Help..Ruby's just eaten a pencil. Will the lead do her any harm? Or is it not really lead...graphite? Is that different and harmless

Bluebell has eaten several in her short life and they don't appear to have affected her :b

I machine graphite every day and your dog will be fine.

its only nasty if you breath the dust in long term

Pencils are mainly made for use by children, therefore it is expected they will be licked and sucked on, so they should not be very dangerous. Mine also eat pencil and biros. Look what Stella brought me today (w00t)

LOL! Is that a stick or a stick insect, Lida? And who did she want you to call ... Santa perhaps? She wants to put in an order for her own mobile phone.

Pauline - I would still keep a bit of an eye on her because of the wood in the pencil - if she got a bit lodged somewhere it might cause her some trouble.

Maybe a little dose of parafin oil to help everything slide out easily? My vet gave me parafin oil for one of mine once - I can't remember what it was that they'd eaten now though.

Thanks for the further replies. I will keep an eye on her, but I think she chewed the wood pretty thoroughly going by the bits left on the floor. I have had my mind set at rest re: the lead/graphite, especially being reminded of use by children.

Thanks all

:)

Meant to also say that graphite is just a carbon, it is not poisonous. :)

Lead is definitely not good for anybody to lick or consume, but there is no way it is in pencils nowadays.
