Molly had this a few weeks ago, I phoned the vets and they said not to give any other anti histamines apart from piriton. Just keep an eye on her, as long as she doesn't have any breathing problems I think she will be fine. Is benadryl active ingredient called acrivistane?
it says the active ingredient is cetirizine

Yes sorry, I also asked about this one and he said no to that too. I went to the 24hr asda to get piriton but they didn't have any so I rang my vet from my mobile and was reading off all the active ingredients and he was checking them all in his drug book. He said chlorphenamine was the only one. If she is playing around I'm sure she'll be ok.

looking up the two different drugs i think the reason that piriton is recommended is that it doesnt act in the same way as the other one(im not going to even try to spell it!lol)its something to do with how it blocks the affects of the bee stings/allergy reaction

hi sweetie

if she had this last night and had no other side effects i would think she will recover the same way - so long as her tongue doesnt look swollen and she has no breathing difficulties - the main thing to watch out for for stings - get some piriton from a chemist tomorrow for her - yes its fine to give to dogs.

is she itchy at all where the bumps are?

one of my borzois used to have same thing on his long nose every morning when he was a year old and as there were no other symptoms i didnt rise to taking him to the vets each time - i wonder if its a reaction to a plant you have in your garden such as an ivy of some sort?

have you watched her when she is outside - does she go under bushes or dig under any particular plant?

she may have found some ant nest also - these can sting dogs although now its late in the year that may not be quite so likely.

it also could be a stress reaction from asserting her level in the pack - sounds unlikely but i know this happens.

hope you have a good night

xx

yeh she seems fine in herself ,i was worried as it is much worst than last night ,i dont have any plants in my garden apart from the odd stingy nettle

just trying to help you solve this but dont want to overly worry you either!

a difficult one to solve at this time of night you poor thing but the main thing is to keep an eye on her and make sure her symptoms dont get worse

It could be something she's eated too Nicky . Has she had anything different for tea or a treat the last two nights .

I think the correct term for it is hives and a Boxer of ours got it once when she had a fly lick out of a glass of wine that someone left unattended (w00t) . We just kept a eye on her and the lumps went down by themselves . Another had the lumps and his ears went up like a balloon and that was because of freshly cut grass .

I have used Piriton on my dogs before and give a half tablet to my Shibas as a whole one makes them very sleepy . Their body weight is 20lb (10kg).

Hope that helps :huggles:

Nicky i had the same thing a while back with mine. Going out on the patio coming back & looking like this, i was at my wits end.

Last one was on the morning of a show, let the girls out fine, got to the show & Holly had this all over her body! (w00t)

Gave her a Piriton & it didnt work, ended up rushing her to the vet on call who administered a cortisone injection. :sweating:

I went through everything & in the end do you know what i came up with :- "

A ...................................................................TOAD

My only explanation as there were no chemicals used no bees or wasps or hornets to be seen BUT neighbours had a pond & we are reasonably close to a canal

just had good look at her now and it seems to be going slowley :sweating: :sweating:

Mine have had 2 seperate incidents of allergic reaction, one was at 1am when I'd let one out for a wee! Her face was massively swollen and she has pea-sized lumps of 'histamine' all over her body. We gave her Piriton and prednisolone which knocked it on the head straight away. Must admit the Piriton was something I added to my first aid box after coming across posts on here years back.

Theoretically, there is something else you could do which would inhibit the reaction which is to get your dog to release adrenalin (something whippets are good at doing anyway) It's the same reason why Nina's dog was given hydrocortisone as it counteracts histamine production wheras anti-histamines only block some of the receptors. How easy it is to get your dog psyched up enough is another matter (I just have to show mine a dog lead lol!) but if you've no piriton and it's a mild reaction then this could be an option.

Just wondered, could she possibly be finding hedgehogs in the garden and trying to pick them up? There are a lot of them around foraging at the moment, and I would have thought that if she was trying to pick one up the spines could cause this sort of reaction maybe? Just a thought. :b

i just need the sort of piriton we would normally use yes ???
Hi,

My Whippet cross has had exactly the same thing happen several times.Usually when we have been out and he has been sniffing in long grass etc.It frightened me to death the first time.I just gave him an anti histamine, and it went down before my eyes.No doubting it was an allergic reaction, but to what,i don,t know.

I do not think that hedgehogs' spines can give allergic reaction, although the wounds can get infected. Hope she will be fine. :luck: :luck: :luck:

hey - it occurred to me overnight that as i know sometimes this is stress related it could be the noise of the bloomin fireworks getting to her?

seems that if she had the same thing happen two nights in a row and never before???

what do you think?

hope shes ok now?

x

Aww, poor little pickle... i hope she is ok.

It might be an idea to spy on her when she goes out to see where it is she is going.

Is there a bee/wasp/ant nest of something in your garden.

I know Sidney when he finds something will go back time and again no matter how much bother he gets himself into.

I hope Tia is ok today

:luck: Hope Tia is feeling much better today Nicky :luck: :huggles:
