well it looks like this campaign is having some effect. i was listening to the radio today while driving to birmingham and the broadcaster was saying that hed been in his local supermarket this weekend and all the free range eggs had sold out!he said the only ones left were the battery farm ones.have to say i was in asda at the weekend and their free range ones were outselling the battery ones in there too.wonder how long it will last?do you think people will go back to their cheaper ones when the publicity has died down?

Thats good to hear, I hope it doesn't die down and people keep buying the free range or at the very least the more humane battery ones that have more space and things to do :)

Apparently according to the TV programme the other night (Jamie Oliver was in it) ... some of the supermarkets are already outlawing the cheaper Caged Hens Eggs and they even got the makers of Mayonnaise ...Hellmans to change too...they are changing over in a few months time too.

Its not just the EGGS ....but also some of the products that use them too.

I think its pretty good news all round, its making more people aware of how these chickens are kept. :(

i heard that by 2012 all battery farming will be outlawed. :) i do hope so :luck:

its been on the news tonight that the wirral council has banned all battery eggs effective immediatly.

ive been thinking of getting myself some chickens now that we have a 100ft garden, where do u think i would stand with the council??

dunno about the council but after having some trios of buff rock bantams years ago that we got from my father in law i think youd be better off asking what your neighbours would think. (w00t) in the summer when the sun rises at 3 or 4 am in the morning the cocks starts doing what cocks are famous for.CROWING !!!!and boy do they crow! ;)

errrrr, have you asked little Dana what she thinks of sharing her nice big garden with a couple of chooks? :- "

FREE "THE RANGE CHICKENS"

THEYRE INNOCENT I TELLS YA.....!!!

We've been buying free range eggs for years now, I know they are dearer but we don't eat too many eggs anyway (OH has to keep an eye on his cholesterol) so it doesn't really make that much difference. After watching only a bit of the chicken programme the other night we've also decided to try to buy organic or at least free range chicken from now on. If it means we eat less of it because it's more expensive, then that's fine. I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing the birds have had a good life.

I'm really lucky in having a farmer friend who has a really good farm shop. I only buy free range eggs either from him or another local farmer. The chicken, and any other meat for that matter, from the farm actually tastes as it is supposed to, i.e you know if you are eating beef/lamb/pork rather than it all tasting the same. I love eggs, when my Dad was farming we had hens and the eggs taste SO different. Anyone who is cynical should try and source some free range farm eggs and compare them to supermarket eggs which have a wishy washy yolk and taste of fishmeal. If Supermarket eggs were the only option I would probably give up eating eggs.

We are really lucky too to have our own hens and cockerills....my dad keeps them on a large allottment..free range of course...

I usually replace the older ones with younger birds from the farm where I work.

Its great having lovely fresh free range eggs most weeks, free of charge too. :)

(same here Lal......to Supermarket Eggs....I have never seen such pale yokers... :x )

dana is ok with chickens, it came as abit of a shock when she shot out of the tent at a farm we was camping on, chased this chicken into a cornour and then all she wanted to do was sniff it! (w00t) and her was me thinking that we were gonna have chicken for tea.

im just thinking of getting a couple of laying hens, u dont need the male if u dont want chicks.

We used to keep Marans (hens), the eggs were fantastic.

I hope it does last.

It's only really half the story though. So many other ready made feeds/dinners are made with non free range eggs and chickens, including dog food. It's going to be very difficult to avoid non free range chicken products altogether, but every little helps.

I tried a friend's free range eggs once and they were noticeably more tasty. They keep a couple of chickens in one of those large poultry pens in their garden. I wish i had a bigger garden

As they say at tescos

I think some dog foods don't use battery hens, eg. Burns. Don't know about any others? Anyone know about Naturediet? I know they are BUAV approved but does that just cover testing?

Asda have got a offer on 18 free range egss for £2

We can't hope to change everything overnight but if we do a bit its better than nothing :D

I can't believe I trotted out that bloody awful slogan

We've been to Sainsburies 3 times and every time no free range chickens all sold out. We've just got back in and this time all the cheaper chickens are reduced as they aren't selling them and people still aren't buying them

i watched a tv program about tesco once and how they dictate to foreign farmers what they will pay for fruit and veggies and how when they reject them the farmer isnt allowed to resell them on he has to either destroy them or feed them to the animals on his own farm.it showed the life cycle of a green bean(mange tout) and the farmer said none of his animals could eat them so he has to burn all the crop that was left over he couldnt even sell it to his poor neighbours who would have been grateful for it.the beans had to be a certain length and height and not too curved and not too straight (w00t) they dictated the price at the time of harvesting so the poor farmers have no choice but to sell to them cos if they didnt they would be rotten by the time they could arrange to sell to another buyer.also it showed a village high street before tesco moved into a place and the high street was full of family butchers, bakers fruit and veg shops etc etc after theyd been there 12 months the high st shops were all empty apart from a few charity shops and shops providing the service industry(ie hairdressers, beauty salons etc) :( then it showed a village where theyd campaigned to keep tesco out and it had been organised by a lady who ran a local creche.they carried placards that said tesco- every little hurts.couldnt believe the underhanded tactics tesco used to get rid of her.they bought the creche out and gave money to locals for various things in the community to win people over.she ended up out of a job and tesco still moved in.
