Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone had heard of a whippet pup suffering from glaucoma? Had Kaiser to the vets today as he has been suffering from bloodshot eyes and the vet seems to think he has all the symptoms of glaucoma. He will be having the correct test done next week as his eyes are to sensitive at the monent.

I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has known of a dog who has had this condition as I myself have never heard of a dog with glaucoma. Any information would be a great help!

Cheers from a very upset whippet owner! :(

yes iv'e heard of it in dogs,( i have glaucoma as well ), as anyone who can remember sup/rch chloe she had problems with her eye's it only occured when she was about 4 year old, i had her to a top animal eye specialist vet near penrith call gary llywenn and he checked her for gluacoma but that was'nt the problem it was the muscles around the eyes that were tightening making her pop-eyed eventually she went completly blind and i had the very hard decision to have her put to sleep.

this a pic of her about a month before she went blind as you can see her eye's are very enlarged.

i hope you find what the problem is and is put right.

One of my pup's suffers from blood shot eyes I took him to the vet's and he said it had to do with the dog being over exited and this burst's the blood vessels in the eye. and was nothing to worry about hope this turns out to be the same problem as you have and that all the results come back clear. :luck:

One of my older dogs Ebony Dawn has had one of her eyes removed due to Glucoma, her other eye is still very cloudy but is being treated with drops to make her more comfy, when we first noticed she had problems with her eyes it looked as though they were bulging outwards as though being pushed from behind, it was decided by the Vet that the best solution was to remove the eye that was giving her a lot of pain, as she was practically blind in that eye we decided to go ahead with the op.

I must say it was pretty horrific when we seen her afterwards and it did take her and us a while to adjust, I still sometimes wonder whether we did the right thing in getting her the op, I know lots of folk wouldnt have gone with it. However she is now 13 and manages well with the one eye. The eye she has left only has limited site but she knows her way around our house and garden and isnt in pain due to the drops when she goes out with us she is always on a lead but still manages the occasional run at the park.

Hope this helps and good luck with your dog.

Val

Just come across this topic. I own Moany Moany LJR :)) .

Yes she did suffer from Glaucoma as a pup, it was very uncomfortable for her and she was in a lot of pain, her eye swelled outwards and would constantly water, she would cry and rub her eye all the time. The first vet we visited said she had a detatched retina and fetch her back at 6mths old she'd go to a specialist and see about having it operated on  . 4 months of pain and we took her to another vet at 6mths and he said no doubt about it the eye must come out.

I know where you are comong from Val, I will never forget the phone call I got to pick Blaze up, you could hear her screaming and howling in the surgery at the other end of the phone, we arrived and she was laid on a towel with blood pouring down her face, onto her chest and leg and soaking into the towel. Not very pleasant, but Blaze had to go in for a second op. to correct a fault in the original surgery.

Paws crossed however that things have been fine since, the vet did say that there is a risk that the other eye could just go at any time. What decision will we make then ? It will be hard to tell.
