Hi,

I am new on here and was looking for some advice. We currently have a 14 month old male whippet and im looking to get another whippet pup, but i am unsure whether to get a bitch or dog. My dog is generally placid but loves to run with other dogs! I have no plans to breed the dogs so this is not a factor, compatibility is the only real issue to me. I want to make sure they get along with each other. Any advice will help me weigh up the pros and cons of either, and will be appreciated.

Another dog would keep your life simple, loads of people on here have 2+ boys together, they are such a great sociable breed. :thumbsup:

Hello, Welcome to k9 Just speaking from my own experience here. I had a dog first then got a bitch when my dog was about 18 months old it was one of the best things i have ever done i found that my dog calmed down a lot and i didn't feel so guilty leaving him when i had to go out because he now had company and also if your going to get another hound i would highly recommend a bitch as i feel they are in general so much easy than dogs. I now have 1 dog 2 bitches and also bred a litter out of the first 2 which produced 12 beautiful pups :wub: . Good luck to you i hope i have helped a bit in making up your mind. Clare )

For me I would definitely get another dog. Why add the complication of a bitch to the equation - seasons; finding somewhere for one of them to stay a couple of times a year etc.

My boys adore each other, we've never had one cross word. Logan was 20 months when Diego joined us (he is Logan's nephew)

We have a pack of 5 dogs and 2 bitches between 3 households (Me, sister and Mum) and we can happily mix and match dogs if needs be as ours are all happy adaptable dogs, but if you have nowhere for a bitch to go when she is in season it can become very difficult and distressing for both the dog and you.

We have litter mate boys Stirling n Kai,who r whippets.Then we got Scarlett ,Hungarian Viszla,then we got Alfie another boy,a long haired chihuahua and we already had Leo our 15 year old Bichon Frise.So at last count we had 5 ! 4 boys 1 girls and they love each other. I think its down to each individual dog.See what you see and perhaps let your dog actually meet the pup.

We've got two boys, brothers from the same litter, and they are great together. They DO scrap (sounds bad but no blood drawn yet..)but I think you'll get that anyway, it's a whippet thing. I didn't want the hassle of seasons so didn't consider a bitch when getting mine, although from memory, when I had a bitch years ago (lab x weimaraner) I don't recall it being too much trouble.

If adding to my pack in future I would only consider a dog, but my heart was stolen by the afghan hound dog I grew up with so I've always really favoured them since - it's his fault I knew I would only consider hounds as a breed this time around!

i have 5 boys and two bitches,the boys get on very well together most of the time :thumbsup: as others have said i would get another male so your not having to keep them seperate when a bitch comes into season or having to have a bitch speyed. :thumbsup:

One thing to bear in mind is that a bitch will generally be the boss

when you have one of each and if you want your boy to feel that

he still retains his position in your household then another dog would

be a better companion for him :thumbsup:

I guess a bitch would be the boss, but could get her spayed if you weren't going to breed?

Boys for me every time personally. My two get on great Ozzy is 18 months and Vinnie is 6 months. I have 2 ex racing greyhound girls too (both spayed) who get on ok but I know that if bitches dont get on and they fight - they mean it and never forget, whereas two boys will spat and then forget about it.
