I'm sorry I know this has been covered many times probably, but I can't find a thread that answers my questions!

I want to get a crate for Bluebell that will

a - fit on benches

b - be a comfortable size for her

c - will be safe and escape proof

I do like the look of the canvas ones as they are light weight and look comfy - opinions please!

I've looked at canvas ones in these sizes

60cm long - 45cm wide - 50cm high

20" x 20" x 25"

70cm long - 52cm wide - 50cm high

What do you who do shows with whippets think - Blue is 18.5 to shoulder and 11 months old

Thanks as always

a friend of ours used the canvas one and her whippet chewed its way out. Great if you aren't going to leave them. We now use the metal cage ones for shows with a padlock on. At least we know they cannot escape and having seen one that did it puts you off

Thank you for that

What sizes should I be looking at in cages for comfort and to fit on a bench please?

76cm Length x 53cm Width x 60cm Height

30" Long x 21" Wide x 24" High

Would this be ok size wise for a metal cage?

We have a canvas and a metal one. The canvas is fine if you know that you are going to with them absolutely all day but I would be a bit wary if there were going to be periods of time when you'r not able to be sat by the crate.

Naught Ruby Tuesday escaped out of the canvas one at SYWC a couple of months ago! So we're much happier with them being in a metal one where possible

Thanks  That's decided me, not going to risk Bluebell going on a jaunt, not that I will be leaving her, but better safe etc - right off to ebay :b

My dog seems to prefer canvas ones. I guess they feel more like a nest since it's not so see thru. Tough if the cage has cover and you get a comfy matress or bed or nest in there, it's not such a big differense for the dog. Canvas one is a bit lighter and easier to carry, but it does have so much weight also that you won't be happy to drag it around.

If your dog is happy with the canvas thing, I'm sure you don't really have to worry about your dog destroying it and then running around. Personally I can pretty much leave the door open and trust Frija to stay there, she comes to me when she doesn't want to sleep anymore. BUT if you doubt your dog might want to brake trough the thing, it propably will.

:) Before Ozzy was poorly I got him a canvas one that he learned to unzip within half an hour  so I bought a wire one

Never had a problem with a canvas on, mine love it!!!!!!!

Yea, that's the size you want. I have one that size for Ruby which I use at home or in the car, but I find it too heavy for carrying into shows. If I was buying another I would buy the same size but a lightweight one. I have her puppy one which is the size smaller and I can carry that more easily but don't like to leave her too long in that one as it is a bit cramped. However that's the one I usually take into a show because of the weight. I am getting old though

I was at a show here in Canada last summer where six or seven dogs of another hound breed were housed in canvas kennels in an area adjacent to ringside. It was a day with high winds and the threat of a thunderstorm. As the storm rolled in the winds became almost gale like and debris flew across the rings from everything not nailed down firmly. Every single one of the dogs in the canvas tents were sent rolling and flying across the show ground in those lightweight carriers (we don't have benched shows).

It was funny, but it was also scary dangerous, because little daschhunds can so easily seriously injure their backs and even risk paralysis if they fall or jump or are tossed, as these were, in some unexpected way. Fortunately none of the dogs were hurt, but the next day in this cluster of three days of shows the same dogs were housed as a group in a great big family sized wire crate the owner could scarcely lift!

Hi

I started a topic on here just before crufts - maybe a week or two before. I was asking the same question and i recieved loads of helpful advice, some people prefered canvas and some prefered metal, in the end i went with my initial decision - canvas - as it was light and i was traveling by train (all the way from Aberdeenshire) Scotland!!

Anyway at crufts my bench was right next to the ring i had padlocks on every zip :- " i never went far as i was worried as this was the first time id taken any form of crate to a show (although i had her sleeping in it a couple of weeks before going). Whilst i was watching the judging Tara comes bursting out of the canvas crate, she had burst the zip! Thankfully she came straight to me - but she wont go anywhere without me anyway.

Anyway ever since then - its metal for me, as i have a certain 11 month old puppy who wouldnt necessarly come straight to me!!! :teehee:

We have a little fold down trolley to pull the cages along, its so handy - its also great to see the dogs through the cage IMO. Can see what there getting up to! o:)

I have both metal and canvas cages depending on which gos I am taking. Bandit hates the canvass cage and barks and growls at any dog that he thinks is to close he doesn't both when he is in his metal cage. The others are happy in the canvass cages although Tegan can not only open the zips on the canvass cage she can also escape from the metal cages so if she is going (she doesn't do many shows) I have to take a collection of small padlocks to make sure she is safe.

I do have to be carefull when using a canvass cage for William as he starts getting excited and acts daft and unless he has somthing either side of a canvass cage he has been known to tip it over

Canvas or Metal ?......Depends on the dog  some of ours can be trusted in canvas cages, others definately not!! :- "

Well I went for cage - and thought oh I'll have fun and games bribing her in to it but - it arrived today and she left her usual upside position on the sofa and moved right in!

I have a lightweight metal one - my nice fawnie boys are fine in canvas but the stripeys are a little more strong-willed and I always go for metal, with a reflective cage cover that can be turned either way dependin on whether it is hot or cold :D

There aint nothing lightweight about this cage - now I know why I showed tibetan spaniels!!!
