I am hoping that someone may be able shed some experience/light on an awful situation we are experiencing.

On Monday morning when I let my beautiful Lulu  out, I was greeted with her not being able to stand. I raced her off to the vets where we have done bloods. She has no feeling in any of her legs.

The bloods have come back with nothing particularly out of the normal, she was a little dehydrated & her white cell count was low, which the vet says is normally a sign that she has fought of an infection - she has been fit as a fiddle on the outside up until Monday.

Lulu is only 9yrs of age - she is a fairly healthy girl who lives for food. She had a great weekend away with us at shows & hasn't had any bangs or crashes.

I was allowed to bring her home tonite as she started to eat & drink on her own, she is on a course of prednisone & I am praying that a day or so will change her around - she is not in any pain, but just looks sad - it is breaking my heart :(

Any advise or help will be welcomed, I love this wee girl with all my heart & am desperate for help.

Lynda

Oh no,poor Lulu & you :huggles:

I can't offer any advice, but has she recently had a booster?

A similar thing happened to someone's whippet after having one & he eventually made a full recovery.

No, no recent booster - it is weird, she was with us all weekend at the shows & happy as larry on Sunday nite & then Monday no feeling at all in her legs:-(

She is such a honey & am just praying that the prednisone is just taking a bit longer to work for her :(

aww how awfull sorry no advise but hope she makes a speedy recovery :huggles: :huggles: for you both :luck: :luck:

I sounds like a spinal injury, very similar to an injury my mother's Xanthe had a couple of years ago. Xanthe lost all feeling in her hind end. She gradually regained feeling in her hind legs and with hydrotherapy and a lot of TLC, has a fairly normal life now. She can get around, and can even sort of canter. She will never be shown again, but the old Xanthe is back - she bullies Dad for his cup of coffee and steals toys from her grandson!

Good luck with Lulu, and I hope all goes well.

Thanks for the perk up, I will keep fingers crossed she is on the road to recovery, unfortunately, it is all 4 legs she has lost, so she can only lie down :( My fingers are crossed & thanks for the luck wishes, I hope they work :))

Poor thing, sorry I have not much advice, but I do hope you start to see some improvement very soon :luck: - maybe the vet could refer her to a neurologist who might have more experience?

:huggles: :huggles: :luck:

:( Poor wee Lulu and what a shock you must have had. I hope she's back up and running soon. :luck: :luck:

The vet has said we can go to a specialist where they can do a spinal tap & also put a dye in & special xray's - the only thing is there are risks involved in doing this and there is no guarantee there will be a diagnosis. MRI was also offered, but again, no guarantee's.... Lulu hates the vets with a passion & I don't want to put her under any unneccessary stress.... man this is hard :(

Thank you everyone for your lovely wishes, I have just given her some scrambled eggs that she gobbled up and turned her over, poor wee thing can't even lift her head up, but she did enjoy her egg.

How awful - thinking of you :luck: :luck:

The dye and special Xrays are called a myelogram, and yes it can be an unpleasant thing to go through as humans often get terrible headaches afterwards so it's not unreasonable to expect that animals do too. :(

But an MRI is a really useful non-invasive diagnostic tool, and the only real risk is that she would need to be anaesthetised to do it as she has to keep perfectly still, and that is so much safer these days.

Good luck with what you decide to do. :luck: Is she insured?

No, no insurance - she actually had an injury when she was 10mths old, banged her head on my leg & that was it, she was in laa-laa land. We did extensive tests then & the specialists couldn't come up with a firm diagnosis, could have been the way she banged her head & the water on the brain, we had already spent just under $2,000 on her and the MRI would have been another $1500 as back then, the only one available was in the human hospital - we didn't take the MRI as we had a very young family & the money tree was fast evaporating! She came right on prednisone, so I am ever hopeful as then she wasn't able to walk, eat or anything, so you see - she is a very precious creature, to have massed the amount of wins she did in the show ring & produce fantastic kids on the racetrack, agility ring & show ring is really a miracle  We are very fortunate to have her in our lives, I aint ready for her to not be here yet :(

Sounds like a possible disk problem. It would have to be in the neck region if it is since all four legs are affected.

Hope you find out the cause and she has a speedy recovery.

Lynda - did they check her heart and lungs? Were her limbs cold?

:huggles: Lulu. Get well soon.

my old girl (13) has just recoverd from something like what you girl has, but she lost the feeling in her front leg from the knee down, i thought she had had a stroke but the vet said she was inflamed around her spine and that was pressing on the nerves, she gave me metacam to give her for 2 weeks and now 3 weeks to the day she is back to normal and all the feeling is back in her leg and foot although it did come back a bit at a time with the two middle toes being the last bit to get the feeling back! i was really worried about her as she didn't seem to improve for the first 10 days and i had to trust my vet although i was'nt convinced(sp) at all.

:huggles: i hope lulu gets better very soon :luck:

Yes, heart & lungs are fine, no the limbs were not cold. Had a rough nite, she goes into little stress modes, puffs & just doesn't know what to do with herself & cries.

I will check with my vet this morning & ask about the metacam - she is on Prednisone which is a steroid.

Thanks for all the well wishes, I just wish I could see into next week - my concern is that she doesn't get enough to eat or drink & her system starts to shut down on her, that would kill me - such a responsibility to do the right thing by her
