It's my birthday next month and I've decided that this year I'd like to go on a city break rather than going to The Lakes (w00t) , just to try something different.

Can anyone recommend anywhere? I'd like to go somewhere with interesting historical buildings, modern architecture too, nice places to eat etc etc. It really needs to be within 3 hours train travel of Manchester, as it will only be one overnight stay.

On my shortlist so far are:

Cambridge

Newcastle

Durham

Liverpool

The following are ruled out because I lived there or very close for 10 years and 2 years respectively and have been back since:

London & Oxford

Can anyone recommend a great city break?

I was going to suggest coming down to Ludlow - but that's not a city!

How about Bath or Bristol??

What about Bath?

Beautiful architecture and full of history and hot spas!!! Plenty of nice restaurants too

Not sure how long it takes by rail but you can fly from Manchester to Bristol

Bath is a good suggestion...but may be a bit far...I'll have to look it up on the timetables.

I've ruled out flying in the UK as I don't like airtravel :sweating: and it's not very environmentally friendly :b

My best friend lives in Bristol and on a good run it takes us under 2 hours from North Shropshire - so I would think you get to Bath in 3

I love Bristol - we've had some brill nights out there - we're going down on 10th Nov, starting off at a Winter Wine festival

Know what you mean - I don't do air travel either, it throws me into a total panic attack (w00t)

Good luck arranging your birthday break - let us know what you decide on and don't forget the pictures! :luck:

Obviously Liverpool.Everything you need for a brilliant week end.History,Culture,Nightlife and so much more.

Well Im biased living here Nicola

but judging on the sort of person you seem to be ..in the nicest possible way

I am almost certain you would absolutely love Durham...its 15 miles from me

and Im sure you would love the buildings, river and Cathedral etc.

Newcastle too is steeped in history but I just have a feeling Durham would be much more you. :)

Oh - Ludlow!!

I've heard great things about Durham too, and would like to see it one day.

However, I can recommend Bath for a weekend, its local to me and I never get tired of going there - its got interesting history and lovely architecture, good hotels, obviously the newly refurbed Roman Baths, Jane Austen Museum, great shopping including antique markets and old map shops, interesting street performers, lovely gardens and river right in the centre, and its all very compact and easy to walk around and take everything in during one day.

We can do Bristol to Manchester in 3 hours in the car, so I imagine Manchester to Bath would be much the same, seeing as Bath and Bristol are such near neighbours.

(edited to add I just saw that you wanted to travel by train - not sure about the train links to the south here, although Bath train station is right in the city centre.)

Bristol is also local to me and I lived there for 18 years which has unfortunately prejudiced me against it. Its too urban and gritty, and too spread out for a good "see it all" city break weekend (and what is there to see, except the waterfront and the Clifton Suspension Bridge??). A lot of people seemed to like it though :b

I think you might also like York or Lincoln, Nicola  I've done whistle-stop tours of each and would like to go back to both for longer and see more. I loved The Shambles area of York, and the cathedral was amazing. I'd also recommend Winchester but that would be outside your 3 hours travel limit unfortunately.

Let us know what you choose in the end... and perhaps take your camera! It would be interesting to see your city shots  oh, and have a happy birthday!

chester is fab.great shops and loads of places to eat out.museums etc etc lots to see and do.we often go to chester for a day out especially in the summer as we like to go to the river dee banks and watch the wildlife and just generally sit and watch the world go by.its a great attraction for lots of foreign tourists as they like the historical interests and the shops.its not too far from manchester either just a quick trip ;)

I'd say Edinburgh, great photo opportunities, excellent shopping, culture and history.

Can you get to Newmarket, super for a weekend, a visit to the Racing Museum, the National Stud, see the horses on the gallops etc.

If not, York or Edinburgh would be my favourites

Really do not think I am being biased,

Edinburgh is a beautiful, magical city, at every time of year :D .

Especially if you arrive by train -

I have met so many people who have fallen in love with the city instantly,

you walk out of Waverley to face the Castle and Princess street,

its SOOOOOOOOOOO breathtakingly beautiful...

Honestly, my Brother is much further travelled than I could begin to dream of and swears by Auld Reekie

(AND its lucky they built the Castle as close to the shops :p )

Anyway, whatever you decide every best wish for a brill Birthday,

hope this like may help if you are travelling by train:

definatley Newcastle.............ive had plenty of brilliant nights out there

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

I've now booked rail tickets to....

Edinburgh!!!

I felt strangely more tempted to travel North rather than South. However it was a close run thing, and after Helen's enthusiastic and descriptive response, I was very tempted by Bath. :)

Thanks everyone. All I needed was a bit of encouragement. It didn't take me long to decide once I'd read all your responses

Great stuff!! Looking forward to LOTS of photos!!! :D Hope you have a fantastic time!!

Liverpool is by far the GREATEST city in the U.K (perhaps even the world). Ask Jeff hutchings. He will tell you. He married a scouser because he realised it was one way he could become 'intergrated' into the friendliest community you will ever find.

PLUS, when you visit you can get yourself a new set of tyres for your car, a new stereo player, mobile phone, gardening tools, visit Ken Dodds house and have a jam butty. The list goes on. I am too old for the night life now, BUT I here it is amazing. Full of people almost as good looking as me. People like Ste Freemo. :D
