I THINK THAT FIREWORKS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM BUYING IN SHOPS TO THE PUBLIC.THEY SHOULD BE SOLD ONLY TO PUBLIC EVENTS WITH A LICENSE.DO YOU AGREE?IT WOULD BE FAR MORE SAFER AND NO HOLIGANS WOULD BE ABLE TO GET HOLD OF THEM AND DO STUPID AND CRUEL THINGS TO PEOPLE AND ANIMALS.

yes and no

i think they should be banned completely whether privately or for public displays after all they aren't exactly essential and they cause too much distress to all sorts of animals.

A few years back I did a stint of observing in a Burns & Plastics unit and agree on an outright ban of fireworks being sold to the general public. A friend was telling me today how his mate had spent £140 on fireworks, personally I still think you'd see a much better display at an organised event. Apart from the stress peoples animals suffer, I think it's unfair on people who don't like fireworks, folk who are trying to get babies to sleep etc etc etc

I really can't see any advantages and I think the results of your poll will be overwhelming.

I think fireworks should only be used at organised bonfires/displays.

They are not worth the damage and upset they cause to people and animals :(

Yes, absolutely. Fireworks are also much more powerful and freely available now too. Gelert didn't have any problem with them until some neighbours let of some of the really loud ones very close by, ones which I believe are now illegal; since then he's developed fear of thunder too.

My elderly parents also live in dread of them too, as there have been incidents of them being thrown and pushed through letter boxes, which in fact happened to my grandmother years ago too. :(

Ditto, having been in one myself once. If people realised the pain and grief of having to suffer years of skin grafts to repair the damage, in addition to the initial injury, I'm sure no one would think they were worth it. :(

fireworks should not be available for sale to the general public

My dogs are not bothered by them but the dog at the pub were Ben works is terrified and my mum's old collie x usually hides down her cellar on bonfire night but this year she's 16 and so deaf she isn't bothered she can only hear the very loud onesl

I was in a shop today ahd a fell walked in wanting help to buy fireworks he said it was for his 2 kids to wach and he only wanted to spen £60. ONLy £60! for that he could have gone to the huge display at heaton park with his kids they could have seen the fireworks and big fire gone on the fun fair had something to eat and still had mony for the bus fair home how bloody stuped are theres people. the soner there band the better.

Quote from the DTI page on Fireworks law:

"Under section 1 of the Protection of Animals Act 1911 it is an offence to cause any unnecessary suffering to any domestic or captive animals. The penalty on conviction is a fine of up to £5,000 or up to six months imprisonment, or both. Enforcement of this section of the Act rests with Trading Standards, the Police or the RSPCA as appropriate."

UK Fireworks law

My neighbours have been told that this is the case twice now and yet persist.

Damn right they should be banned from sale to the general public.

Quite apart from the noise and distress they cause to animals and people (not all people like fireworks), I cannot understand why they are still available for the general public to buy. They are explosives for heaven's sake!!!

I am all in favour of organised firework displays for several reasons, the main ones being that (a) the fireworks (explosives) are in the hands of people licensed to handle them, and (b) organised displays only take up one evening.

Currently we are undergoing Bonfire Weekend, and while it's not as bad as it has been in some previous years round here, I am still cheesed off that I have to plan my whole evenings, for weeks, around avoiding fireworks. I don't walk my dogs on a teatime because of idiots chucking fireworks around, one of my dogs is terrified of fireworks and I don't want to be walking him when louts are around, mucking about with them and letting them off at 5 pm.

sure I can call the police, but the damage is done by then.

Another thing I can't get my head round, is the cost!! Like fallenangel says, £60 on fireworks?? Admittedly I live in Yorkshire, married to a Yorkshireman, :- " but if I spend say £20 on something, I want long and faithful service from it - no way would I spend £60 on something which will go up in smoke, no matter how pretty

Well, there's my two-penn'orth.

my dogs arent bothered by them but i truly feel for folk whose dogs are. :( i cant see why anyone wants to set off their own fireworks when the public displays are so good nowadays.you couldnt possibly buy enough to compete with them and even if you could it would cost thousands.im not a spoilsport, but i think folk can still have good fun with their kiddys at the organised displays and theyre so much SAFER

married to a yorkshire man indeed, dump him n marry a lancashire man, and put that fag out

i love fireworks , my kids love em and so do my dogs BUT !!!!!!

YES I THINK THEY SHOULD BE BANNED .

i think there should be one organised display , in each town / village etc . on the same night of the year so the people and animals who dont like it can hide just for the one night.

our display is organised by the firemen so in the best possuble hands

i hate the thought of children and animals suffering the damage done by prats who abuse fireworks , and as you say it isnt just bonfire night any more !!!!

its firework months now ! oct / jan :(

Our local radio station had one at Trentham Gardens a local theme park last weekend I think it was an irresponsible thing to do as they have deer in the woods and also have a monkey park. What happened to these poor deer and the monkey's .I've never been so they have buildings for the monkey's where they could shut them in but the deer are wild and roam freely in the woods and park

I agree totally that they should not be able to sell fireworks to the general public. Personally I'd love to see them banned all together but that may be asking too much. At least if it was organised displays only we would know the time date & venue in advance & if we wanted to we could take our dogs out for the night to escape them.

These days it now seems to be contest to see who can afford the most fireworks & who has the loudest bang. To hell with everyone else!

what annoys me is not so much the peopl;e who have them on the 5th as you would expect that but the ones who have them a week before or after......as we also have horses cats and whippets....and if we dont know a display is happening it is chaos as we have to open up the field for the horses and look for thecats,..... why cant people be considerate and tell you when they are going to have their party....the usual culprits have animals as well.....

yes they should be banned without a doubt,i work in the leeds general hospital and have seen people that have had fireworks explode in their faces, sometimes because of a short fuse, not nice i must say,one man last year lost his sight due to a firework exploding as soon as he lit it.

Agree with everyone totally  our first one went off at around 4o clock, and they are still going on & off  just open the back door to try to get a couple of them who are frightened out for a wee,& BANGall hell lets loose....at least if it was only organised displays we would have most of the evening free to come & go in

& out the garden :)) had my rant too   :))

We had fireworks going off last night   my poor old boy floyd was frighterned to death  panting and shaking poor thing had to have a tablet to calm him down, and we have to go through it all again tonight  my other dogs don,t mind them,

I think they should not be sold to the public. just have public displays that i,m sure would be much better for thoses watching anyway.

got to go through it all again tonight

I`m OK with organised parties but what about November 5th????????????

They go on round here from Oct 23rd until the 5th.
