OH couldn't find any fish pate up the local shops, so had to make do with Brussels pate. It certainly did the job though! I was quite surprised, as I didn't think Monty would be keen on sprouts...

Years ago, Mr F swore he had seen Brussels Sprouts pate.

Poor old Monty... his snotty nose came back after his last course of antibiotics, and the vet thinks he probably has a tooth root abcess. It would require surgery, but chances of him surviving that are minimal, so it's a case of treating ith antibiotics each time it recurs, and using pain meds as necessary. He doesn't seem to be in pain, and is still eating (though not as well as before) and interested in what's going on - the vet reckons that cats tend to withdraw when in pain.

He took it in his head to come downstairs the other day, the first time he's done this in months. I was standing at the bottom - possibly that's what encouraged him - which was just as well as there was no way he'd have managed it. He stumbled on the first step, and had rolled halfway down by the time I managed to run up and catch him. Luckily he seemed unharmed, and after a bit of a wander round downstairs, followed by a curious Jasper for whom this was quite a novelty, he went back upstairs. At least he can manage that bit!

Poo problems continue - I suspect he hasn't got the strength to hold his bum up high enough when he poos so he ends up sitting in it. I had to give him another bath yesterday, along with some floor mopping and carpet scrubbing.

Awww I’ve been wondering how he’s doing thanks for the update. Glad he’s still feeling okay, and he’s felt bright enough to wander downstairs bless him! X

I said goodbye to Monty this morning He'd been struggling since yesterday to poo, and this morning didn't even want to eat the pate I'd put his antibiotics in. He'd been eating less over the last week or so too. The vet reckoned that rather than straightforward constipation, this was a sign that his digestive system - and pretty much all his systems - was closing down due to his age. You can't medicate without the medication being digested, and without medication the infection would take hold even more and he'd be in considerable pain very soon. So it was the right time.

I stayed with him, and saw the light go out in his eyes. I left him curled up in the cosy little bed that goes in his cat carrier - it was hard enough to leave him behind and he looked so peaceful curled up in it I couldn't possibly remove him from it.

OMG this is spooky - I just went on FB and saw a post by a local friend who has an old incontinent dog - she's asking if anyone has any old towels they don't need as her house is pretty much carpeted in them and she needs more. I have loads of towels & incontinence mats that Monty won't be needing any more...........

It's funny the things that hit you after losing a pet - for years, Monty has lived in the walk-in (if you're only 5' tall!) airing cupboard, and the door has been fixed to be slightly open with a hook so he could always get in and out, and Jasper couldn't. I really struggled to shut that door last night... it just felt so wrong!

It’s so tough Judy,Monty was with you for so long it’s going to take a while before you get used to him not being around, I’m still like that with Molly 5 months on, can’t get used to not getting two food bowls out, having two beds in the lounge how is Jasper coping without him?
