Hi Guys,

I'm new here, obviously! :wacko:

I came across this site when looking for info and chat forums with info about whippets. I've been reading alot of the post over the last few days, this place is really useful!

After months of hmmming and haaaing I have decided to get a dog of my own. So off I tottered to the rescue centres, dog pound and local vets to see what was on offer. I came across a beautiful 6 mth old "whippet cross" at the vet's. (They said she is a whippet cross, but to my inexperianced eye she looks all whippet to me.)

She had been brought into the vet about 2 weeks ago as a stray that had been found with a broken leg. For me, it was love at first sight! :wub: I patiently counting the days till I can bring her home.

She will have to get another xray to check there the leg is healing properly (the vet doesn't anticipate any further trouble with it). And whilst she is under she'll be getting neutered.

So, any words of advice or wisdom for me please? What can I expect on her arrival? How long will it take to recover from her op?

Hi Evie, welcome to K9

the only advice I can offer you is don't expect too much when you first bring your new girl home - set the routine as you want it, give her some space and let her find her own way

I'm sure it won't be too long before you have an affectionate, cuddly whippey!

and congratulations with your baby.

Hope her leg continues to heal well. Poor girl a broken leg sounds so traumatic and painful to go through.

As for neutering, she will bounce back really, really quickly. The vet will tell you to keep her quiet for a few days afterwards, which will be hard work as usually 2 days after the op they feel well enough to charge about and leap around. They are amazingly back to normal really fast when you consider what us humans are like we have the same op. The biggest worry is bursting stitches open in the early stages, hence the trying to stop them jumping onto furniture and so on in the first few days after surgery. Generally most whippets get over the op very quick and after a few days will be back to normal.

Latest update:

I contacted the vet's again today (they must be sick of hearing from me by now!) and they are hoping to carry out the Xray and neutering on Wednesday. I would hope she'll be able to come home on Thursday after that, just me guessing though. o

I was thinking of asking if it would be ok for the kids to meet her tomorrow after school. Do you think that would be a good idea, or would I just be making a pain of myself at the vet's?

I should just ask the vet if it will be ok. I'm sure they will be pleased that you are adopting her and not mind a visit at all as long as it fits in with their schedule and your children are quiet and don't upset any sick animals in other cages.

You will have to keep her on lead for quite a while anyway during leg healing process so that will give you some weeks to bond her with your family and show her the countryside before letting her off preferably in enclosed area as she is a stray and could take off. I should take that time to practise recall along with letting her settle herself in with her new home & family

She is for her xray and op today, the vet says he will ring me and let me know how it goes later on. I hope it all goes well.

Will certainly take the recover time to work on recall. I've also got a flexi lead for use before I'm confident enough to let her off lead. Which reminds me, I must look into micro chipping! :thumbsup:

The kids have been warned that when she gets home they will have to be gentle and kind with her as well as giving her some space to get used to it all. Also that she has to learn all the new commands. They are used to well behaved Guide Dogs coming to stay with us. A 6 mth old untrained whippet will be a bit of a change, lol.

I have the bed, toys and bowl out sitting waiting on her (yes, Nuts, I know! :blink: ) And am so looking forward to bringing home the new member of our family! :wub:

if you've had dogs before you'll know to be really careful with the flexi lead, especially with the kids - I had a nice scar on my leg for a couple of years from a friction burn I got off the cord of a flexi, when someones mad terrier ran round my leg to play with my dogs, would hate that to happen to soft kiddies skin, it hurt like anything on my old tough skin!

they can be a bit dangerous near roads too, and believe me, if anything can take you by surprise, its a whippet shooting off cos its spotted a fly blink on a hedge on the other side of the road (w00t)

No, I only use the flexi for dogs with poor recall where I would normally free run. The normal lead goes on for road side. I have my kids warned to be careful when the dogs are on the flexi. One didn't listen and found out the hard way.

I may have an old lunge line from the horses lying at my parents place, must see if I can dig that out.

no thats phoebe who is going to be 2 years old next month .i have some pics of kiplin under the whippet section,and he is doing amazingly well with all three girls. :thumbsup:
