Hi Doxhope, what method was used, how many dogs ? Terrain ? Conditions weather wise ? How old is the dog pictured ?

Mike

ps.Went out with a fella who had a surpressed 22 rifle, very effective to cull the white tails.

Mike

good bag that m8 well in

Love that piccie of Jake smiling. He is so adorable. :))

And the whippet Bedlington is gorgeous too.

Hi Mike, all the rabbits on them pictures were lamped. We lamp here in Northumberland and over the Scottish borders, terrain a mixture, rough grazing, hill farms, moors, fells, arable, but the better numbers always come from the rougher terrain. Never going to catch these sort of numbers on golf courses :D

These photos were taken a while back, so cant remember the conditions, but beleive you me, I will have it written down somewhere  I have never been a one for conditions, we say we are going out on certain nights and thats that, if we hit on for good conditions, all well and good. The black dog was 6 on that photo, and there are 57 in that pile. If you are ever on my website, look for the dog called Yella, thats her..I bred this bitch, bred her mother and her grandmother, all were excellent lampers. The blue bitch was her daughter, Sophie, the boy was my apprentice at the time, SORRY KEVIN if your reading this

Yes there are quite a few rabbits here, but guess what, they still have to be chased and caught, they dont, as some people think, jump into your bag when you are walking along the field   Over the years I had a lot of boys up here for nights out, and seen a lot of them carrying their dogs back.

Best we have had was 216 in one night, 3 dogs...

A lot of the keepers up here use the lamp and longrifles, but their aim is to knock down as many as possible in the shortest time. They also use this method to cull the blue hares up from where I live, have seen Toyota pick-ups level with blue hares from one nights work...

Are you offering LES
Me you must be joking :x I would be the one running round shouting and waving my arms for them to leave the bunny alone

Hi Boom, welcome to k9.

As your original post asked about an additiononal dog to join to your existing pup and you stated you liked the Bedlington crosses, as far as I know those would work well with what you have. HOWEVER, do consider a Deerhound cross, they have many points in their favour...not that I'm bias in any way :- "

Were you thinking of another pup? As there is something to be said for an age gap...again only my opinion.

Let us know how you go on.

Hi bappit

my puppy is a working collie x grayhound with dearhound :D

and i'm shure he's gonna be a great dog BUT i love beddies too

so i aint shure to get one or not ... i now think i ought to wait till i put 100% training into the first dog as with 2 dogs will be to much ??

anyways any help or opinions will be noted ty

The good thing about Bedlington crosses, is that some of them resemble deerhounds, albeit in minature form, but one thing they cant match there larger cousins for, is temprement. I too am a LOVER of deerhounds, "not that Im bias in any way"

No Doxhope, surely not :- " ...

...perchance is there a leaning  :teehee: :teehee: (endearing as its, why do Deerhounds do that?) toward the leggier ones? Well, I'd have never thought it of you. :b

Boom, see how you go, from my own experience - my first of the type was "retired" from hunting (we wont go into all the ways and whereforalls at the moment), I then bought another d/h x pup a few months later as he was so self contained I foolishly thought he need a companion...NO! The wise one needed an apprentice...and I got a carbon copy of what i already had!!! Only faster, more eager and I really never had any input...Sometimes you want to do your own training, with a sound older'un...it can just happen...beleive it or not...as i thought it a fluke at the time, I then ended up with a pup till the owner sorted out stuff...and my younger one showed her the way too...(the owner was not really that appreciative it must be said, again another story!)...I was perhaps more thinking of you cutting YOUR work by getting a dog that knew the ropes...early days, early days. Have a think about it. though of course (pardon the pun) you'd need to know what you were getting.

Only said some resemble deerhounds, give me the long leggy ones anytime

So long as you know the field (or forest) ... and what your doing, it all just happens does'nt it Dox? :))

Never understood the reAsonings behind choosing one type over another, gotta go where your heart lies i guess. :huggles:

Boom...take your time, consider the merits of anything on offer, and your lovely pup, and what may suit. Most importantly just enjoy the journey and what it brings is the best I can offer. ENJOY

bappit / DOX

i was introduced to the hunting game when i was very little my father was a very big poacher and used to take me out round the local fields with his dog jake a DEERHOUND X :D that dog was 1 of a kind and was everything to me...

at the age of 6 i would nip out with jake and my grandads terrier and work the brambles every day i would get at least 1 rabbit to take home  dont think thats bad goin for a 6 year old lol

i'm very happy with jake the puppy i got now and i'm sure he will turn out to be a real star of a dog and bring me lost happyness i'm looking forword to the journey and what it brings and will let ya know how things go ....

Well done you  ...see, I blame playstations for many things, by a quick reckoning of that stats you gave - at an early age you were better placed in an environment where you understood the forces of nature, rather than the mind numbing distractions of modern society...apologies if you also have a playstation BTW. Nevermind least you know what its all about Boom.
