Hey guys,

Smokey cut his pad on monday, its a front paw, one of the toe pads just below the claw, about 1cm long.

anyway we cleaned it, lavander oil on it and bandaged it up, but smokey being smokey rips the bandage off in 2mins, so have just been keeping it clean and limited him to lead walks,

it doesnt look infected and there is definatly nothing stuck in it, but as the week has went on hes limping more and more, any ideas on what to do?

thanks

In my experience with pads Katie, they do take a few weeks to heal...and can be quite sore for the dog to walk on.

I would just carry on keeping it as clean as you can...have you tried Vet wrap...its great for paw /leg injuries...I keep in on hand

in the house at all time...you can buy it on the internet in different colours.

Unless you can see any infection, then you would need antibiotics from a vet

yes we have vetwrap, and he just keeps tugging/pulling till it comes off.

i assumed the vet would just do the same as us unless its infected so was avoiding them

hes funny, say wheres your sore paw and he looks at it and lifts it for you :teehee:

Milking it then....

Cait did exactly the same thing on Monday and she is limping more today than she was when she first did it.

I'm keeping an eye on it, but it seems clear of infection at the moment. I'd leave the bandage off, Katie. Nature has a way of healing and Smokey needs to lick it to assist the healing process

Yes agree with Jane on leaving the bandage off so he can lick......just thought the vetwrap may help when hes out...but he if chews it off then no point.

we had a pad problem a couple of months ago when my boy started to limp slightly and i spotted a very small cut on his pad so assumed there could not be anything in it....... his limp got worse over a couple of days until it was really quite bad so we took him to the vets and the vet said he thought there was actually something in his pad even though the cut was very small and we could not see anything. they took him in for the day :( and had to knock him out to have a good look and they said that something flew out of his pad when they squeezed it but were not sure what it was and could not find it on the floor or anywhere. there was quite a hole in his pad where they had cut into it and it did take about a month to heal properly so i just tried to keep it clean bathing with salt and water after walking but did not put anything on as he just chewed it off. he just licked it himself as the others have said.

hope smokey's paw is ok.
