Hi,

We have 2 beautiful whippets with the intention of breeding, starting in 2009. Our Bitch is about 6 months old, so is due to have her first season sometime soon. Obviously she is too young to breed now, so we are intending to separate them for the first season. Ideally we are going to wait until the third season, as this is when we can dedicate the most time and attention to the breeding process..

Does have anyone know about Doggy Contraception, I know from books it is available - I understand that this could be seen as controversial, but having an "accident" litter at the moment would be difficult for us! If it is safe, and works, it would be our extra peace of mind that accidents wont happen.

She will eventually have a few litters so we are not considering neutering.

Please if anybody has any info on this, it would be much appreciated, and help us to make a decision on what to do!

Check out whippet knickers in market place, non medical, drug free and once covered up should be safe.

Can I ask why? Only at 6 months old I can't see what this bitch has prooved (or is going to prove) that warrants breeding a few litters in the future?

What's the breeding of her please? :)

Believe me,a pair of whippet knickers will NOT stop a dog & bitch from mating!!!

This comment deeply worries me.....at 6 months old you're already contemplating having a few litters from her? If you don't mind me asking,WHY?

Having an "accident" litter at the moment would be disastrous and definitely not the best thing for your 6 month old bitch, who is still a puppy herself. You need to be able to keep your bitch completely separate from your other dog (who I presume from your post is a dog and not another bitch) AT ALL TIMES DURING YOUR BITCH'S SEASON. A moment's inattention on an owner's part, is enough time for a determined dog and bitch to mate.

Please think long and hard about the decision you intend to make about breeding - I do not wish to be rude at all, but it is of grave concern to many people, myself included, as to the numbers of dogs being bred for whom homes cannot be found. And this is ALL breeds - not just Whippets.

When you do eventually plan a litter, will you have a list of people who are committed to having one of your pups? And will they definitely buy your pup - they aren't just friends and family who think it's "a good idea at the time" but then melt away when they realise the responsibility of rearing a pup properly?

Whippets have just entered the KC "Top Twenty breed registrations" and to my mind this is definitely not a good thing for ANY breed.

You go on to say that "ideally you will wait until the third season" - this is still quite young - if she were to have her first season at 6 months, then each season at 6 month intervals, she would only be 18 months old at her third season - still far too young to breed from.

It also worries me that you say "she will eventually have a few litters". How do you know, at 6 months of age, that she will be outstanding enough to breed from at all?

Please re-examine your motives for breeding from your girl. Please love and enjoy her for herself.

:( I fully agree with Wilfred, did the breeder of your bitch know what you intended her future to be?

You just cannot decide to "breed a few litters" Whippets are not that easy to find homes for, do not think you will make loads of money. If you cannot separate you dog and bitch, why did you not just have a bitch on its own.

There are so many whippet puppies around that need homes. Please think what you are doing for the sake of you own bitch. :(

wilfred, excellent post and i know im not alone in thinking this

Well, thank you folks but I only said the same as any of you would, if you'd have posted it first.

I just want to add 2 things to my original post:

firstly, I am assuming the OP was genuine in what they posted.

secondly, the last thing I would ever want to do, would be to be intentionally rude to someone - I just hoped that maybe what I wrote, would perhaps give food for thought to the OP and make them question their intentions and so on. What I posted came from the heart, because it's a serious matter to me.

And another one!! And I can definitely say that there is not money to be made from breeding....I actually ran at a HUGE loss on my last litter

it sounds to be like you've bought these dogs just to breed off :(

Furthermore, someone's sold them these dogs. I doubt they'll respond to any of our replies now as I think they'll feel quite intimidated but I would of liked a response to the breedline as I think those responsible would want to know what's going on with their breeding in the future.

argos1 i see youre reading this thread and i had a look at the op profile and i see you know them.do you by any chance know the breeding of their dogs?

these lads were looking for another whippet when we were contemplating re-homing phoebe they came over to meet us with there whippy boy and told us they wanted a pal for there dog and that they were not going to breed....so not only is it with sadness that i now read this post but also with complete relief...we went with our gut instinct that they were not suitable and thank goodness we did....please guys let the poor baby grow up before you make plans for her future..and i just hope you didnt tell the person you got the little girl from the same story you told us....
