1972 was the year I took my Borzoi dog to Crufts. It was also the first time my husband Peter, then my fiance, visited Crufts. My dog had done quite well winning a first at Blacpool under Robin Searle and a couple of firsts at Manchester under Joe Braddon. He was a nice dog but carried his tail quite high. As I was waiting to enter the ring Peter had been avidly reading the breed description in the catalogue and declared what a shame, it says here Guy carries his tail all wrong. I knew it, probably everone watching knew it, but just at that moment it would have been better unannounced.

We didn't win anything but I always said that come the day when I win BIS at Crufts the last person allowed to be interviewed by Phillipa Forrester will be Peter.

I was also wondering what year did Crufts qualification start?

Husbands - just gotta love them! Sometimes they're worse than kids LOL

Thanks for the morning smile.

I never went when it was at Olympia , ,Earls Court was bad enough  Catching a coach at 4am (w00t) stopping at least twice on the way down , getting into London , Earls Court at 8.00am when judging probably didnt start till 10.00. The venue was far too small , it was boiling upstairs . but the worst of it was the journey home (w00t) .

As now, none could leave till a certain time , but if you were on a coach it was worse , cos the drivers couldnt leave till after 5 pm ( well thats what we were told ) and so you get literally hundreds of coaches all queueing up. and if all the people werent ready to get on their coach as it slowly came round the police /carpark peps , just sent it to the back of the queue . It was chaos believe me , the fumes from dozens of old coaches slowly moving along was enough to give any one chest problems and the poor dogs were at ground level too

And of course you always had some one who would be last back on the coach and hold everyone up wouldnt you  . One year i organised the coach for hound /terrier day and some of the peps going didnt have dogs , fair enough , but there were a couple of ladies who I didnt know and when we stopped on the way down for a 20 mins break they decided to have a full breakfast , I couldnt remember what they looked like so we had to wait neally an hour for them ! I really gave them what for when they got back on the bus , telling them this was a coach for exhibitors too ,who had dogs to prepare ( we had 3 Afghans on board )

Anyhow we got into London late ,and caught all the morning traffic , when it was time to get off i informed everyone that they should meet in ring whatever at a set time and I would go out and wait for the bus to come round , if any one was missing then we would be going without them . After my `performance ` at the 2 ladies who kept us waiting in the morning , surprisingly no one was late ;)

We eventually got back to Nottingham just around midnight (w00t)

Thanks goodness its now at the NEC , just 1 hour away . I never got to see London anyway , mind you its not a city I like :teehee:

Had to laugh at that one Jackie. It reminds me of one time when I came down to Earls Court from Scotland by coach. I think it was the last Crufts in London. Anyway, I left home around 10pm to catch the coach at midnight. For some reason Mum couldn't go and I was showing her beautiful Biggles  (R. Thief of Time). Biggles ALWAYS refused to 'go' indoors, and you couldn't get outside at all at Earls Court. Anyway, we got through the show. Biggles and I had a wondeful day winning 2 classes. (If being at Crufts is exciting, being in the challenge is even more so!)

At last it was time to go home. We had 2 coaches in convoy, but with the small size of the car park there, the police were sending all the coaches round and round the block and only letting in 3 coaches at a time. One of ours got in reasonably soon, but, naturally it wasn't the one I was on. The driver promised to wait at the first service station on the M1, and drove off. 50 minutes later the second coach managed to get in and pick us up. He had being going round and round the block for nearly 2 hours by then, which hadn't done the bus much good.

It was now about 7pm, and Biggles hadn't lifted his leg since about 5am! We had just got onto the M1 when the coach broke down. Biggles decided that now was the moment! Despite the driver shouting that I couldn't get out on the motorway, Biggles and I ran out. I stood in the freezing cold for what felt like half an hour waiting for Sir to finish - much to the amusement of my fellow passengers.

We limped to the services, to find that the other driver was about to call the police (no mobile phones in those days).

Ater waiting ages for a mechanic, etc etc, we got back home just in time to go to work the next morning!

Whenever I feel like moaning about the NEC, its car park etc, I think of that journey and decide that it isn't so bad after all!!

I've exhibited at Crufts when it has been at Olympia, Earls Court and Birmingham!! How old does that make me!!! Olympia was brilliant because when you were scheduled on the final day you could watch BIS from the balcony and the spaniels were always benched upstairs so we were already up there!!!

Those were the days!!! Now I hardly stray away from the bench/ring cos I can't be doing with all the damned crowds!!

(w00t) Yep I did the coach trip too. If there had been H&S inspectors around they would have condemned the coach area as a major health hazard, if you didn't suffer from Asthma, you could have ended up putting up a good display of similar symptoms.

As for not leaving till 5pm it was a ploy on the coach drivers part to get in a few hours overtime payments because at that stage tacographs hadn't been installed in coaches. Worked though because you were guaranteed to hit all the rush hour traffic heading out of London.

And, yes, Dawn I am THAT old, but who cares. I can now get away with having "senior moments" and I appear to be having them quite regularly lately.

As for being owned by Danes, being owned by a Belgian (I don't think) is more than enough. That's what comes of replying at some unearthly hour of the night.
