Just weighed Roscoe and Grover for worming purposes and they are both 7.3kg/16lb at nearly 15 weeks. They have grown quite tall and look a bit 'ribby'! These are my first whippets and I know all dogs are different so they could just be in a lanky phase but it's cold and I'm paranoid they are too thin!

I'm still feeding them a mix of wet/ dry Pedigree puppy food as this is the brand the breeder was giving them. They are healthy, energetic and lively pups who still scoff four meals a day and are pretty well behaved (for pups anyway!) They each get about three pouches of wet food and a big mug of dried complete each day, spread over four meals, plus a chew/ biccy treat.

Question: would I be better off changing their diet to a better quality food? Is Pedigree ok or rubbish??! Not really looking at BARF ( I know, I know, don't want to start an argument haha), just wondering if there's a better complete food for pups that does dry and wet (they don't like the dried food (even if soaked) unless it's got a bit of wet food in, too.).

Has anyone else got pups around 15 weeks and can you tell me how much food they get/ what they weigh? Cheers.

i recorded my last three dogs weights from 4 weeks old so looking back oliver at 15 weeks was 16lb 2oz ,noah was 14lb 2oz and jacob was 13 lb 7 oz.

so yours are on target of acheiving around 27lb fully grown which is a average size for a whippet, sounds like your feeding guide is spot on to me

we feed a variety which is raw chicken wings , pichards, mackeral in tomato sauce with mixer, or tuna in veg oil with mixer, dried complete food some times, mine also get a variety of raw mince and tripe :x which they love.

supper time they get biscuits and goats milk too.

Thanks Trish, very reassuring! I should really keep a record of their weights for when I get pup three.... :-

they are very addictive arent they

I'd go for a different brand, there are several good pet foods out there that don't break the bank esp. if you get the bigger bags. pedigree has very low meat content and does not get digested very well. I feed my Arden Grange (though Eskil's not too fussy thank god) mixed with wet or mixed with tuna if I want to spoil them. also both Burns and James Wellbeloved are quite cheap, good and sold in most pet stores.

Hi,

I have a very fussy whippetxgreyhound. He pics at his dried, has a big bowl of minced tripe, and has puppy tubos etc.

He has a good layer of fat, although he looks ribby. He is very active,as he tanks around after our other dogs.He weighs 30 lbs.I weigh all my dogs once a week.I think if you are worrying, but your records show they have gained weight each week, then i would,nt worry.I have had two ped whippets in the past, and your weights sound spot on to me.

hi Molly was weighed at 16 weeks and was 7.6 kg so I'm sure yours are fine. A dog trainer advised feeding whippets Arden Grange so thats what I feed Molly with a mix of cooked meat, and sometimes veg and pasta.

Gaynor

I have just changed my lot to Arden Grange, and they seem to be doing well on it.I give the pup sardines, cheese, tuna,he loves raw peppers, any left over veg or potatoes, basically, anything not full of additives. The Greyhound eats anything,as does my other whippet Greyhound.I only ever feed mine on premium dried, the have been on Royal Canin for za year, but have gone off it.It def makes a difference, cheap food equals loads of pooh, well in my experience.

I would expect young whippets to be ribby . I feed mine on a good quality complete food like Burns or James Wellbeloved following the feeding advice on the packet

My Zana's 15 weeks tomorrow and is

all ribby and dangley at the moment.

I must admit i haven't gotten her

weighed since she was 12 weeks so

i don't know what she is but as other's

have said on this post she's sounds as

if she's doing ok as do your two boy's

Hi there..i used to feed james wellbeloved but found Oscar got rather windy!!

Now feed him hills science diet and nature diet.

he looks great on it and NO wind!!

IMO, Hills is a bit overpriced, you can get better quality food for cheaper ;) out of the expensive ones I really like Orijen, top stuff.

 Might switch to Arden/ Wellbeloved based on these replies. I did wonder about Pedigree when I read that it's only 4% meat, and that's probably made up of claws and feathers and rude bits lol.

Here's a pic of the boys on Christmas day - Grover's a bit blurred but v.hard to get two pups still at once and I don't like using the flash!

Your boys look gorgeous  .

Just to add that I feed James Wellbeloved dry for breakfast and with a pouch topper for dinner and can really recommend it, both mine enjoy it and are healthy on it. :luck: with whatever you switch to as I think you are doing the right thing and ditching Pedigree :)

I love the picture of the two of them

As I feed mine a raw diet I can't really comment on what would be best, but

I do keep a bag of Burns at hand for top up or treats!

I would certainly change from Pedigree

My Jinny was EXTREMELY fussy as a pup and sometimes I had to feed her from a fork (w00t)

She wouldn't eat from a bowl either ......... had to have her food actually on the floor!

She is much better now, in fact she is the next fastest eater after Rosie, but she still

won't eat a dry food unless she can "steal" it, lol

Hi Esty

I am glad I am not the only one that gets worried about lean puppies. I had Otis weighed the other day when I was at the vets and he was 9.5kg and he is six months old.

He is extremely fussy with his dinners and I find a lot of things make his poos a bit runny. Currently he only eats his dry food mushed into a tinned puppy food which I purchase from our local vet which is supposedly better quality than the supermarket brands.

I finely dice tripe and mush this into his dinner too - so he has dry food, wet food and tripe. I have tried and found the porridge with goats milk and even scrambled egg seem to upset his tummy.

I have just bought two tins of tuna and will add a little of this into this diet and see what that does to his tummy.

His coat is shiney and soft but I would like a little more covering over those boney bits! Being from NZ too a lot of the brands recommended are not available - so if someone has a breakdown of some of the ingredients and protein/fat levels that would be grand!

I had a look at what foods NZ offers and I can recomend Advance and  a lot of breeders and owners in Europe feed that. Nutragold is rather good too.

Finn was 7.25kg at 16 weeks and Tyg was much the same ... Finn looked ribby though, Tyg who is not as tall didn't ... so if I were you I really wouldn't worry ... I worried a bit about Finn and he is now 18mths, 21" + tts and 32lbs !!

Re. food I was recently given a bag of Skinners Rice and Lamb and a bag of Vitalin and have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of both ... and the dogs love the stuff.
