theres a prigrm call fat pets on channel 4 on wensday at9pm I can see me spending an hour shouting at the telly aparantly theres an 11 stone rottweller disgusting

Thanks for the reminder I would've forgot, I have a big problem

with fat animals, maybe thats why I like whips!! :D

Wendy, saw a pic of it in the tv book it looks gross, apparently the owner dosent think its overweight and gives everyone a mouthful that say its fat, surely this is as cruel as starving a dog.

theres just be the clip of a 15 st rotte on the local news and its on again at teatime she sats its percetly healthy yet it looked like it had just run a marathon and all it had done was walk down the street

it aint fair on the animal if she loves her dog as much as she makes out she wouldnt be killing it by making so fat she shouldnt be allowed to have animals!!!!!!

yes its disgusting   that people can let them get soooo fat

I saw the owner of the fat Rottie in a magazine this week. She is just ridiculous. If the dog wants to stay up til 5am, she sits up with her and basically allows the dog to do whatever it likes - including eating far too much

I am watching this now, I want to slap the poor Rotties owner. She says she loves her dog & at least she's not being cruel & starving her dog  another one feeds her dog on sausage rolls & cheese butties & at 4 years old is 50% overweight. But at least they have accepted that he needs to lose weight as one leg has already buckled under the weight

Just looking at my skinny lean puppy  can't keep weight on her as she's so active & still growing.

The woman who owns that Rottie should be banned from keeping animals for life. It is disgusting that someone can let their dog get into that state. Good on the groomer who spoke up for that poor animal, that owner thinks she knows it all, she knows nothing about dogs or their care. What she is doing is downright cruel. The woman with the cavalier...good lord, I've had cavaliers since I was a child and none of my cavaliers have ever looked like that. But at least the other owners on that show knew their pets had problems and sought help. That maniac with the first Rottie...she is completely clueless.

Ok Ive had my rant

Just finished watching it, i think the couple with the rotti and the little dog are doing a good job and have realsed they need to lose weght.

The other one needs the dog taking away because its crulty

The programme was sickening. Hate to sound like a dictator in the making, but i always thought people should have to qualify for some kind of license for dog ownership. I know it would probably fail in the midst of endless bureaucracy but there are so many teenagers around my area who encourage their "status symbol" bull terriers to be vicious and nasty. Which results in moral panics and mindless parliamentry actions banning breeds.

I agree with you in theory - in an ideal world. But then in an ideal world we wouldn't need it

The problem with that though is who's to judge what's enough exercise or enough space.... What works for me and my dogs might look like overkill to some, and might look like not enough to others. You can't dictate that kind of legislation because so much varies from individual dogs to different breeds, to different people and lifestyles.

I DO have such issues with overweight dogs though. I was brought up with Dachshunds, and it's such an issue with them. They're built in such a way that even 1lb extra weight can put too much stress on their back and cause slipped discs and worse. I saw a whippet once so fat it had chipmunk cheeks. The lady had just rescued it and had already gotten some weight off it - I can't imagine what it had looked like before that.

I've been working hard to keep Chelsea's weight down. As she's getting older she's putting it on a bit at a time, but if I cut back her food she starts to counter surf and that ended up with her having an obstruction last year. We've finally gone to replacing half her morning meal with frozen green beans and we've gotten just over 1kg off her and she's looking much better for it.

Sorry, think I was rambling a bit there.

Wendy

Could not one of the rescue societys like the RSPCA do something for that poor rottie. I thought they were there toi protect the animals from suffereing and that poor dog is deffinately suffering.

What I've noticed with societys who rescue animals for example the SSPCA and the RSPCA. They are quick in putting pics of dogs who are skin and bone...yet you never see pictures of obese animals. These poor animals have a hard time walking, breathing...imagine carrying as much weight as that poor rottie on that show...the poor animal could hardly walk. Something should be done.

That overweight Rottie on TV last night was really upsetting. I thought the woman who owned it was damned silly to say the least. People who think giving their pets (or children) everything they "want" are misguided and foolish. and as for staying up till 5 am with the dog!! Tut!

Last summer I was approached at a Greyhound Rescue fun day, I'd taken my 2 whippets, and a couple came over with their whippet who was enormously overweight, they wanted to talk about weight and diet and had realised how overweight their whippet was and wanted to do something about it. It would have done no good at all to get cross with them, because they knew, and after seeing all the whippies and greyhounds they realised how much slimmer their lovely dog ought to be ... anyway we talked about food and diet and exercise and talking with their vet about weight reduction etc etc.

I have never seen such a fat whippet tho! It was like a fat labrador, like a barrel with legs ... poor little lamb

The owner of the Rottie just didnt want to know did she??? Knew it all by the sounds of it

at least the other owners could see where they were going wrong and were prepared to try and put it right at least.

that Rottie while it was having the op ......... what a size (w00t)

i watch it also and i was so disgusted with THAT WOMAN   it is so cruel for the poor Rottie,if that dog drops down dead all of an sudden, and she was told because of her weight, would she feel quilty then?she is given that dog a murder sentence  :(

at least the other owners could see the problem and done something about it.

This is the first thing that OH said, but I honestly have no idea where the RSPCA stand on this. Surely the state of the rottie could only be construed as "cruel" and "mistreatment" but I wonder if they have any juristiction in this area. Does anyone know? If they cannot remove an emaciated, beaten, mange sricken dog if it has a bowl of water down, I am sure that there will be nothing that they can do for this poor bitch :(

I cannot believe that a programme like this can be aired without repercussion to such a bad/cruel owner. I kept saying, hang on we need to see what happens at the end of the programme. Maybe she will have the dog taken away, or realise the error of her ways and then show a shot of a new slimline version of the Princess. Alas, it never happened

Does anyone know if it was a one-off, or is there more of this sickening tv for us to endure

I dont think she'd feel guilty at all daledogs :( That for me, was what was so sad. If the dog died tomorrow she'd probably tell everyone (and herself mores the pity) that at least the dog had a really good life

It beggars belief doesn't it. In my opinion the dog should should be taken away from her and quicky.
