Hi I am new to this forum and would appreciate any help regards socializing a rescue greyhound with my cats, I am wanting to home the greyhound so I am trying to get her used to my cats, she has taken well to my Jack Russell so no problems there, but cats she is rather keen to have.

Has anyone any experience of this and will she eventually live along side them or I am asking to much as she is excited by them?

Has she come through a greyhound rescue? You can get greyhounds that are okay with cats from the Retired Greyhound Trust.

If she has not come through a rescue, you will just have to keep telling her not to chase the cats. She may get to be okay with yours, but like all sight hounds will have a go at strange cats!!!!!!!!

Good luck. :luck:

Our ex racer is fine with cats. She came to us more or less straight from the track. She came from Yarmouth so Posh Totty collected her and looked after her for a week. She met her cats and if I remember rightly she did try to chase them.

We met up with Posh Totty the following week at Peterborough lurcher show were we also got her a muzzle. When we got home we introduced her to my show greyhound and whippets . She was a bit grumpy with them but to be honest they were very in her face.

We have a cat but he is semi feral and only occassionaly comes into our house. He chose the day Button arrived to come into the house so again we put her muzzle on. Gizmo is a very confident cat around dogs. He has known most of my whippets since he was a kitten and he will not run from them in fact he bullies my show greyhound.

Button went up to him but because he didn't run he just spat at her she soon got fed up with him. Now she is happy for him to come into the house on the second occassion she met him she pushed her luck to much and he scratched her she now knows to leave well alone.

If your cats are confident around big dogs and will not run she may learn to respect them. If your cats run from her she will most likely chase them.

I will say that any cats that go into my back garden are considered fair game and not only the greyhounds but the whippets and even my setter will chase them. Gizmo has only ever once gone into the back garden he always comes to the front door.

Hi thanks for replies, she has come from a rescue where they said I could take her and see how she goes on with my cats, she is a very good tempered girl who has put up with my very grumpy JR to say the least and has not even snarled at him, I keep introducing her to my siamese who is not afraid of dogs, she has a muzzle and is on the lead when this is done but she makes excited noises and has tried to snatch him!

Put him in Jrs cage tonight to see if she would relax around him,

She is the most gorgeous girl and very sweet and I know things take time, but its getting her used to four different cats as well. All help appreciated.

when i brought my greyhounds home, 3 rescue and my own racer, i used muzzels but what i found most effective was a washing up liquid bootle filled with water and everytime one of them took more than just looking intrest in them i squirted them in the the face it took several goes but then they realised that they weren't allowed to chase good luck

(w00t) Still trying but she is very interested in them and makes a snapping sound with her jaw, just like a crocodile(she is muzzled ) will try the water advice, thankyou, did yours eventually accept your cat? and how keen were they?

Yes they all did, but outside others were fair game, its a battle of the wills, you have just got to keep at it, they were all very keen and if not muzzeled they would have grabbed them but cats are fiesty things i would not have a lead on just make sure they are in one room when you squirt the water as she then associate that she can't chase them,

in the end all the greys got used to the cats,

it can work !!

Good Luck

I know someone who for years has always had rescued greyhounds and she has cats . She said in all her years of rescue greyhounds she only ever had one who she could not train to accept her cats . Outside though is a different story and even my whippets who have always lived with cats see outside cats as fair game (w00t)

Brill thanks for all your replies it has really helped, and I will continue and let you all know our progress over the next comimg weeks and months as she really is the most adorable girl and gets on great with rambo my JR.

I never expected her to get along with cats outside the home that would be expecting too much, even Rambo would chase a cat outside home!! fair game lets play he says!! ;)

I can't find a photo of my ex racer Button with my cat but this is Gizmo pinching my show bred greyhound William's tea. Gizmo actually bullies William but then he is a big wuss
