I am fetching my gorgeous black whippet puppy today even though she is only 6 and a half weeks old. I really hope she will be okay but she isn't being socialised at all and I do want her to get used to normal household noises as well as my two cats. The breeder seems to be thinking of them more as working dogs, even though his ad said they would be great pets too, so they have been kept away from the house and the mother (read 'breeder himself') is sick of them now and although I was going to leave her for a while longer, I got a call the other day asking when I could fetch her as she is the last one. I have reason to believe this isn't true but I don't want him to possibly ill treat her so have decided to bring her home much to the delight of my daughter :) I can't wait to see her, last time we visited she was only 4 weeks old so I guess she has grown up a lot and developed her personality some more :D
 
That sounds like a good decision you have made - good luck with your new baby. She will need lots of cuddling :wub: :wub: :wub:

Ooh good, I think I can manage that ;) Can't wait to give her lots of cuddles, she's such a little sweetie :wub:
 
Hi Lynnie

I hope all goes well with you and your pup (we got our two at 7 1/2 weeks)...having never owned a dog in the past I bought "Puppies for Dummies" which has loads of useful info (including about getting "young" pups). It's an easy read and very informative.

Well, slight change of plan, my daughter is feeling under the weather so we are going to wait until Monday to collect Misha. Hopefully by then Sara (my daughter) will feel better and Misha gets to spend another couple of days with her mom and siblings.
 
um, seems I'm the only one... but is this really a breeder you should be getting a pup from? :unsure:

I believe the fact that pups can leave mum not before 8 weeks is actually law?! has she had her first vacination? is she dewormed? and to think that other pups have gone even before 6 weeks :angry:

oh, and by the way, is the breeder keeping a pup for himself?

It's a difficult one, isn't it? On the one hand if you buy a pup from a breeder like this you might be encouraging bad practice, but on the other I bet this little soul is in desperate need of a responsible and loving home.

it is - but either way it just encourages them to carry on with their practice, they don't care that you buy the pup because you feel sorry for it as long as the mney keeps coming in.
 
It's so wrong to take a puppy away from the litter at 6 weeks. The only reason people do it is because the bitch has really finished feeding them and the breeder cannot be bothered to wean them properly. Cost money. I thought it was illegal to sell a puppy under 8 weeks old.

Either way, if people take pups so early, it makes life easier for the breeder to get on with having another litter, and so it will go on.

It is time there was some legislation to prevent this sort of thing going on.

I feel sorry for the pups and their mother. Not the way to go about things IMO. :rant:
 
I think, please someone correct me if I'm wrong, that there's nothing in law that specifies the age at which a pup can be removed from Mum, the 8 weeks thing comes from the age at which the KC will accept transfer of ownership. The law takes a broader 'welfare' approach, after all there are situations, however few and far between, when it can be better for the pups to be rehomed sooner. Years ago 7 weeks was considered by many a good age to start pups in their new homes, but ideas change.

I've had a 5 week pup after the bitch died, and a 6 week pup when the breeder was struggling after breaking her leg ... everything worked out fine both times. Good luck with your new 'baby'.

It's a good point but we covered that in a previous post. In an ideal situation I wouldn't take her before 8 weeks and you make a good point about not encouraging him, but it worries me to think what someone like this may do if left with several puppies, especially considering that he has obviously had enough of them, so 'rescuing' Misha a week early may be the best idea.

Actually, I'd appreciate some advice here too if you don't mind. I asked the breeder today whether I need to buy puppy milk but was assured that wasn't necessary as she is drinking water but what do you guys think? Also, given that she was very smelly last time I met her, can anyone recommend a shampoo that I can buy for her (available in the UK) please.
 
good luck with your whippet pup...we got peggy at 7 1/2 weeks and she was fine...and she was my first ever dog and she wasnt vaccinated, some owners dont like to vacinated until 12 weeks...and im sure you'l be taking her to the vet to be checked in due course

i bet you cant wait for monday...please post some pics of her once settled
 
:) Good luck with your new baby, I know in an ideal world they should be at least 8 weeks but things don't always work out perfectly. I'm sure she'll be fine, and you are doing the right thing by getting her out of that situation. xx

I've never had a teeny puppy - Tiny was 8 months old when I had him but I daresay puppy milk won't harm her, you can also get colostrum if she needs her immune system building up - I gave it to Tiny and he shot up 4 inches!

I don't know about shampoo I would guess plain warm water would be best. I've always used a mild shampoo like Johnson's baby shampoo if they've really needed it but I would think using shampoo on such a young puppy would be a bit too strong.

I'd love to see some piccies when you have her! :)
 
rescuing is not the right word to use - you are after all paying for it.

In some countried the 8 weeks is in fact law.
 
i have all mine on puppy milk till about 14 weeks then they have goats milk. try and fined out whats shes been fed so you can get the same in and slowly ween her over to what you want to give her as a quick change of diet can give her the trotts and feed little and often ususly its 4 fed a day but cos shes so young if she needs 5 let her have it. as you dont kown what sort of diet mums been on a good suplimet like strong bone might be an idea aswell.

I have this for Blue (although he's over two not a puppy :- ) It's really rare I ever need to use it though - has to have been a particularly messy walk to bring out the puppy shampoo!!!

Good luck with your puppy when you get her. I know your head is possibly telling you one thing about this breeder but your heart will be telling you to save your wee girlie.
