We don't pick up Dudley for another two weeks yet but i've been thinking about the first night and what to do. He will be crated. The crate is very cosy with a lovely bed, a blanket (that has been left at the breeders to get lots of mums and brothers and sisters scent), toys, water and is half covered over with a blanket, it's like a little den lol. At the moment the crate is in the kitchen diner, it's right next tho the back doors which I thought would be useful for house training. But On his first night I feel he might be really lonely :( it must be so scary for little pups when they are taken from all they know and I hate the thought of him being scared and all alone  The crate will not fit in the bedroom but was thinking of putting him in the hall way, just outside the bedroom. I have already had lots of different opinions on this.

What did you do? What would you recommend??

Thankyou, Emma xxx

hey emma,

not sure where the best place for the crate is, we had our in the bedroom the first few nights, as i was worried i wouldnt hear them, but they are now in the living room.

i think if you are sure you will hear him if he needs you then i would just keep him were you want him, that way he will get used to it being there.

just wanted to say about the water, we never put water in the crate to start with, but about a week after we got them we were given a bowl that hooked on to the crate, we used it for a few nights only to find they drank the whole lot and woke up throughout the night bursting for a pee. so we stopped again and they slept far longer and didnt wake up bursting.

some people might disagree but it definatly wasnt working for us to give them water at night.

im so excited for you 2weeks!!! :huggles:

Bluebell and I were lucky enough to have a built in Babysitter in the guise of Alfie my Border Collie, so she went into the kitchen with him, not in a crate and never heard a peep - she moved to my bed as soon as she was dry (3 1/2 months - two weeks after her arrival)

I would start with your pup where ever it is to sleep forever, as long as Katie says you can here it.

He's sure to be a bit sad and confused to start with but this is soon forgotten.

lots of luck :luck:

It sounds like you've made the crate into a lovely, snuggly den for Dudley so I'm sure he'll soon see it as a nice place to be. I agree with the others about leaving it where you want it to be eventually as long as you can hear if he gets very upset. Otherwise, he'll get used to being one place and then might be unsettled again later on when you move it. Can't wait to see pics of the little fellow when you get him - how many sleeps is it now???

Jill

Jinny arrived at nearly 9 weeks old and slept in bed with us from night one :D She never once wanted to wee during the night and when I got up in the morning, my first job was to carry her downstairs and out into the garden - no problem

Now she is older she chooses where she sleeps, sometimes on the bed, sometimes downstairs on the sofa and quite often in the igloo beds on the landing :D

We did the same with Ella, Irie and Sox and none of them have ever needed to get up in the night for wee/poo.

It really is the easiest and most comforting way for the puppy to adjust to life away from his siblings and mum, but not everyone wants them in bed with them  so if it's not for you have to start as you mean to go on and be strong if he cries all night :(

:luck: :luck: Good luck whichever way you choose, Emma :huggles: .......... only 2 weeks (w00t) - the countdown has begun :D

Hi Em

we put Izzy in the ultility room at night from day one. Thank heavens for my aunt with lurchers ,who advised me that on the fist night she would cry, but that beyond this she would be fine. All too true, but the first night was not a pretty sound!

Just remember she will be a lonley baby, but she is safe and will get used to being alone in a strange place.

Good luck :luck:

ps was really nice talking to you in chat last night

Hi Emma

As the others say I would put the crate where he is going to sleep in the future. I really do think it is best to crate though, it helps with training and keeps them safe. Ruby loves her crate, it is her own space. She had hers shut at night until she was about 6 months old, now she sleeps in it, or on/in my bed, as she chooses. But if I wasn't happy with her sleeping on my bed I would have continued shutting the crate at night. She goes happily into her crate if I have to go out during the day. She has water in it during the day but not at night.

She has NEVER wet or messed in her crate, although I did have to let her out about 5 am at first.

Getting more excited? I bet the days are dragging. I was like a kid waiting for Xmas.

Oooo good advice here, just taking it all in!!

4 weeks for me Emma and I am so so unbelieveably excited, you must be going mad just waiting and its so soon!!

Can't wait to see more pics of Dudley. Have a great visit!

Oh and we are putting our little girl in the middle room in her crate den, I am gonna have to be so strict with myself in the night! Will be so tempted to let her sleep in the bed!!

I always recommend people to take their new puppy to bed with them at least for the first couple of nights. They are confused, first time without their mum and siblings, being left totally alone at night in strange place is traumatic for a little puppy. So they scream. I would not worry about not hearing them :) . The whole street will hear them. :)

Through the day however I would close the bedroom door and teach them that the crate is their place, nice safe, warm den, with their toys. Once they are happy in there, and settled in, I would leave them there overnight. They may still cry, but not anywhere as much. They will cry because they would prefer to be in bed with you, not because they do not know where they are, they are missing their doggy family and are frightened.

Oh my word Pauline... It's pure TORTURE!!!! lol want these 2 weeks to fly by, i'm ridiculously excited!! I'm planning on doing a 5am "wee time" too  I'm not allowed Dudley in the bed unfortunatley :( OH said he should be kept downstairs as we have a cat who spends most of her life upstairs (she's called Rosie, a wee sweetie) So we have agreed that downstairs is Dudley's space and upstairs is Rosie's space and we have a puppy gate to separate the two areas :b Hopefully it will work out ok... Will see how it goes I suppose. Thanks for your advice :)

Hope you and Ruby are well. Emma xxx

Hi . All my whippets sleeps in crates . The two boys in a huge one in front room together , the baby of the two (13 wks old ) goes to bed when told . Bless him . And my girl sleeps in crate in bedroom but you can leave the door open and she will not move from it all night . I was worried about the pup downstairs at first so i used a baby moniter so i could hear him better .

here thats a good idea, we have a baby moniter that you can control from the parent side, and talk through to kids/pups. we didnt need it as the pups crate is so close to our room if they twitch we can hear them, but if they were downstairs or somthing, definatly 100% would have used it

Hopefully will have some photos soon, I have been obsessively checking my emails twice a day!!

I think the time will go quickly, its just waiting makes it feel like ages.

We might take the pup to Wales later on in the summer to stay with my dad in a caravan!! Not sure if it will be too soon tho??

My mums friend did this, still put pup in crate but slept on the sofa nearby. She didn't sleep a wink!! But I'm sure it helped pup for first couple of nights.

Think I might sleep downstairs just for first night, keep my mind at rest, if pup needs me I will be close by.

Oh my!

Sorry for my quote incompetence!

Our sofa is quite comfy too. I wouldn't sleep upstairs anyway so may as well be nearby!!

Do you have any more pics yet?

:D
