Hi Everyone,

My name is Vicky and I'm new to the forum. I joined a couple of days ago but it's taken me ages to wade through lots of the old topics on here because there are so many gorgeous pictures to look at! You guys own some amazing dogs :)

I own three racing greyhounds (which run at Oxford) however I'm about to move out of my flat into a large house (with a big garden) which means I can have a dog at home again :D I've had a couple of years off having dogs at home and boy do I miss it! The thing is I'm in a bit of a dilemma about what type of dog to get, but I think a whippet may be the answer and I'm looking for advice. Eventually when my greyhounds retire from racing they will be coming home to me, so I need a pet dog which isn't too large otherwise there will be no room for me on the sofa!

I'm looking for a dog I can have some fun with and maybe do some showing and racing etc. but most important I want a lovely family pet which will hopefully get along ok with the greyhounds. Do you think a whippet would fit the bill? And where would be the best place to look to find a whippet?

Any help gratefully received!

Vicky

Hi Vicky welcome to K9 im sure you will enjoy it a word of warning its very addictive  good :luck: in your search for a whippet or maybe two :- "

Hi and welcome to K9. After having many different breeds of dogs over the years, I had a retired greyhound. After she died earlier this year, and because I had enjoyed having a Greyhound so much, I decided to get a whippet. [same but smaller I thought]. I am just so pleased with my whippet, I don't ever want any other kind of dog now.

Hi welcome to K9.Whippet's are the best! Good luck :luck: :luck:

Hi and welcome to K9 .

I originally had Racing Greyhounds , got bit by the showing bug and now have whippets . My GH all lived past 12 years , in fact Jemma was 16 when I lost her .My Affix MULCAIR is an Irish greyhound kennel name .

The good thing about whippets is that you can get at least 3 whippets in the same place of one Greyhound  well that what I told my OH anyhow :D

Be warned whippets are very infectious ;)

Awww...what a lovely family of hounds you have! Great website too. It's really nice to see an example of greyhounds getting along with whippets. I don't want either of them to be unhappy, but yours look very content indeed which gives me some confidence :)

Welcome Vicky. I have whippets, exhibition greyhounds and an italian greyhound

they are all great companions but for your needs I would suggest a whippet as they are a very versatile breed that you can do various activities with from showing, racing, agility, endurance and so on.

In Australia greyhounds need to be muzzled by law when walked in public areas which is a real draw back as if gives the "general public" the opinion they are aggressive when nothing could be further from the truth.

Go to shows and other canine activities and watch whippets and meet reputable breeders, in Australia there is a growing problem of unregistered breeders (backyarders) churning out whippet litters which happens when a lovely breed becomes popular and the puppy farmers jump on the bandwaggon. Stick with responsible breeders.

Hiya and welcome to K9 without a doubt Greyhounds and Whippets, Iggy's are the best doggies  good luck in finding yours

Hi Vicky welcome to k9

I too have whippets and greyhounds I started with whippets and then had William a show greyhound. They get on fine, the whippets were a bit shocked when they first met this great big lump that looked like them but was a lot bigger.I had him at 8 months and he was 28" at the shoulder. They soon got used to him and he is a big wuss anyway.

In October we got Button who is and ex raceing greyhound. We knew the whippets would be ok with her and she soon proved to be an excellent adition to the family she is great with the whippets and even the cat.

When Rosie had pups last year she actually went to William and took him in to the room were her puppies were to show them to him.We bred Rosie and she too has known William since she was a tiny puppy

I agree we need to see some pictures of your greyounds please
