Hi All

I am looking for the best grain free high meat content 7 month old puppy food for a clients puppy. The lady is feeding Baxter’s which is awful for a growing pup, she has asked for advice. I feed my dogs on Trovet but I have seen royal canine - suggestions please. Price not a problem.

Royal Canin isn't great.

Have a look at www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

It is an independent dog food comparison website which scores all types of foods (dry, raw, wet) on a scale of 0 to 5. You can set filters for your dog's weight, age etc and choose to avoid ingredients like grain and then view only the foods scoring, say, 4 and above. Then you can show them listed according to daily feeding cost so you can see what gives you best value for money.

Royal Canin is grain based and not a very good product!
Having owned Cocker spaniels since I was 17, and fed raw products for probably 40 years. I would suggest as already mentioned a raw diet.
I have 2, 6 month old's at the moment and they are getting 1/2lb raw meat each and a piece of chicken carcass or 2 chicken wing's each per day. They have cut themselves down to 2 meals per day.
An adult cocker that is not working does well on 1/2lb raw product per day.

Our cocker pup arrived having been fed on Royal Canine- his tummy took ages to sort out so I think RC is pants to be honest. He now gets some raw (fish or mince beef) and I feed Vets Kitchen pork and potato for brekkie so he can be left with a dog sitter and take a meal with him if needed. It's the only diet that suits him. But every dog is different so the only thing I'd say is if you make changes give it time to see if it works- oh and try probiotics as well to get things stable in there! Oh and if you're doing home cooked add the carbs as sweet or ordinary potato rather than rice.

There's a lot of vegetarians (I'm one) and vegans who feed raw because of the benefits (and because it's easier to ensure that the welfare of the animals used in the food is reasonable). Sometimes you can get past the ick factor very quickly, like when you learn to change your first baby's nappies. (My mum threw the first two nappies on the fire in disgust... this was before the days of disposables!)

But I do appreciate that it's harder for some people than others, and you may already have tried (e.g. if you've had to prepare food for non-veggies). And the foods you've gone for look really good.

Presumably you have to feed your client's dog - what would you do if a client fed raw and wanted you to give the same food?

Another veggie here who occasionally raw feeds. I don't enjoy it but I do it.

As far as I'm concerned buying meat that doesn't look anything like meat is a bit of a fudge and if you are concerned about animal welfare ( which is my motivation) the meat and meat derivatives that go into kibble and processed wet food are likely to be from intensively reared animals and imported from countries that have even lower standards of animal welfare than we do.

I know that the meat I feed my dog is as ethically produced as I can get.

I have tried and cannot do it so I don’t take in dogs on raw diet

I have been waiting for this doggie daycare since 11 am this morning and she keeps saying she is coming.

I will cancel soon as I put off another client because she was desperate and I felt sorry for her but this is a joke.

What do you think I should do?

Yep she is feeding bakers rubbish so I said try her on this and she said ok so I bought some am this morning and will give a tiny bit over 7/10 days to change her over so I bought some food for puppy to help lady out.

Is this the same dog you have recommended a different diet for, and bought food for?

If so, maybe the owner is uncomfortable with your recommendation?

If you've paid for the food (assuming she agreed to this and that she would pay for it) and she was booked for daycare, then she should pay both for the food and the daycare. Presumably you have a clause in your T&Cs for cancellation and failure to give sufficient notice?

Another veggie here too- amazing what we do for our dogs. As for your client at least get her off Bakers- we call it Bonkers in rescue. A young cocker plus Bakers- can be a horror story.

Hmm...my neighbour's pointer was so-o difficult to recall he had to go on walk with a bag of raw liver strips- only thing the little devil would come back for- but imagine putting you hand in that!

In my recipe for liver cake you can substitute canned tuna - would that help? I can post the recipe if you want it.

I would recommend a raw diet. You could have something like this delivered every now and then - Pure Chicken.
This thread is confusing and in your T&C's you should have a policy about cancelations and not turning up
