Yes he has never been off the lead yet. With the puppy classes, she said not to let the pups off the lead until we know they have excellent recall. Which will take time with loose lead walking and positive reinforcement so he keeps watching us, etc. We have a very long lead to use to out on his harness. Puppy class is tomorrow and we are doing that apparently.
She did say in an email to me that she has known many spaniel pups to be returned to their breeders because it is too much.
I really do think it depends on the puppy though.
She suggested a book called Mission Control by Jane Ardern. And the author talks about training a cocker spaniel with many field trial champions in his background and all she had to do. Barley has many too in his background.
 
There are secure dog walking fields you can hire by the hour to practise off-lead and recall.
