Being News Years Eve I expect everyone will experience fireworks going off at some point tonight.

Does your dog suffer with fireworks? If so, how do you cope with the situation?

We’re very fortunate that Dennis doesn’t bat an eyelid at fireworks so we’ve never had to worry but I know some dogs suffer terribly.

Jasper's not too bad - he can get a bit whiny and anxious, but if he's allowed up on a sofa he's normally fine (he's only allowed on the sofas when we're not on them as he's not good at sharing). Chances are we'll be in bed at midnight (had plans, but then DS2 got flu) so there might be a bit of panting and pacing.

We found in the past that pulling his bed away from the wall just a few inches seemed to help, leading me to wonder if vibrations were coming through the wall directly into his bed.

About 18 years ago we had a dog who just loved fireworks!! She was a shooting dog, so she knew what all of the banging was about. When the fireworks started she would rush outside looking to see if there were any birds to retrieve, then back indoors and looking through the curtains to see what she might be missing! She got so excited. Even after she died we always joked that the patch of the garden where she was buried was moving around because she could hear the banging.
Unlike 2 of our girls now, who are absolutely fine with gunshot but jump on our laps for a hug when the fireworks are going off. We don't make a big fuss about the fireworks but the girls are always welcome to come for a hug if they feel the need.

Jimmy was very anxious last night. We had about an hour of frequent, loud fireworks, and about half-an-hour or so either side of that of not so frequent ones. He was walking around looking for somewhere to hide, but in the end decided to snuggle up on our bed, right between the pillows with his head across my neck, panting and shaking  Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep, but he seems back to normal now and was OK for his early morning walk. He's usually twitchy with fireworks, but this is the most frightened he's been.

Aw bless him. Not a great feeling that you can’t just explain to them not to be scared!

On a similar note, we had some mad thunder and lightening last night, Jimbo jumped up on the bed and was shaking like a leaf (but no panting like in my previous post) :(. He did decide to lie in the same position as before, so once he settled, I spent the rest of the night - about 4 hours - awake o_O

Dennis was terrible with the storm last night also! Kept pacing round the room all night. Think it was the wind! Feeling sleep deprived also
