Hello All, I am new here. My name is Alison and I do voluntary fostering for an Animal Rescue.

I am currently fostering my first ever whippet, which is why I have joined this site:

a) to see if he is reported as missing (sadly I have not seen any sign of anyone looking for him)

b) to find out about whippets and their needs, likes and dislikes etc

I have fostered many lurchers over the years, but this fella is quite different - mainly because he is blind, but also because he is on the older side. I usually foster the young lively dogs!

The rescue have called this boy Willow. He came into the rescue at about half the weight of a male whippet. He has put a fair bit on now, but is still thin. I have a problem as he does not seem to ever want to eat very much.

He is extremely gentle natured and his fur is sooo soft....softer than any lurcher I have ever had. I have no idea how anyone could let a gentle fella like this get lost.

One thing that I have already learnt, and that he has in common with many lurchers, is that he loves the settee! :D

Hello & welcome :)

well done for looking out for this little lad, i really hope he finds a home soon :luck:

Hello and Welcome to K9 :D I really hope Willow finds a wonderful home :luck: , sounds like he is doing well already with you :huggles:

Hello and welcome to k9  Yes I think all whippets enjoy hogging the sofa! I also have a whippet who doesn't like to eat much, she will eat normally for a few months and then do some sort of fast where she will eat little or nothing for a few days. I have yet to work her out, perhaps she feels the pressure to be a size zero like all the celebs  I've just learnt to accept her funny behaviour now, if you look at my previous topics on my profile you will find a couple of threads asking for ideas on encouraging her to eat. The favourite thing with her (and probably most dogs) is tripe, pongy but delicious (apparently!).

Good luck with Willow and I hope you manage to rehome him soon :luck:

Thankyou for your kind welcomes!

I have a few pics of the lovely boy here. Lets see if I can post them.

Here he is following me out of the house:

His shaved arm is because I had him into the vets for a dental op last week.

Here is a couple of pics of him a few short weeks ago when he was a little less sure of himself poor lad:

Yes I know what you mean. When he arrived at the rescue back in July, he was about 2 kg less than when he first came to me....and even when he came to me I did wonder if he would survive. He had a horrid infection that needed treatment, but the vets couldn't operate till he had put on some weight.

But dogs can be so tough sometimes and Wills is no exception bless him. :)

What a dear little chap he is

Keep up the good work! You're doing a great job because Willow already looks very different to when he arrived with you

Poor little fella deserves to have lots of love and attention :huggles: :huggles:

  Bless him. He must think he is in heaven with such a caring foster mum. My whippet has never been a big eater but does love tripe (the smell takes a bit of getting used to :x ). :luck: :luck: in finding him a lovely sofa for the rest of his days.

Welcome to K9. we need more people like you....what a lovely home hes found :huggles: .....Willow looks a lovely old chap... :huggles:

Thankyou everybody for your kind words. Willow is gorgeous. Such a gentle soul. I have no idea whether anyone will ever offer him a home - who would want someone elses old blind cast off?

I have bought him two lovely coats - one waterproof, the other just warm - from the "TRPD petcraft project" website. All the money they raise goes towards keeping dogs in rescues warm through the winter, as they use any profits to make coats, fleecy blankets etc and they give them to dogs in rescues - especially greyhounds as they are so needy in the winter. The people who make the garments are all volunteers.

I have just now ordered Willow a woolly pully from another charity website, called k9 knitters. They have lots of lovely jumpers for sale, knitted by volunteers and all profits go towards a rescue known as "the oldies club" which specialises in caring for those old cast out dogs that are down on their luck, due to the inhumanity of their previous owners.

I thought you might like to know about these two charitable sites, as the products they make are very good quality and reasonably priced, and all profits go into helping rescued dogs.

Willow does look extremely settled with you :huggles: hope he finds a truly wonderful new home :luck: :luck: he looks adorable  , big hugs from us :huggles: :huggles:

You asked if anyone would want a blind old boy -YES!! If I had room (and was allowed by the rules where I live) I'd have him tomorrow.

My friend next door adopted a 13+ year old deaf and almost blind girl, who was being starved to death, in january. She is such a character now (though a real velcro girl - she is so attached to my friend) and has us in stitches almost daily!!

I'd ALWAYS take on the oldies in future. they have so much to give ans watching them blossom is a real delight.

My friend was very intersted in this old man - where do you live? Do you really want him adopted - he looks so settled with you and it would be such a shame to uproot him if he has now gained confidence in you and his surroundings.

Sending him lots of love and cuddles. :huggles:
