for change of ownership etc. and of course the pedigree.

Once home, she will need to stretch her legs and hopefully go outside to empty.

It would be nice if her mealtime coincides with when you have been home half an hour or so.

One slightly OTT thing which I always do... is to take a large water container and ask the breeder to fill this with water from home!!

I do this because water varies so much from area to area and I have known it to upset an adult's tummy. I prefer to introduce as little change as possible.

By day 3 I am usually mixing water from the previous home with water from our home and it works well.

Sometimes anticipation is just sooooooooooo thrilling - bet you are counting the days/hours/minutes.

sorry, just seen you have already sorted the fleecy blanket with reminders from siblings....!!

:luck: with Deedee's journey, hope you're lucky and she sleeps all the way. Ella snoozed most of our 2 1/2 hr journey, then most of first day too, she hardly drank or peed, so don't be surprised if that happens to yours, read lots of others do that on K9. Also for what seems like weeks she picked up every stone, every flower head, stick etc in the garden and we were frantic getting them out of her mouth, 'spose it's there way of investigating.

Persevere with the collar, they hate it but get used to it in the end. A new puppy collar will fit, the 1st one gets scratched to bits so don't get a fancy one just yet !!

hope to see her pic soon. :luck: :luck:

Awwww good luck, we will need lots of pics, all mine have had 3/4 hour journeys to bring them home and I can't add to the sound advice you've got already,if she's on your knee she will probably sleep, if you have other dogs I would bring her in and hold her while the others have a good sniff and then like the others says let her investigate a bit, be prepared for a couple of sleepless nights just incase, this gets better as they settle it's all worth it

Don't worry just enjoy her :huggles:

.........3 Sleeps to go now..... :luck:

Yep, as Janimal just said .... 3 days to go!!!! I'm driving everyone in work crazy with my counting down :D (I work 4 hours a day by the way usually, but I have the next 3 weeks off work, and my partner has 3 weeks after that off, then i'm back in for just 2 hours a day for a further fortnight after that. Just in case anyone was just about to grill me about my working hours :p )

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions - the taking some water home with us was a good idea thank you, and for reminding me not to forget to actually take home all her papers!

We have already collected her puppy pack the last time we went to visit, which has the food she's on, diet sheet etc in it.

We dont have another dog, but we do have a cat. We're hoping that the Felifriend plug in we've got for her though, will keep her doped up enough to take it all in her stride  It seems to be working so far - she spent an hour lying underneath it last night with her face pressed againt the skirting board

I will post some pictures of her as soon as she's settled in a bit, over the weekend.

:)

Looking forward to seeing the pics of the new baby!
