I got little Archie at 8 weeks old...and he had his chicken wing tips from day one....wasnt long before he could chomp through a wing...but I always supervise him to make sure he dosnt bolt them down.

oliver struggled with a whole wing when he was 8 weeks so was advised to bash the biggest bone so as to break it up,i did and he never looked back, they go down a treat now :p

Jinny's had them since being about 10 weeks old

- she wouldn't eat anything elsel LOL

I do watch though, because she insists on eating them in front of the GSDs!!! (w00t) Competition is a wonderful thing!!!!!

I took Kaya to the vets this morning for her first jab and Sada came along for

the ride.........(poor girl got a worm tablet placed very far down the back of

her throat for her troubles, lol)

Anyway while talking i brought up the subject of chicken wings and the vet

was not best pleased..........i came away feeling like a very bad whippy mum :(

Maybe wings are a veterinary 'politically incorrect' thing in puppies?????

What would wild puppies eat ... other than regurgitated food from their mum?

The 2 litter of puppies I have bred were ALL eating whole chicken wings by 6 weeks old, as have any pups I have brought in ......I must say though that I do pick small wings as the bones are softer as the chickens are younger :)

Vets are mostly against any kind of raw feeding. :(

Personally I'd pay no heed to them. The amount of canine nutritional info they learn whilst training is very little and usually taught by an "expert" from one of the major dog food companies. :- "

If you are worried, give them a few bashes to break up the bones; otherwise feed as they are, imho.

Ann, if you are even remotely worried about giving your pup chicken wings as it seems you are, then dont give em, they dont need em, your concerned fair enough, so how would you feel if you gave one and kaya came to grief, theres your ANNSA

That's very clever, never thought of my name like that

Honey has the tips of the chicken wings raw and then i cook the rest up for her and take the meat off them and give her the meat with her puppy biscuit.

She loves them Ann.

I dont really think vets are against it......just more interested in promoting the food companies that sponsor them or the products they sell in their premises.

My vet knows mine are on the BARF diet ....but seem to love promoting puppy food for puppies...and not to feed human food... :- "

Id never really had anything to do with BARF till joining K9 and I must say the dogs seem happier on it and wish Id kown a bit more when I owned my previous whippets.

I do think a balanced diet is the key to keeping them healthy, but raw natural bones are brilliant for their teeth and wellbeing.

I remember adopting Willow from my vets. When I came to collect her I asked what food I should get for her, expecting them to recomend Royal Canin or Iams as they stocked those. They said "Get some tins of pedigree, it's as good as any of the rest out there, and cheaper."

I think for vets it might be not having a huge amount of knowledge on canine nutrition. For them recommending the higher end kibbles is a safer bet than recommending a raw diet and perhaps owners not researching into it properly and making mistakes that would fall back at the vets feet, them being the ones that recommended it in the first place.

Certainly, as you say, there is alot of them out there that are motivated by money though!
