Good morning all,

Yesterday my little rescue whippet bitch pup arrived from Ireland and she is gorgeous, unfortunately herself and Louie (5 month old IG X Whippet) have had a few very nasty fights - resulting in blood being drawn and small tear in an ear. She is used to being in a crate so have been doing this but as soon as I let her out - Louie goes for it .... Merlin (3yr old entire male) will not leave her alone either keeps mounting her and howls constantly if I take her away. Not much sleep last night - 2 howling boys ......

Skye hasn't had a great start in life and apparently has had 5 homes already so I want to do whats best for this little honey .....

Sorry, forgot to say she is only 12 weeks old ................

Don't know if this will help in your situtation ... but the only time I ever had problems introducing a new rescue boy to my boys a wise friend told me to take them all out together somewhere really muddy, let them get as mucky as possible and then bath them all in unscented shampoo ... by the time we'd finished the new boy smelt just like the others which did seem to do the trick. I've no experience with a girl/boy mix though.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Annie

A good idea is to get leads on them and get out for a walk if you have some help . Walking dogs together helps them bond and feel part of the same group.

Are you sure they are really fighting , whippets do tend to play quite roughly , lots of noise etc ?

i had trouble with crispy not getting on with my mates chihuaha (stupid dog) but we took them to a neutral placce and they got on fine, since they've had no probs if they come to each others house. As far as the mounting goes try squirting him with a water bottle seems to work most times, good luck, hate to see whippets being non friendly :(

Poor little scrap, she's still so young at only 12 weeks old

By the sound of it, Merlin is trying to exert dominance over the situation

by mounting her.

Good advice above to exercise them together - this should help them to bond.

You need to bring them together gradually, and probably one boy at a time

with Louie first. As pack leader (and you now have a pack) you must have

enough control over Louie to stop him from being agressive. This will mean

some one to one between you and Louie first, I think, so that you can establish

that if you say "no" then you mean him to stop unacceptable behaviour immediately.

Has Louie been to puppy training? This would help him to socialise with other

dogs and Skye would also benefit. Have you got a friend who could take Skye

while you take Louie? It would give them both something to concentrate their

energy on rather than each other.

Louie is jealous and feels threatened. Unfortunately, the more you separate

Skye from the boys, the worse it will become as they will not perceive her as

part of their pack if she is in a crate.

Good luck with sorting this out :luck: :luck: Strangely enough, it is normally

always a bitch who is the boss in a mixed pack so hopefully Skye will grow into

the natural "top dog"

sorry iv not really got much advice for you, but my 2 girls (little sisters, so it is different) fight constantly,

most days it all end peacfully happily, but there is the odd occation wjere one will go a step to far and it can be nasty.

rips in the ear look the worst , (soooo much blood for a tiny cut)

at the end of they day its always forgoten and the snuggle up together.

if you give it alot of time and patence (sp) they will soon become friend. i do agree keeping them apart would only make the problem worse though.

i like the idea of the mud thing, sounds fun (w00t)

good luck :luck:

Don't separate them....it will only make the situation worse..it is all about pack leadership... be firm tell them off you are the pack leader....

get them out for a walk...excercise will help..... Zuco and biscuit are still sorting things out between them..give me a shout if you need help... remember she might only be 12 weeks but she comes with a small suitcase of baggage,,,,

Just to let everyone know that Star (formerly Skye) is being rehomed as my boys started fighting over her yesterday evening resulting in Louie needing vet treatment for some nasty puncture wounds. I am absolutely devastated as this little girl was truly a Star and deserves the best future possible. I feel I have let her down badly.....

Ena (at Second Chance Kennels, Thornton, Fife) has her now and the kennels have a very strict rehoming policy so I know that Star will find her forever home - which is why she is with Ena.

That is a shame Angie...second chance are very good.(as as long you don't have kids under 5) .....so she will be fine.....you must be gutted it didn't work out......

She is a stunner I'm sure she won't be long in waiting for a home

A lot of tears ..... There are a couple going to see the wee one this afternoon and they have already been homechecked ...

Angie

I can't believe you have given up on her, poor little thing, you only had her a couple of days.

Just hope she lands in a home better than the one you provided, sorry but this has really upset and angered me.

at the end of the day you have to think of the dogs already there

i have been lucky with bringing in pups/adult dogs into the pack

I'm sorry I've angered you but if I thought for one moment that my own boys would fight I would never have taken on Skye. I only want whats best for the wee one and my own and if that makes me a bad / irresponsible dog owner then I'm the one having to live with the tag ...

I think that its best to have it rehomed her sooner rather than later before she became too settled and it was a bigger upheaval for her. :luck: to Star/Skye - atleast she is safe.

I'm sorry you didn't give the pup a fair try . When you get a rescued dog or even just a pup with your existing dogs you must be prepared for the possiblity that it will cause problems .

It's fairly similar to having a child or several children you bring another baby home and there will be jealous behaviour and upset . Fortunately children are a lot more difficult to be rid of so most people have to persevere and make it work .

I have angered and upset people and I am sorry. Don't feel you have to let me know of your anger any more it has been taken onboard, therefore I will no longer be posting.

Angie

I'm sorry it hasn't worked out for you and Skye.

Would it be possible for those members who have successfully added to their "packs" to post a tip list to prevent this kind of thing happening. Many of you have over time added pups and rescues and I think it would be useful to have a FAQ thread that helps newbies with the prospect. The FAQ section has been invaluable to me - a new dog and whippet owner.

Just an idea
