Hi all

I am heading off to see a litter of whippet puppies in two weeks time they will be just under 4 weeks old at that stage. The person is not a known breeder, he has one dog and one bitch he keeps as pets, they also hunt for him, they produce a litter once a year. There are 8 in this litter. Can you give me advice on what to look for, questions to ask etc.

Ok I know I should see sire, dam and pups in same room. See how pups behave in the house. He is currently keeping them in the garage not sure if they will have access to the house. Is this a bad sign? Is there anything else I should look for? I intend to visit regularly untill the pups are 8 weeks old. I also intend to have a vet check the chosen one for any health problems. Should I wait till 8 weeks for this?

I personally don't think any of this seems "ideal" ........Is the litter kennel club registered ??? is it also line bred, working bred etc ....?? ..........If the poor bitch has produced a litter once a year, how many litters has she had ?? .........And WHY would anyone bring a litter of pup's up in the garage ?? .......I never like the fact that the unknown "breeders" own both the sire and the dam, but this is just my personal opinion :) ........... :luck: :luck: if you decide to get the pup .........Hannah.

4 weeks old and IN A GARAGE (w00t)

Mine is in the spare bedroom and then he will come down to a pen in the sitting room where he will experience what goes on in the household. Normally puppies would be in my kitchen but as mine is a singleton he will be treated slightly differently.

This litter is certainly not my idea of bringing puppies into the world and raising them.

What to look for?

My advice would be to try and look for some more puppies as well as these as you can at least compare looks, rearing, temperement etc.

I dont want to run this person down AT ALL because you may have just written the discriptiion of things a little starkly. But play safe and see some more puppies even if you are unable to have one most good breeders will not mind at all if you ask to come and see them.

Now lets be honest . there are garages and garages . My sisters garage is fully heated and better than most kennels and some peps houses .

As for condeming them because they own BOTH the dam and sire . thanks . Ive used my own dog on my own bitches more than once , :- "

The main thing is :

are the pups healthy looking ,

do they come out to greet you tails wagging ?

does mum look healthy , not like a hat rack ( sorry , no excuses for that) , if she is then she not had enough food , simple as that , my feeding bitches have at least 4lb meat A DAY

Saying that, I would worry the fact that he continually breed these two together , sounds to me like hes producing pups for CASH . best you look else where IMO

are you looking for something specific ie racing/show or just a pet...Could you get one from the breeders on K9??

There are a few pups going

Im no good because i just fall in love with the pup and would buy it if it had one leg :- "

Good luck either way

This is very difficult to advise. If you lived just tad closer i would offer to come with you :) .

We serious breeders hate the idea of people who get a bitch and dog and lets them mate everytime she comes in season. That is wrong, world is full of unwanted dogs, and pups should not be produced just for sake of it. On the other hand i have known some registered breeders with show winning stock who had pups in delapidated shacks full of rats. But then again once I went with a friend who insisted on getting a pup without papers (not a whippet) this breeder had the pups in the house, the pups were clean and fat, wormed, vaccinated and each came with it's own sheepskin to sleep on.

So just look that the pups are fat, healthy, their eyes should be bright with no discharge, their ears clean, their coats soft and shiny, their skin clear and elastic, their abdomen should not be distended, their breath should be sort of garlicky. Look for any droppings which should be firm. It can be difficult to judge the bitch's temperament in presence of her pups, as sometime even the sweetest bitch can be protective of her babies. And the breeder should not be willing to let the pups go before they are at least 8 weeks.

Well, in the end it is your decision :luck: and keep us posted :)

I thought your poor little lad looked so badly done to - on your bed!!!!

same advise as above, but also ask if there is any crypto/mono in the line, and also if it's a boy pup your going for, have a quick feel to see if he has his little pea's in place :D

good luck :luck:

Thankyou for all your replies, I am looking for a whippet as a pet. This guy has informed me the dogs he has have champions in their bloodline? He says he has papers and will register the pups with the kennell club, have them microchipped, wormed etc.. I really have no idea about whats right and wrong when it comes to breeding. I am involved in animal rescue where I deal with the "so called muts". I believe all pets should be spayed or nuetered. I have never dealt with breeders before. I would take a whippet or whippet x from rescue but they dont seem to come along too often. I am not particularly interested in pedigree as long as the dog is healthy and has a sound temperment. I am concerned about what this breeder will do to socialise the pups. This person IS selling these pups. The price however is not as much as you would expect to pay for a purebred whippet. I will be going to see them but I have by no means agreed to purchase one from him. I want to see the parents, the papers, where the pups are sleeping, what he is doing to socialise the pups etc. Is the general opinion that I should not go to see this litter?

Excuse my ignorance but what is crypto/mono?

Also Jax can breeding these two together every year cause medical problems? I have been told the bitch is 4 years old, so I guess she has had three or four litters

OK then, the bloke needs stringing up by his "little peas" as Tina puts it lol

I would go for a look, and listen very carefully to your gut feelings. You sound pretty sensible to me :) and will obviously consider everything before you make a decision

As Jax says, there are garages, and garages

I know of one top breeder ( no longer with us :( ) who quite often repeated matings ( as I have done myself ) but she did it because they were SO good and produced Champions in every litter , not purely to make money , which is what this chap appears to be doing IMO . Theres nothing wrong in repeating the litters , after all ,WE do dont we ;) and our children dont get weaker by repeating the `mating ` do they :- "

If you can get a copy of the pedigree and let us know what the breeding is , but personnally i would give him a wide birth , he just sounds as though he is a one bitch puppy farmer to me . theres plenety of well bred , well loved and cared for pups out there with out giving him your money IMO

2 litters is enough for any bitch IMO

Cyrpto/ mono means one or no testicles , this can lead to problems for the dog and expence . But you probab;ly wont be able to see them until 6-7 weeks at the earliest

Do u kno this Man personally Sarah or have u answered an ad?

I do not know him personally, I have spoken to him on the phone on a couple of occasions. I put an ad in the local paper offering a loving home for a whippet or whippet x. None have come up in the local shelters so I thought id try an advert. Probably not the best idea

 Just saw a beautiful whippet x on irishanimals website but she is not good with cats :(
