I watched the racing tonight from Killarney and i never seen as many fallers in my life ! there was more horses left lying on the grass than i care to mention and i dont think they were for getting up again.

As i real horse lover im disgusted that theres any need for as many jumps or infact for the height theyre set, at any meeting. Flat racing is a lot fairer on horses and riders and the handicapper too. i can honestly say i loathe the jump season and i dont even watch the National but yet i love the Flat season. it amazes me that when a horse falls at a jump nobody seems to give a fiddlers fek, the crowd still cheer and bay at what evers still running, this disgusts me. how anyone of any sense can enjoy this is wayyy beyond me. i know this will cause a lot of controversay here but i couldnt give a shit..its cruel and barbaric and i personally would ban jumps. before you lot start..im not wrong, theres never been any jump meeting without horses killed and i dont see why this should happen .

dont quote the old shite about "oh but they love to jump..." because id reply..."do you think theyd jump if they knew theyre gonna die at the other side ....im fekn sure they wouldnt !!!!"

there isnt any need for the height of the fences of how wide, etc they are.

They do love jumping and i cant see any problem with lower fences ie - slightly higher than hurdle height, but more interesting than hurdles. It is a shame so many of these horses are killed/injured etc. And it soooo hard to rehome a x-racer. (i wouldnt have one  )

I love watching high level eventing, but im afraid im a softy i couldnt jump my horses over 3'3" Cross country fences (they mean too much to me) at College we had to fence judge a XC fence (watch and mark if the go clear etc) and in the intermediate and advanced class 2 horses died :( ....... one of the horses died at the fence b4 me, and i saw the lot. it changed my views for ever  I came to the conclusion that the horses still enjoy jumping any height so we just go and enjoy ourselves now without any risk to any of us.

I admit i watch alot of racing.... all racing. and im sure i would still watch/bet if they made these fences easier on the animals.

leave the high jumps to show jumping where at least the fences will fall and not the horses

im not a fan of jump racing either and having been to quite a lot of races, including aintree with a vet as his helper, you wouldnt believe what goes on back at the stables after the race is over, some of the horse are so hurt that they are shot but because they'v not fallen on the corse the public dosent know about them :(

they also have thier legs 'patched up' so that they can race another day!

and the other thing (im on a roll now!) i hate is the look in their eyes :( i get horse and hound and i cant look at the racing pages, i could cry when i see their eyes, horses are wonderful giving animals, my own horse was a showjumper whom i bought cheapish as she had stopped jumping, she was just 7 when i got her and had been jumped almost every weekend for two years! i have owned her 8 years now and she has always jumped for me but even now she still has a lot of bagage which breaks my heart, she will never forget those days where she was badly beaten :(

sorry to go off topic but it really pi***s me off

this is my girl

I never watch it, think its cruel

Why is it we can ban hunting with dogs and yet let this treatment of horses continue? I am not in favour of banning anything, but do agree with the others that a more humain arrangement of fences should be adopted. How can anyone enjoy a spectacle where the outcome will certainly result in the unneccessary suffering of such a beautiful creature. The suggestion that there are fatalities at virtually every meeting is staggering if it is true.

To quote a certain K9 - er lol ' WHADDA LOADVE HANGY DOWN BLOKE BITS '

 Such a sweeping generalisation there Stormster ..................... just for the record though, without getting into facts and figures and mathematical type dull stuff, having worked in one of the most highly regarded equine veterinary practices for 4 years, I can safely say that there were more fatalities from flat race courses than there ever were from National Hunt tracks. :- "

In general, horses running on flat courses are younger, with less well developed muscles and bones. It is these poor horses who suffer irreparable tendon injuries and stress fractures who end up being destroyed. Just because you dont see them crash to the floor, doesnt mean they are able to race another day. In my eyes, making and pushing a two or three year old, at breakneck speeds, with the hindrance of a jockey on its back, is far far more cruel. :(

SORRY I STILL SEE IT MY WAY. JUMPING IS NOT NEEDED TO PROVE HOW FAST A HORSE IS AND AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS A RACE ITS NOT "SHOW JUMPING".

well then peony my chum from far away in a foreigners land...how come ive never seen a horse fall at a flat race.. ? maybe they just bounce up again..do they ?

ITS CRUEL ON A HORES..END OF

HELP IM ABOUT TO BE EQUESTRIANISED BY PEONY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.......................!!!

You must remember though Stormy, that races run over fences are a lot slower than those over the sticks and the skill required is different. Over the fences, the horse is required to have balance, where on the flat its the same as a human sprint .......... pure speed rather than anything involving education and stamina.

Dont forget that a lot of racehorses these days are schooled extensively ................ just look at Henrietta Knights methods .......... her horses have a very good education which involves dressage movements, all designed to build up a horses muscles and enable it to jump cleanly and safely.

LOL just seen that whilst I have been composing, you have been banging away at your keyboard, in your foreign country.

Re - read my first post please .................... just because a horse doesnt fall, doesnt mean they dont get injured. As a comparison, tenuous as it maybe, did Colt fall when he damaged his gracilis????

Now shut ya face and let me have the last word ;)

exactly its about speed not about the jumping you dont see greyhounds jumping these horses are far too young and inexperienced imo so much money is pumped into breeding such a well bred horse its ashame a bit more care isnt taken :(

if only they were true thats a load of rubbish they still reach speeds of 30mph plus and tire quickly also with dumb arse jockeys that dont know when enough is enough what chance do these poor animals have of making it home safe :(
