well here you go guys :x (w00t)

Today I have a really interesting topic for you. I found this fascinating!

Some cities and business are going brown. What does that mean? They are using animal feces for energy! Yep, you heard me right. I asked one of our writers to research this topic for us and this is what we found out.

The city of San Francisco is working toward using dog feces to produce an alternative power source!

It is estimated that the U.S. produces 10 million tons of pet waste annually, with about 6,500 tons of pet waste coming from the very pet-friendly city of San Francisco!

Much of the feces is currently scooped into non-biodegradable plastic bags and dumped into the landfill to sit for years and years. Feces, which are not scooped, can enter and contaminate water supplies. Now instead of harming the earth, doggie doo can actually help Mother Nature with this new technology.

A waste pickup company, Norcal Waste, will soon be picking up park dog waste in biodegradable bags. This waste will then be processed in a methane digester, where feces-eating bacteria produce methane. From there, the methane can be used by anything that runs on natural gas or it can be used to generate electricity. This technology has been used and proven on European farms for about 20 years.

Dog poop is the ideal waste in this energy-producing process because of the protein-rich food, which we feed our pets. The droppings should produce as much energy as food scraps, another useful alternative energy source. Together, 80 tons of dog feces and food scraps could produce enough energy to power thousands of homes!

Don't you just love hearing about alternative and useful energy sources?

Have a great day,

Have a great day,

Tanya an interesting topic indeed to a bloke like me, but why stop at animal feaces

why not Human, the day will come beleive you me, for i strongly beleive, that one of my quality stools could power a scamel

iv seen that on a tv programe before but it was with cow or pig poop on a farm and they used it to heat and fule the whole house. it was built like a celler under the house at you put it in a hole and it went down to this celler where somehow it got turned into gas and then piped back up into the house.

i think i would just be a little conserened about the smell on a hot summers day :x :x

we live about 2miles away from the sewage works and when its realy hot and theres a breese the whole place stinks :x :x so not so sure id like it under my house

OMG :x Dosent ind me as long as its eco friendly. Phoebe does mount everest and could save much energy

I remember working on a private horse yard where the owners were talking of eventually using their muck heap as a form of heating for their house. Makes good sense if the muck heap is already there. Anyone that has worked on farms or with horses will know how much heat comes off that thing! From what I recall though it was expensive to convert over to this source, of course no more fuel bills once it got going!
