Milo was in red trap 1 yrd back from blue trap which was 1 yrd back from white trap . All three dogs trapped well . Milo followed the lure to the right behind dog in blue trap then came inbetween dog in blue trap and dog in white trap he then lent on dog from blue trap the rest of the way to the line . How should i trial him now to stop this happing again . Pam

Good advice that from Chris--i would do the same but only run the dogs about 50 yards ---but many times ---

pick a dog it can pass quickly

Then extend bit by bit --and then try three again --

learn them just one thing at a time -----repetition is the best way for good results--

steve

Hi pam, next time you trail Milo against Jess lets make the lad work. A couple yards start for jess against him is no good because he is to quick for her and he is catching her about a third of the way down the track and because he is still a pup in his mind he wants to play not race. So next time lets try five or six yards start for Jess so he as got to put some hard work in and make him race to catch her and bring it down to the finishing line that he catchs her by witch time the trail is over and he is back on the lead. If thats no good and he catchs her half way increase Jess's start or if he doesn't catch her decrease her start. With abit of luck it will sink in that he as got to race not play.

Peronally I'd take him back to solos for a while then give him somthing he can pass straight away for a couple of weeks if he's only a pup why rush ! :luck:

Have to agree I would make it easier not harder for Milo, back to a few solo's then if you can find something suitable i personally would do a few handslips with a dog by his side so he knows its there from the start, maybe only halfway or so at first and then if he passes or runs clean at the side then do easy trials full distance and then make it a little harder, racing should be fun for them at first not breaking there necks to catch something miles in front - just my way of thinking  Yes I am 'old fashioned' in the way i was taught to train dogs and 'old' now too

it was just a thought because Milo is now over 12 month now and is about 35lb. Jess is 30lb and half pedigree and when Milo is trailing against Jess he catches her very easily in about 30 odd yards and will not pass her justs sticks with her and plays and bumps her. Instead of 30 yards he catches lets make it 130 to 150 yards so it makes him race not play so its on our terms not his

Thanks for all the advice will be at Old Hall tomorrow . Will give him another go with Jess and see what happens.

See what your saying but don't think giving a dog a lot of yds start is gonna help Milo.Is he lure crazy Pam? If not plenty of playing on the lure wont hurt.Go back to shorter solos at first and play, play, play lol Then when your ready for running him with another dog if possible only give a yd to the other dog and put lure infront of Milos trap.A slow trapper wont hurt, because success breeds success hopefully he'll want the lure instead of playing with the other dog.Kepp his first races in company short maybe half the track.Just so he doesn't get tired. :luck:

Need to keep my answers shorter Karen, then I wont post the same thing as you.I didn't read it first honest lol

you are having the same problem as i am that.s why i went back to scrach with him more solo,s and now i just need another dog to trial with him to see how he goes he dont turn his head he just bump,s and he thinks its play time bett

A few shorter handslips in quick succession with the dogs side by side or Jess just being let off slightly in front with the lure set up in front of them means he would see the lure from the set off and hopefully focus on that and not the other dog and he wont have to think of trapping or maybe the front dog covering the lure and short slips wont give him long enough to think about doing playful things - again just an idea, everyone has different ideas and ways of puppy training just trying to be helpful

Good luck Pam and Milo and patience is a virtue or so they say

I'd try somthing different to be honest as you've said he's 35 lb and bigger dogs take a bit longer to mature take your time & he'll get there in his own time
