Stormy dear just don't look at the thread anymore.

:)) We went to get a Hancock Lurcher yesterday. After driving for 2 hours our car decided to break down. After a phone call to David Hancock to say we would be late, he arranged to have our car towed in and after being told the car would take 3 hours+ to repair David and his wife made us endless cups of tea and something to eat. They were fantastic. We looked all round the kennels and were impressed with the set up. It was a bit run down in places but the dogs and puppies were well looked after. We came home with a red merle puppy who traveled well and has settled in with our other dogs. Many thanks to David and Joan Hancock and all the family.

It says it all to me by going, picking a dog and taking it home the same day. People should be vetted, pick a pup, then come back at a later date. How could he know that the people hadn't just decided that morning to "just look" at some puppies? They then take one home with out puppy proofing, having brought food, bed, bowl toys?

Having worked in a bording kennels and looked around trailhound and hunting kennels, the dogs no matter how well cared for and clean the place is do not have the attention deserved or the socialisation required to make good household pets.

I am glad that hpage279 and savageboy have had good experiences but I know that I never would purchase a dog in that situation.

Before I ever got Milo I went to look at a 13week old pup in Whitehaven whom the owner had said had been returned after the new owner couldn't cope.

The pup was beautiful looking but wouldn't come out from under the table, when the guy pulled him out the dog just flopped and wouldn't move. We went outside to his run to see his three whippets (all beautifully kept) two males and a female who he said was the mum - dogs who have had puppies in their life usually have large nipples, it was pretty obvious she wasn't mum. He then turned round and said he had actually promised the pup to a mate and if I wanted one he could get me one cheap by saying it had a bad bite or something. I just walked away.

hi matey , i had arranged to go down to see the pup,s first, and i liked what i saw so i brought me pup , as people usualy do , we spent over an hour there so we were not just in and out , plus i,ve had lurchers terriers for over 20 years so i do no what i,m looking at , cheers all the best . savageboy

some of the best lurchers come from the worst of homes if you like what you see pick your pup at 6 to 8 wks bring it up to your standard just cos it comes from a bad home doesnt mean it will be no good and ive been to handcocks and i must say all his dogs were in good nick fair enough he might not work his dogs but how many border collies have any of you been lamping with so if its first cross your after where ever you buy your pup both parents will probably not be workers as most brood bitches are ex track dogs it doesnt stop the pups doing the job same applys to anything threequater bred or any outcross to a track bred dog at least he uses coursing greyhounds imo theres a difference in stamina in the coursing dogs after all a dog is only as good as you make it.

At last someone who speaks some sense :- " :- "

dam right matey , , its how yer bring yer pup up , show it plenty of work and yer dog should work fine , specialy on rabbits , rabbits are not an hard quarry to catch , if yer canna train yer lurcher to catch rabbits then take up fishing.

cheers savageboy :D

Why did you buy a pup if the whole of the kennels had the squirts it was obviously a bug and in a pup thats not a good thing especially if your gonna work the dog pups that get bad stomach infections often end up being hard to keep weght on when their older either way id be talking to the breeder about a refund for the vets fees as it was as obvious that the pups werent right but surely you talked about it with him bugs do go about and breeders often suffer through this either way the pup shouldnt go anywhere till its fit and healthy whos at fault the buyer or the vendor

WE HAVE A HANCOCK DOG, AND THE WIFE HAD ONE FOR 15 YEARS BEFORE THIS ONE, HIS KENNEL ARE A LOT BETTER THAN THEY USED TO BE, ITS THE AMOUNT OF DOGS HE BREEDS THAT IS THE PROBLEM, IVE SEEN A LOT WORSE RUN PLACES OVER MY 35 YEARS OF KEEPING RUNNING DOGS, jeff

well unfortunatly the council cant say how often a bitch can be bred from but im sure theyd take note of the kennel clubs ruling about only breeding off a bitch once a year and not breeding after a certain age or before its old enough.i know their inspectors can make impromptu visits but from what i know they usually ring and let you know theyre coming out on a certain day......... :- " but surely if people had complained about the state the dogs were kept in the council would act.
