Now we have 2 delightful whippies, I need a bigger car (currently have a Ford KA). I need the girls to be able to sit in the boot area with a dog guard on so no more muddy feet on the seats. Any ideas? I don't really want a proper estate type car as I am used to small cars. What do others use?

We've got a Honda Jazz and we love it and would definitely get one again. It's a small car but feels really spacious when you're in it. Ours has been fitted with a dog guard and there's easily room for 2 whippets to fit comfortably in the boot. Hope you find what you're looking for!

No whippets Citreon Saxo to 4 whippets Transit van

I have a Toyota Yaris Verso (stopped making them last year I think) and the back seats fold down into the floor. I have a cage for one whip and the other 3 dogs fit with their harnesses attached to floor fittings. I would easily be able to fit a double cage and room left over but I also carry my wheelchair or electric buggy along with whips, shopping etc. A real Tardis of a car and cheap to run too. There is a diesel version but mine is an automatic as I have to have one because of my disability.

Don't know what I'll do when it needs replacing!! :(

I went from having no dogs and owning a peugeot 206 convertable (so unpractible for dogs ) to a Toyota Rav 4 and love it :D , i was always used to driving smaller cars but found the switch much easier, it didnt feel much bigger just easier to drive.

this is what we got to go to shows and carry all 6 of our whippets with us

we also have enough room to carry all our camping gear when we go

racing or coursing because we normally camp and sleep in the van in

the field - we put about 50,000 miles/year on it and it has held up well

with those long long night drives -

dwight

Try a Citreon Belingo it is small but still has a lot of room more than enough for what you wwant and if you get the 1900 deisel it is very cheep to run and also it has a really low insurance rating very confy to as well as having a high veiw so seeing the road in front is easy.

Citreon Berlingo diesel for us too.

Plenty of room for the whippets and people (why bother with people though? )

We also have a Peugeot 306 which is set up in the back solely for dogs so NO PEOPLE

Landrover Defender..room for two whippets,a lurcher, a boxer and a beagle and definitely no people...in fact the only space for people is between the treads on the tyres  (w00t)

I had the same consideration when replacing my car recently, I too wanted a small-feeling car, but I also needed passenger seats in addition to dog space so I decided on an estate. There are a couple of small estates, VW Golf and the Volvo V40. We went for the latter, it doesn't feel any different to driving a normal VW Golf hatchback for size and is much easer to park than the bigger Volvos, so I wouldn't discount them. (The Volvo's passenger seats fold completely flat too which isn't the case with all cars  ) The volvo V40 is very good for short people too, as the seat position and angle is highly adjustable.

The only thing I'm disappointed with is the room between the wheel arches is only 35" so I'll have to have a custom dog cage made as the standards ones are all 36", but I was planning to do that anyway. I think the Golf equivalent is wider at that point, but they are harder to find. They are both car's with very high safety ratings (which was a major consideration for me, having written off my last car in a nasty accident. )

We used to have a Renault Clio .It was great for just 2 whippets. Then my son Ben grew that much over the summer he is now taller than me and still growing :- " and sits in the back with his head on the roof. We changed this for a Renault Laguna estate .It is older but still a great car penty of room for William(greyhound )in the back.We went to Tanya's k9 weekend in Great Yarmouth in it and it was fab. I have a Chrysler Voyager great for the dogs I can get them all in(6) just a bit big

Hey, thanks for all the speedy replies so far  ! I shall have to get researching all the cars suggested, although I think a dedicated truck (like Wildhare Whippets, although this would be lovely) is out of my price range at the moment  !

berlingo here to

not over long, so easy to park

higher seating position and very good view allround,

economical to run and not extortionate to buy,

nice and square in the boot for cages,

and the best bit...back seats really really easy to shift to fit in even more whippets :D

ive got a citroen c8 which is maybe too big for what your looking for,but for room once the seats are out is fine for 6 plus whippets.

I test drove a Renault Kangoo the other day. It was brilliant. They look like Postman Pat cars (sorry to Kangoo owners) (w00t) , but they are so practical. Loads of space in the boot. When the hatchback door opens at the back it's like standing under a tent awning...it's so long. I love the sliding rear doors, and all round visitbility was good, as you sit higher up, and the mirrors are the size of van mirrors. It's definitely a Kangoo or a Berlingo (similar type car) for me soon. No more loading the dogs onto the back seat and trying to do up harnesses and getting seats mucky. :sweating:

Excellent photo by the way....what a talent

Range Rover for us - probably a bit bigger than you wanted but the whippets love the room in the back. Had a Golf before that though and there was plenty of room for 2 dogs in the back of that

skoda octavia vrs here, massive useful boot and a great car in every other way also.

Rav 4 5 door

Barjo dog guards in the boot - enough room for 3 whippets and can always remove back seats and have another cage their if necessary :D

Had the 3dr before, I loved it as well but not enough room!

fiat multipla, you can take the seats out ,which is so easy & quick, we then fit Tia's bed in between the kids seats & she loves it loads of room & a great car

I went from a Ford KA to a Ford Focus! It's brilliant and loads of room for 2 greyhounds and 3 whippets, not to mention the occasional whippet x and springer spaniel! :D
