It is gruesome, the local council brought it in to a local reserve type place last year, horrific how they were allowed to do it

iv heard of this myxi disease but only through a poem it looks horrible but what does it actualy do to them does it eventually kill them? i take it its not the type of disease that can be passed to you or your dog?

sorry but i just dont have a clue. yet im interested as my old friend did gamekeeping for a while and i used to tag along but then he gave up so now back to being clueless.

It is horrific, yes its put down by farmers landowners, councils, to rid an over populated rabbit infestation, what does it do to them, well i could show you, in fact theres pics up under working and lure coursing should you wish to go see, festering sores, bleeding eyes, just sitting there in open fields waiting to be picked off by my local buzzards, slow death either way, but my way is quicker, terrible disease, can the disease be passed onto your dog, answer is no

Forgot to add, does the disease kill them, no not all some recover

thats terrible, i mean i knew it was pretty bad, but why on earth would you put the stuff down if it didnt kill them.

my friend used to shoot the rabbits and he had ferrets than he sent down the holes which i found rather unsetteling but the farmer was over run by them and was having trouble controlling them so i guess it was the best way, but to give them a disease that gives them a slow and painfull death thats wrong.

oh thanks but no thanks i really dont want to see pics your discription was detailed enough. :x

this is where the ban really gets me angry, its ok to leave something having a slow lingering death, that is ok  yet for a dog to chase and kill swiftly thats "cruel" yer right!!!! the man who made that dreadful disease, well you dont wanna know what id wish on him!!!

well done keith and jilly , at least you are doing something about their suffering

i have a message for the government - YOU KEEP YOUR BULLSHIT IN WESTMINSTER < WE WILL KEEP OURS IN THE COUNTRYSIDE!!! :)

Hi, this dreadful disease started in the 1950s, I was working in a kennels then. it was quite horrific to see these poor animals, swellings round their eyes and ears, mouths all puffed up, hardly able to eat, just sitting waiting to die. We put lot out of their misery, it was horrid, they squealed so. I was only 16 then and found it very traumatic. This terrible disease was introduced from Australia in the 50s, the worst thing man could do to british wild life.

Forgot, this disease goes in cycles, nobody can control it. You can vaccinate pet rabbits against it though, not all infected rabbits get it, some recover and gain natural immunity.

The ban doesnt cover rabbits!?

It's only a very very small percentage that recover and become immune - the youngsters seem to have a natural immunity but it's rare for the older rabbits to survive.

best thing to do is let the dogs end their suffering and then we take the bodies to a bird of prey rescue.

BTW vaccination doesnt give pet rabbits a 100% immunity they can still catch it , but it should be less severe and they have a better chance of survival if given proper care.

Myxi is only for rabbits, even hares cant catch it, so dogs/people are totally safe.

what i meant was rae , its cruel to hunt something and give swift death , yet ok to legally give long lingering man made death sentance, sorry wasnt meaning that rabbits are banned

One small point, its not a Man made disease its a man introduced disease from S America, not that this deflects from the horror that rabbits who suffer this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myxomatosis

If my memory serves me right Myxi was introuduced by a South Cost Doctor who got a diseased Rabbit from France and let it go on the South Coast Downs.

Think he was Fined £20 for spreading an infection

Then I wish all manner of horrible things on him!! I hate to see myxi rabbits, hate it more when they are sitting prey for my dog, yes I let him take them but it is so sad to see. I'd rather see any prey animal with a sporting chance.
