I’m a qualified veterinary nurse and dog groomer and I run a salon in Holmes Chapel in Cheshire.Ive recently qualified to be able to practice reiki and I’ve already seen the benefits of it in some of my canine visitors.

I have a question for you as a dog groomer! I hope you don't mind. My 5 mth old puppy does not like to be groomed at all. We have taken her to the groomers twice, for the last 2 Fridays, and all the groomer has been able to do is brush her!! He is great and is taking it really slowly to try and make it a positive experience for her but as soon as he takes out scissors or the shaving thing, she goes mad barking and wriggling. Is there anything I can do at home to help her become more accustomed to the experience? I am trying to condition her to the scissors by taking them out and praising and rewarding her when she let me touch her with them, but the minute I try to do anything, she reacts. Have you got any good tips?? Thanks!

I always advise my customers with puppies to get them accustomed to things they’re going to come into contact with in the salon as early as possible. So have them present when drying your hair and gradually introduce that to them. Handle as much as possible, particularly legs and feet. Run the back of spoon over the body and if you have an electric toothbrush you can run that close to them, moving closer until they’re confident. Always praise and reward positive behaviour using your voice, treats, toy and build up sessions gradually.Hope that helps? Let me know how you get on x
