i have a black Whippet bitch. Her sire was a blue dog. If I were to mate my bitch with a blue dog, what percentage of the pups would be black and what percentage would be blue?

If two solid blue whippets were mated, would all the pups be blue?

there isnt a guarantee but it is more likely, i have had brindle dogs come form a solid black and a black and white mum explain that lol

depends on the recessive genes as well as what you can see. white isnt a colour, its an absence of pigment, so as ive been made to understand it, is down to a different set of genes, so in theory if you were to mate 2 solid blues, if they have this recessive gene, you could end up with 25% of the litter being blue and white. my eldest girls dam is a brindle, she came out of a black dam and a blue sire, so she wasnt expected either :lol: in turn with my purdey, dam black brindle with white trim, sire black brindle, out came a white pied. it caused us so much grief with the stud dog owners, as he'd never thrown a white pied before even when mated to bitches of that colour, let alone when mated to other coloured bitches. which just shows that just because you are likely to get x percentage of a certain colour, isnt a guarantee you will, and paying attention to a pedigree can be helpful. if it werent for the fact that i had access to the backround of my dogs, and that one owner actually took the time to go through the studs ancestors, purdey and her brothers wouldnt have been registered

You don't get isabellas in whippets.

I mated self fawn, all fawn bred to blue. Got two fawns, four solid blues and a blue and white parti.

Blue to fawn brindle. One blue with heavy white trim, one pale fawn brindle, four solid blues.

Blue to black. Litter one, two blacks and one blue. Litter two, one black, one blue, one black with white trim and a fawn

Black with white trim to fawn with white trim. One fawn with white trim, one fawn and white parti colour, one black, one red with black mask and a sable.

Blue to fawn with blue behind him. Three solid blues, two fawn and white partis and one blue and white parti.

So I think it is a lottery, a guessing game.

Forgot, blue with heavy white trim to black masked fawn. One blue, one fawn, two tiger brindles, very bright coloured too.

I didn't breed them all!!!!!

As they are non-peds other breeds may be lurking behind them, hence some of the odd colours they can be.

If you look at a large number, lets say thousand, of pups from blue (not carrying brindle or fawn) to black (carrying blue, but not brindle or fawn) mating you will find that about half will be black and half blue. However if both parents carry fawn or brindle, you may also get some of these colours.

As others already said, the proportions are pure lottery, and percentages only work if you are looking at large number of pups. Just like over all roughly half of all pups born are male and half female; but in each litter you may get anything from all boys to all girls, and anything in between. Each egg has the X chromosome, and some sperm have the X and some Y, if sperm with X gets the egg it will be a girl, if Y it will be a boy. In the same way some eggs will have one of the genes of each colour pair the bitch has, and the sperm has one of those the sire has, and the combination of several different genes will determine the colour of the pup.
