Took Ellie & Holly for their walk today & let them off to play ball on some waste ground at a golf course. Lovely short grass, they went ballistic, haring round chasing each other for 20 minutes or so.

Called them back to put them on their leads to continue their walk thru the woodlands & noticed Ellie was limping then sat down & refused to move.

Thought she may have a prickle in her pad so had a look & was shocked to see blood everywhere & had ripped the top skin clean off both front pads (the big pads in the middle of the front paws)

Carried her back to the car immediately.

Got her home, bathed both front feet in salt water, dried them, applied antiseptic wound powder & bandaged both feet up.

Then drove miles to find a chemist open, bought some new skin & spray on plaster.

Got home took the bandages off, allowed the air to dry for a bit then applied the spray on plaster. This seemed useless so waited an hour or so & applied the new skin.

Boy did she hit the roof, musta stung like mad as went mental, but calmed down after a few minutes.

One is worse than the other.

Went back over the golf course later (minus Ellie of course) to see if i could see anything & found a 6" to 8" metal stick of a golf club that had been broken up with sharp rusty ends either end & am wondering if whilst galloping in circuits both front feet hit either end at the same time, hence skin torn off on both feet in the same place. Needless to say i removed it.

Any advice as to what to do now?

tet jab just in case hun  and lots of tlc :huggles:

if shes ripped a large part of the pad off i would imgine its better to take her to the vets nina as its an awkward place to heal so she might need some antibiotics especially if the metal was dirty and rusty.i think youve done all you can for her, hope shes better soon :luck: :luck: :luck:

aw ! poor Ellie.

how horrible for her , and you, hope she's alright, lots of :huggles: to the poor little girly :huggles: :luck:

Sorry haven't got any advice, just hope all is well soon :huggles: :luck:

Awww poor Ellie, hope she feels better soon Nina :huggles:

Just checked it again & it looks clean & dry.

She is dragging Holly round the patio by her left ear at the moment so gather its not too sore (w00t)

Will call the vet first thing & get an appt to get it checked just incase

Thanks all for your replies

Thanx Jax, both pads still look nice & clean, the new skin seems to have done the trick BUT being a bit of a crock, carried her up to bed where she is now munching happily on a pigs ear (yes i have to sleep with the foul crumbs (w00t) )

Will get her checked in the morning

Hope Ellie makes a full recovery without any complications. All the best :luck:

good luck for today :luck: .

hope ellie is feeling better soon.

Poor Ellie, that sounds really nasty. I hope she is feeling a bit better today and is fully mended soon. :huggles: Sounds like you did a good job looking after her yesterday

Just to let you all know Ellie was most UNIMPRESSED with her trip to the vets today :(

Had an antibiotic jab which she made it quite clear that he was KILLING HER & SCREAMED blue murder.

She then had her feet bathed in a funny bluey anti-bacterial solution which she just hated even more & kicked the whole tray all over his floor.

He then tried to get round her & pacify her with a treat which she spat at him

The cuts aren't deep enough to warrant stitching BUT must be kept clean & dry so if she continues nibbling them she has a nice plastic collar to wear that she is just looking at like "dont even go there" (w00t)

Not exactly the perfect patient

Missed this yesterday. Hope she is feeling better today. I use cut and heal from the Whippet and Greyhound shop, which is really good. :luck:

poor Ellie :( lots of :huggles: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

This is fairly common on hot dry ground. Its just like running blisters for humans.

The girls obviously enjoyed themselves FAR too much running round and round with soft young pads. :D

I dont think it hurts as much as we think it does, and I bet she did hate the new skin that stings like heck!

I think its best to just keep them clean and dry and they will itch so you may need the collar bucket thingy.

Anyway hope she is ok really soon bless

Thanks everyone :huggles:

Maybe it was just the grass that did it then & not the part of the golf club i found

They did go mad & ran non stop like nutters & the speed that they were going  although Holly was fine & she is younger

Never had this before with ANY of my whippies OR lurchers

They actually look much dryer today & she isn't limping so hopefully she is on the mend

Just a general query. How bad does a cut have to be to warrant stitching? Also will it heal with less scaring if stitched? Have heard conflicting ideas on this.

so did he give her a good patient award badge nina? :- "
