i know that chocolate is bad for dogs but how bad?

just cought zoe feeding the pups areo bubbles, she had a full packet, but there are only 3 left she doesnt know how many she gave them :(

any help! what should i do???

If it was a small packet and there are still 3 left then you will probably be OK

But if it was a large bag (w00t) then take them to the vet and they will get them to vomit it up

You're right ........ chocolate contains theobromine which is poisonous to dogs although every dog is different and what is a disaster for one may be tolerable for another.

If you have any concern at all, then call the vet and get them down there

Good luck :luck: :luck: :huggles:

just an averege side packet i guess, she says she gave them 2 so ither 2 each or one each so i guess thats a small amount

Hope your little ones are ok :( . I had a worry with chocolate a while back when the mum in law left some lying around. I phoned the vet and they said for a dog a size of an (adult) whippet then they would have to eat around an easter egg sized amount of MILK choc for it to cause problems. Dark choc more serious though so wouldn't take any chances if they ever got some of that.

thankfully its areo bubbles with 25% cocoa solids, have been reading the links very helpfull, im quite sure that they havent eaten anywhere near enough to cause any problems :sweating: i suppose at leats its a good excuse to give up chocolate lol

I think it will probably be that strong belgian chocolate that is the worst. I know my dotty old aunt used to share a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk with her dog every day and it lived to a ripe old age.

Try not to worry Katie. :)

It depends on the chocolate... I've had a cocker spaniel into the clinic that needed to be ventilated for 48 hours after eating a small bar of Swiss chocolate - but that had a very high cocoa solid content and the dog was clearly very susceptible. Aero's not got that high a content - but still is far from ideal

Keep a very, very close eye and if you're worried, get to a competent small animal vet.

good luck

I think it depends on the dog, although I would advise against letting them eat chocolate.

I had a bitch who lived until she was 16 who regularly had chocolate.

Just keep your eye on them, maybe try some salt water to make them sick.

Dark chocolate is worse. My sister's dog eat nearly a whole 250 gram bar once luckily he was sick an hour after so was fine.

One of my Tibetan Spaniel bitches ate a whole terry's chocolate orange once, she only weighed about 12 lbs, but didn't have any side effects...just a little thirsty!

My friends Whippet Dobe cross ate a bar of dark expensive high cocoa solids choc and was very very thirsty and shock for a while.

Neither had any ill effects and both lived well into their teens

oh i would never ever give them chocolate but we had just come home from nursery and they had picked a sweet from the shops, and i had told them to leave the pups in the crate as i wanted to get the stuff away first, so zoe thought they were hungery and thats why she says she was feeding them the chocolate, she has now had a long talk about how chocolate is very bad for doggys and will make them sick and they will have to go to the doggy doctor :( i think she gets the message, :sweating:

its been a few hours now and they both seem fine, they have just finished tareing round the house and are having a snooze before we go walkies, but i shall still keep a watch of them.

thanks for all the help guys :huggles:

Have you ever tried dog chocolates? :">

They taste horrid!!

Me and my mum got silly one night and ate those choc drops for dogs....

not a whole bag, they were yukky!!

But the dog absolutely loves them, she would do anything for some.

I like giving them to her when i have chocolate so she doesnt feel left out!

Don't worry they will be fine.

Our old boy Tizer who lived to 17 once ate the best part of a kg bar of Dairy Milk, with next to no side effects

If you do not know how much cocoa butter it has, good basic rule is; more expensive chocolates (Swiss, Belgian etc) and the darkest are the most dangerous. Cheaper and lighter less damage it will do.

I hate the idea of dogie chocolate as it gives people the idea that chocolate is OK for dogs. Of-course, dog chocolate is not actually a chocolate at all.

When I was a child we had a great dog, Meg, a lab cross retriever. she used to love smarties, balanced them on her nose and throw them up and catch them. My Dad obviously didnt know that chocolate might be harmful to dogs. Meg never suffered any ill effects, she also had a small chocolate bar from my Grandma when she came to see us every other Sunday and lived to be 14.

Hoping that Star and Ruby will be fine, its very likely they will be.

Really hope the pups remain fine.

Also watch cocoa power when cooking, dogs can lick up most of a packet if they get half a chance.

And Chocolate Icing is very bad also.
