i have just read a couple of replies to samnd pitts, i am a non-ped racer and agree with mark, the sand does not bother nail beds or eyes , we wash sand away after race and have had no bother with injuries from sand pitt finishes, much safer in hot dry conditions
Thanks Debbie for trying to bring it back on track!

i have only been a spectatour realy at ped and non ped racing and the finishes allways make me cringe but they dont seam as bad on sand even when the big no limt dogs finsh its not as bad as on grass but thats just from an on lookers point of view cos iv not got my pup yet

You are so right here Debbie ........after working for years with racing Greyhounds, I must admit that I have never seen very many injuries (if any) at the end of a Greyhound race ,.......were as i've seen a few accidents at the end of a Whippet race due to the way they "pile in"

Round one goes to strike whippets.

remember protect yourself at all times and come out fighting,

Ding Ding round 2 :sweating:

Our problem Debbie is that we don't have many tracks which we can dig up and put a sand pit in.

Most of our tracks are on playing fields. :b

Brill photo though. Who took it?

Sorry I've had to edit my comments to say bloody brill photo. Also that I love the photo of Master Blaster in the whippet news.

same here not all our tracks are sand pitt, as most of the time our tracks are also on playing fields or council run grounds

we also run our bend racing from september to march with the odd few straight events inbetween them for the dogs which don,t run the bends

I think that the way that you run bends is a very good idea.

We only have 5 open level bend races per year now. If I haven't got that correct then someone will shout at me. We have 2 champs at Morton, 1 bend at Worcester, 1 at Stanborough and 1 at Maidstone.

So is that enough to make it sensible from the dogs point of view to continue running bends. ie the bends are all mixed up amongst the straights, they are run during the summer months, and is it fair to the dogs to run them on so few bends?

A lot of very experienced racing people that I know think that bends should be done away with. Yet others equally experienced believe that bends should continue. Some even say that it's what racing is all about. Me I haven't a clue and I don't have enough experience of running my dogs on them to hazard an opinion.

I think that some of the posts recently have been a little bit extreme! :b

Personally I think that we should try and accentuate the positive, rather than take pops at each other!

Sure there is a song there!

(w00t) .....LOL There probably is a song in there Scott :D , but I won't back down and stop taking pops as you call it as I'm in the right (as always (w00t) ) ......LOL

beejay, the photo was took by the local newspaper, it is of my own two dogs, fawn one is nbch/nch oscars pride and the other is supreme racing champion master tornado, oscar won the race by 1/2 a dog

Where has all this come from............It's news to me that I'm such an evil so and so... obviously you know better......I can guess where the rumour started, there is only one person who has moved from the Northern to S.C......I wish him well and hope that he makes many new friends on the open circuit.
Well John,

You got this 1 about as wronge as you could of got it, not sure how you work out it had to of come from me but i'm sure theres logic in there someware, if you want to know where people are getting their opinions of you from Read your post over, if I hate you so much why then when you rang when piper was having he last litter did I rush over to be their incase shje needed help? (John wake up and realise who your true freinds realy are.)

For instance a rumour started about the Northerns traps being dangerous! the finger once again was pointed at me but in fact it was your own post about barney breaking a bone in his face on a Northern trap that didnt open correctly that started the rumour.

Then there was the rumour about the ground being bad! The pictures that were posted on K9 of the Northerns car park during trophy pictures is what started the rumours about bad ground ect. (you'd be better looking at the Northern members for who starts rumours around the Opens)

O and where were club officials last weekend when the Northerns shed needed moving! who was it that had to move their lure coursing meetings venue at 9.30pm at night so they could supervise the moving of the Northen shed because Rugby had tried ringing all the main officials but got no response? so they ended upring someone they knew(in their word) "they could rely on", o that'll be me wont it the bloke that according to rumours is supposed to hate the Northern so much, the bloke who rumours have it wants to see the Northern close?, not that I ever ecpected any thanks for it (sorry Scott yes you did have the curtisy to contact me when you found out about the shed being moved and thank me, which was apreciated)

But dont worry due to all the e/mails and calls i've been getting off members asking us to come back, I will be paying my membership to the Northern so the clubs not realy lost me, like the great man once said "i'll be back".

as for making freinds around the Opens? I don't need to after 14 years racing i've already got those genuine! freindships but thanks for the good wish's they mean a lot to me. :b .

Gather 'round me, everybody

Gather 'round me while I'm preachin'

Feel a sermon comin' on me

The topic will be sin and that's what I'm ag'in'

If you wanna hear my story

The settle back and just sit tight

While I start reviewin'

The attitude of doin' right

You've got to accentuate the positive

Eliminate the negative

And latch on to the affirmative

Don't mess with Mister In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum

Bring gloom down to the minimum

Have faith or pandemonium's

Liable to walk upon the scene

To illustrate my last remark

Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark

What did they do just when everything looked so dark?

(Man, they said "We'd better accentuate the positive")

("Eliminate the negative")

("And latch on to the affirmative")

Don't mess with Mister In-Between (No!)

Don't mess with Mister In-Between

(Ya got to spread joy up to the maximum)

(Bring gloom down to the minimum)

(Have faith or pandemonium's)

(Liable to walk upon the scene)

You got to ac (yes, yes) -cent-tchu-ate the positive

Eliminate (yes, yes) the negative

And latch (yes, yes) on to the affirmative

Don't mess with Mister In-Between

No, don't mess with Mister In-Between

Scott, I wouldn't run mine on glass... a bed of nails maybe,,,but not glass!! :p

BJ, thank you for your tolerant reply. I also have the welfare of my dogs at heart as well and I appear to be outnumbered as to what constitutes as an 'acceptable risk'. The danger in my view of zealously reducing risks for whippets is to increase the number of whippets bred that are unsuitable for the purpose of racing.

Strike, empty vessels make the most noise! -_-

If I have jumped to the wrong conclusion, I apologies, Mark.... Contrary to popular belief, I don't hold any office at the Northern......That is the first I have heard about moving the shed...Dennis, the chairman is on holiday....Thanks for your help.

You left the Northern of your own accord....many people, including me, you may remember, were disapointed when you didn't renew your membership.

As far as I know, you have been made welcome, when you have visited.

No problem John appologie accepted.

I left the Northern after tales of backstabbing got back to me by some who were supposed to be freinds, I still hear stories being told (for instance stories that was descussed this last Sunday at the Northern) not from yourself I must ad, but I intend to descuss it with those concerned when I see them as does Paula.

No as far as I am aware you have never said anything negative about either myself or Paula I beleave you are man enough that anything you have to say is in the open not behind our backs like some choose to do.

See you Sunday.

Debbie rather than get involved with this slanging match and to try and get back to where June J started out - could you let me know when the BWRA etc resorted to running all bend racing on sand track, and do you get many toe injuries running greyhound tracks. I also have quite a lot of experience with greyhounds having held a licence to train and as I am probably older than most of you can rember when greyhound track were grass surfaces. It was decided in the 60's due to an out cry from greyhound owners over the number of knocked up and broken toes which were occuring to resort to sand. Hence the well known open dog Sandman and toe injuries in greyhound have since dropped dramitcally as they can occurs when dogs are running bends on hard surfaces or when stopping with not a long enough run off.

I did not run my dog at the Champs as after many year and many injuries I have learned the hard way that June is not the best time to run bends. Its a tough decision to make but having ruined one of the best dogs we ever owned running around Old Hall I wish I had made it years ago.
