Hi everyone

We have a beautiful whippet boy called Alfie  who we absolutely adore. He is very happy as our only pet but I have always felt that another whippet in our household would make him complete! :)

An unexpected opportunity has come up to possibly take on one of his litter sisters who has recently returned to the breeder.

I'm so excited about the thought of Alfie having whippy company and another dog to love I can hardly contain myself but I want to be rational about this, it's a big step - or is it? As I see it once you've got one dog you're already set up it's just a question of extra food and vet costs/insurance.

My husband is quite keen although a bit worried that our Alfie will only want to be with his new pal and not snuggle up with us on the sofa on our bed etc!

I was wondering how others had found going from one whippet to two. I really think it can only be a good thing but would appreciate hearing your experiences.

Jane

Having more than one whippet is fantastic . You will have the two of them snuggled up beside you on the sofa . ;)

I think you're very lucky to get this chance...its just meant to be and Alfie will be over the moon to have his Sister to snuggle up to I'm sure...just make sure one or t'other is neutered first...

...Good Luck and PLEASE can we see some pictures :D

Whippets are like peanuts, One is never enough!

I am positive you will never regret taking on a second whippet and Alfie will have someone to play with and company when you are out. :)

Hi Jane,

As you are aware we recently added a second whippet to our household and have never once regreted our decision :) Star loves having a playmate and snuggle partner :huggles:

I'm sure your very handsome Alfie  will love having his sister join your family ;) obviously you need to give it a lot of thought as i know you will ;) as for hubby worrying about Alfie not cuddling up to you, he still will  and so will his sister, just means less room on the sofa :- (w00t)

What a great opportunity for you, so good luck in your decision :)

Take care, Sonia xx

Get her, asap, even two Whippets is'nt enough

Hi Jane, I think having two (or even more) whippets together is just wonderful, the bond that they have together is very special and to see them run together is the most wonderful of all.

Getting on for a year ago now, a k9 member Jill posted the same topic http://www.k9community.co.uk/forums/index....c=57714&hl=

She ended up getting Alfie a puppy from the last Citycroft litter, and I know that her family and Blue think that it was a fantastic decision.

Hi Jane,

How old is Alfie? I definitely recommend more than one whippet but i wouldn't necessarily recommend having two from the same litter. I know some people have litter mates on this forum but I personally think an age gap between them is preferable. Obviously this won't be an issue if they are both adults. Young litter mates are obsessed with each other and it can be hard work and infuriating!

Absolutely ... I worried that we wouldn't get our cuddles from Blue once he had another whippet for company but that hasn't been the case at all. In whippet world there can never be too many cuddles and Blue is just as affectionate with us as ever as well as spending lots of time snuggled up with Alfie. And of course, now we've got Alfie cuddles too (and kisses - he's a very kissy boy which Blue isn't) so a typical evening in our house involves being squashed on the sofa between two soppy whippet boys!!! :huggles:

I do agree with JOK, littermates can be a problem. I had Peat for a year before his mother and sister joined us. Peat and Misty were about 2 1/2 by that stage. There were quite a few problems initally and a couple of really nasty fights. It really depends on how old Alfie and his sister are. Be sure to make Alfie feel like top dog and feed them in seperate areas with Alfie getting his food first. If she is not already spayed, having the new addition spayed (or Alfie neutered) before everyones hormones get going may also be a good idea. I do prefer to leave neutering until 18 months to allow full development, but in this instance, I would be tempted to advise spaying / neutering sooner.

I still think a second whippet is the right thing to do and that Alfie and yourselves would be really happy, but as JOK says perhaps litter mates is not the easiest way.

Hello, thanks for your replies everyone,

Both dogs will be almost 15 months old by the time the bitch comes to us.

Alfie has been neutered, done at 11 months due to having both testicles retained  and the fact we didn't plan on breeding from him and he wasn't for showing either.

Alfie is much calmer these days, although he still has some lovely mad moments!

Ive heard that some females can be quite dominent but I don't think that would bother our boy too much as he happily shares his food/toys with any of his friends who happen to be here

In fact he's a big jessie and a nervous piddler at the vets

We're going to meet her and walk them both next week to see how they get along together.

whippets are like pringles there very morish and once you pop you just can't stop! :D ive got one and i need another. you get addicted! x

pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee can we have pictures of them together :D

i think you should get another ,whippets do like company and 2 is just as easy as is 8

good luck x

Will try and get some pics of them together on our walk

Every time I try to get photos of Alfie out and about I get loads with just grass in or the end of his tail!

Good that Alfie is already neutered and is a laid back chap. It will probably work out really well. The ladies can be bossy. I think Alfie will just love having a playmate.

Let us know how you get on and post pictures please. I hope that your sofa is large enough to accommodate 2 whippets and both of you :) I,d hate to think of your husband sitting on the floor! :)

I have littermates, Alfie and his terrible sister, Verity  Had 2 boys to begin, and was offered Verity a few months after Alfie came to us. They were about 9 months when she arrived. It did totally change the dynamics for a while, but being a bossy little mongoose she was soon Queen of all Whippetland. :D They are very, very good friends together and I would never go back to just one

Good luck, and I bet Alfie will be a very happy boy ;)

I would really recommend two whippets. :huggles: :huggles:

We already had Bobby (a Collie X) when we got Dolly as a pup. Although they got on well they never snuggled up together or had a real closeness.

When Dolly was 3 I finally persuaded OH to let me have another whippet and along came Remmy, who was then 10 months old. I have never regretted it for one moment.  Dolly and Remmy snuggle up together a lot and seem to have a real bond.

A recent photo - catching the sunshine. (They do have nice comfy beds, not just a bit of doormat!!).

Go for it girl...

Id always just ever owned one dog...until 2004 when Oscar came into our lives...he was only 8 months and I got another puppy Kobi...and

now have three whippets with our third addition Archie 2 years ago.

As long as you do the homework and know exactly what you are taking on and can manage everything I dont think you will regret the decision.

Good luck... :luck:

Oh that's so exciting! One whippet is fun, but two is more fun :D They have lots of joy together.

I also wanted just 1 dog, my husband 2. When our first girl was 1,5 years old I realised a "sister" would be so fun for her, so she would always have a little sister to play and run with. So we decided to take a second whippet. I have no regret!

Here's an old topic of my two girls when we just had our 2nd whippetgirl:

It's just great to know and see they aren't lonely and have a friend.

They also care for eachother. It's so sweet.

Wish you all the best
