Hi all

I am a new Whippet Owner and i have been glued to this forum for the last 4 months gaining valuable advice and enjoying all of your stories.

I have a 6 1/2 month old Blue Whippet Bitch "BO" who is my new Best Friend (and of course my 4 daughters and OH!)

She currently stands at 17.5" tall, Wears a 18" Outhwaite Coat and Weighs 8.8KG

Do any of you experts out there think she is Small / Average or Large for her age and How big do you think she will get ??

She is Fed Tripe along with JWB and enjoys the odd bowl of Goats Milk (warmed up of course)

We are looking forward to a busy 2011 as we have just become members of the GLoucester Whippet Racing Team and look forward to our Sunday Morning Training starting soon.

We completed our Puppy Training at the end of last year and we are starting Ringcraft Classes this Wednesday as well.

The aim of all this is to meet other Whippet Owners and have lots of fun in the process

My OH thinks im obsessed but he also secretly loves the bones of her as well

I look forward to all your advice and wish you all a Very Happy 2011

She sounds to me like a petite little girl....my Flint is 6 months old now...and he weighs a lot more than that

and is taller too. I dont worry about the scales really as long as they are eating well and look all right and are healthy.

She looks fine to me...but a standing picture would be better. I wouldnt worry too much, I dont like them too thin

with too much rib showing..and backbone well covered too....but with whippets sometimes its hard to keep weight on them.

I feed mine the BARF diet..and tripe does help with weight gain if you are wanting to put some on.

Flint is still on 3 meals a day at 6 months old, he burns up a lot of calories..

which consist of chicken wings or tuna for breakfast followed by goats milk....

minced lamb for his dinner and a mixer

and minced beef.tripe..chicken for evening meal with mixer and sometimes raw vegges, they also get as odd beaten egg too

and naturual yoghurt.

Hope this helps...she looks a very pretty girl...

Wonderful Many Thanks

Yes I was hoping she would be on the small size (She was the smallest of a litter of 7)

I do incorporate the BARF diet into her meals and give her a few chicken legs also my daughters boyfriend has a show GSD and he brings over some poussin carcass from their local butcher which she loves.

Do you recommend Tripe? - I only ask as this is what the breeder fed her on so I have carried it on. I also give her Tinned Pilchards every so often as she loves these as well along with the odd boiled egg with the shell on -

I have attached a standing Pic but everytime i get the camera out she lies down !

Thanks once again for the help

Great see you on the 6th ,

I am really looking forward to it, although everyones names and Dogs will take me a while to get to know.

We are really excited + ready to learn from you all

Bo looks fine to me. She certainly does not look underweight.

My Lilly is 6 years old 18" and with a similar looking build but a little broader and with a bit more muscle.

She weighs 10.5KG but she is pure muscle from lurecoursing (muscle being heavy).

My Daisy is 17" and 2 years old. She came to me underweight due to a bowel disorder. She presently weighs 8kg but is not as well muscled as Lilly yet. I would expect her weight to stabalize at 9kg eventually.

Bo's weight and diet seem perfect. She still has nearly a year of growing to do and I would expect her to gain another inch or two. Most of that gain you will see in the next 3-6 months.

She is quite young for racing so please do not over do it. Just my personal opinion but just short races / fun runs untill she reaches about 12 months would be best. Her bones are still growing and her joints will change to accommodate that growth. Excess stress on her bones and joints while growing could store up damage for later in life or affect her proper growth.

She is a beauty and has such a sweet face.

She looks lovely...........All the best with her :luck:

Yes Lesley at Gloucester has said the same - they will ease her in gently - Our first year will be mainly learning what goes on and seeing how well she adapts to all thats going on around her, Short distances to start and we will take it from there. i will be taking everyones advise as I am still very much a novice at owning a Whippet and learning all the time

I will be doing it mainly as a hobby and as a fun method of excercise for Bo.

Im looking forward to seeing her mature over the next year but secretly wanting my little puppy to stay a puppy for ever !!!

Oh my god she looks like a clone of my Dotty!! She is beautiful  Dotty was also the smallest in the litter and still is just a little Dot (hence the name). She is now just about 18in and weighs 9.7 kg shes 2yrs and3 months. Your pup looks far better at six months than Dotty did, She only started to pick up with her weight after she was speyed. I to have been thinking of racing her but there doesn't appear to be any whippet racing in our area, :( South East Wales, which is a bit of a shame cos she is a real little pocket rocket!! Good luck with yours! :D

Yes she does doesnt she - how canny

We got her from a lady in Taunton and all of the litter were either Blue or Black and all had 4 white paws and the little white tip.

I chose her because she was small and she has a little white stripe on the back of her neck.

Im hoping she stays small just like your Dotty

You should defo bring Dotty to Gloucester after they get the hang of it we could have all biddy blue races with Bo, Dotty and my Daisy and Dexter (w00t)

Your little girl is a real poppet, very pretty  I have Gracie who will be 2 years old in March and is a dainty little girl at 17.5" tts and weighs 10kg and, although she's nicely covered and does not have any knobbly bits, she's not carrying excess weight. She was spayed last October and I think that did make a difference as, up to then, it was quite difficult to keep weight on her. Milo is the other end of the scale and stands 21.5" tts, will be one year in March and weighs 15kg. He still needs to fill out and is lean and still a bit gangly. I feed mine on Burns and Royal Canin complete but they do have fresh chicken, sardines, tuna and mackerel. Good luck with Bo.
