we havent shown for a decade now but i still remember all the rosettes and prize money we got when we started over 30 years ago.as time goes on yes they are dust collectors and you tend to only keep the main ones like bpis, bis and ch sh wins cc's etc.but i still think theres a case for them cos newcomers do like to have something to show for their hard earned win,its like a reward for their day out.by they way i go to about 4 trade shows a year 2 at the NEC and one at harrogate and a couple in london.all the parking is free i wondered if the parking at crufts at the NEC is free when they have a dog show there?and if it isnt free then why not?the trade shows we attend there have far many more people and cars there than at crufts with all the overseas traders as well as the uk ones.

Well at all the events AND trade shows I have been to at the NEC the parkig has been the same price as at Crufts - this is the standard amount set by the NEC.

There was a full breakdown of the Crufts income and expenditure in the dog papers a couple of weeks ago (following their AGM) I think the NEC cost 1.2million to hire just to start with...

Yes, when I have been to Gardeners' World Live it has been the same price as at Crufts.

Kris is right about the two big trade fairs, The Spring Fair and The Autumn Fair, parking is free. It might be down to the event organisers and might be subsumed into the charge to the exhibitors (Trade Stand Holders). The Fairs take many more Halls than Crufts (it is huge) and do not have a paying public as such. So maybe it is an option availble to those hire the venue, and with or without might mean a different scale of charges. I'll try and find out.

car parking at the NEC is freefor the Championship Cat show and the camping and caravan show

i think most of us do appreciate just how much things cost etc prehaps not as in depth as the show organisers of course but with entry fees rising amongst other things i would hope there would be enough money spare to buy rosettes ?? forgive me if i am wrong but £22 per dog per class ( i know its cheaper if you enter more than one class of course ) and some say they cant afford a £1-£2 rosette :( something is going wrong somewhere then :(

I think that with almost complete withdrawal of sponsorship from Pedigree there is almost a NIL chance of rosettes being given at Champ shows, they are having enough problems trying to raise enough sponsorship to cover ringcard numbers etc

I always used to complain about the entry fees compared to the prize money/rosettes when I was British eventing.

That was until I became a secretary for one of them and got involved with the finances of running the horse trials.

When I found out the cost of things that I hadn't even taken into consideration I will never again complain about entry fees.

Simple things such as cleaning the roads each day after the event, if the ground was muddy (a council requirement), hiring sign posts from the AA, advertising, technical delgates fees (I would imagine there is an equivalent with the Kennel club), stationery, postage costs all ran into hundreds of pounds.

Instead of the event making the vast profits I had expected, it ran at a loss for several years and finally had to stop running.

Wendy I agree totally with what you say and my one bugbear is also having to pay for car parking. Petty really when you consider the money we have already spent out!

1st prize winners, CC winners, res CC winner, and bp in each sex.
I'm pleased just to get placed so don't mind if I'm only given a bit of card :b but I do think its very disappointing not to see rosettes for class winners and for the other big wins, CC, Res CC, BP, BV etc.

Mind you, if all the predicted massive rises in food and heating costs happen, the classes might not be much bigger than the main places anyway  :(

I think Windsor is one of the first shows that I have noticed a drop in entries. I really don't believe it is because of the judge either.

This year first entry was £24 with £4 for the car park, which is up on last year. What with the rise in fuel cost in the last couple of months, i'm wondering if we are going to see a noticable difference. Sorry slightly off topic.

Blackpool seemed well attended how did the entries there compare, does anyone know?

Be interesting to see how the next shows pan out.

I know 6 people, a total of 14 dogs not going to Windsor for reasons nothing to do with the price of petrol.

It is a real pity if petrol costs cut down the entries

First entry was £21 & car park was free.

Yes I see your point re the fees. However what I really meant was how did the number of entries compare with last year?

Edited to say sorry for hijacking the rosettes question. I think it is a shame about the lack of rosettes at shows but can see the other side about the costs to run a show.

Windsor last year under a non specialist was 256 dogs 268 entries, this year is 187 dogs. Maybe because of last years mud bath folk may have been put off?? My bet is the entry fee/c. park.

i think the trade stand holders probably do pay the cost of everything at the trade shows Jenny cos ive got a few friends who have had stands there and they cost thousands of pounds just for the smallest one!nick who owns Nemesis Now has one of the biggest stands there and he gets bigger each year and i know it costs him a packet.just for an extra light socket youre talking hundreds of pounds!theyre charged extra for the lights they have and a friend who has the smallest stand space available was charged 6 thousand plus extras!theres no charge for entry either as long as youve registered beforehand.i havent a clue what is charged at dog shows for trade stands but im sure they pay quite a bit for them?daughter and myself were amazed that people had to buy their own rosettes, surely they can provide them for the winners at least?if the society is buying them in bulk id have thought theyd get a trade discount anyway?

I wonder what the absenttee rate will be too , we had quite a few absent on Sunday .

don't know much about the showing side I'm involved with the NNWRF non-ped whippet racing and we occasionally give out framed certificates as a change from trophies they are a very economical award which can be designed free on computer and printed off either on card or paper and laminated or framed overall cost for a framed certificate £1-10p a laminated one about 40p :- "

I know most racers especially newcomers love to receive a keepsake of their dogs achievments

The number of entries was pretty comparable to last year at Blackpool (perhaps better), and actually the actual turnout was better if I remember rightly. Last year there were quite a few absentees in some of the classes, and this year there were only a few missing in spite of the lousy weather.

Do you think there is any possibility they will start to run coach parties to shows again? That would be perfect for me. I could still work the day before, sleep all the way to the show, sleep all the way back and go to work the following day.

I would love to go to shows by coach again. I have mentioned before that 40+ yrs ago I remember going from Hull to Windsor champ show by train. I can't remember what the fare was but we were young and certainly didn't have much money so must have been fairly reasonable. Out of interest I costed it up online this year, the train & tube return fare would cost over £138 [for one!] :- "

Pauline

Forgot to say that price was also with my Saver card
