hi there, I wonder if anyone can offer some advise? we have fourwhippets the parents and two pups (now 11months). There were eight pups in the litter and from a very early stage we took the pups outside at regular intervals - on waking after food etc., and they all got into the way of relieving themselves outside - even the pups who went onto their new homes at 9 weeks were choosing to go outside - and have been very good - however our wee girl will always choose to go inside - the conservatory is the dog house and the floor is easily cleaned, but she will actually go out of the house, through the patio and in the dog flap and the 'pee' inside! If she is out on a run, lots of little toilets like she is spraying the teritorry - but if it is raining - she won't venture out.

We have tried, taking her a walk on the lead up in the garden, and she will do it - or watching her intently for signs so that we can get her outside and we praise her when she done her stuff - but every day we find a little present from her - it doesn't matter if we are in or out of the house - she was choosing to 'pee' on one the the beds at one point - and we were in the house ? consequently we close all the doors now so she doesn't have freedom of the house - and our back door is always open so that all the dogs can get outside if they want to play in the garden - or they are in the conservatory if we are out and have access to outside through the dog flap.....

We are getting exasperated now as we have renovated the whole house to accommodate our dogs more than anything....besides, praise, encouragement and physically putting here outside and standing over her till she does her buisness - anyone have any other advise?

yours hopefully

It really does sound as though you have done everything according to the book. This type of problem can be extremely exasperating. :( :b

The first thing I would do is to have her checked out by your vet to see if she has a mild URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI). Sometimes if the urine is too acidy it can irritate the bladder. Once you have eliminated this as a cause, then you can look at other possible reasons for her behaviour.

Do you get the impression she is doing it to get attention or to enforce her role in the pack? I think it is important to distinguish between a plain BAD HABIT and problem that has a "psychological" reason. You know what I mean. In a multidog household I have found that these things are very often a manifestation of an underlying INSECURITY of an individual dogs position in the household (or pack).

Has she been SPAYED? With a very small number of spayed bitches incontinence can be a problem, but don't worry there is medication that can be given if this is the cause of your little girl's problem.

Good Luck, Hang in there . . . .

Another thought I had was are you cleaning the area with an appropriate cleaner to remove the smell . There are products available to neutralise the smell so she is not returning to the same area attracted by the scent :b

thats what i was thinking :b

before we moved, we were in a flat and ruby and star had got in the kids bedroom a few times when they were young and pee'd. it was right beside the front door, which is were they would go if you didnt catch them quick enough,

anyway once they were almost house trained we lifted flooring in the hall and put down some new lino, they very very rarely peed in the hall after that, but if the kids door was left open the would go in there and do their stuff even if they had just came in from a walk

the kids had carpet in their room so i put it down to smell, as there was no other explination for it

since we have moved, we havnt had any problems, (except when they had a tummy bug) :x

definatly check your cleaner is good enough to take away the smell, and see if that helps

We had this problem with one of our rescues. We acquired her when she was about 10/12 months old and she would pee and poo anywhere. I put it down to not having been house-trained in the 'home' that she had been taken from but as time went on, it became obvious it was an anxiety issue. Anxiety can happen with any dog, even a much loved one that has been in its home since a puppy and, as lorna anne says, is far more likely to happen in a multi-dog household.

I just persevered with putting her out, never scolding her and cleaning thoroughly. Don't use bleach (the ammonia in it attracts dogs and especially cats) or pine (dogs will soil where they smell this) cleaners. If you don't want to use a proprietary cleaner use BIOLOGICAL clothes washing liquid as the enzymes kill the smell. The real turning point with our girl was crating her when we couldn't watch her. She wee'd in her crate (never poo'd) a couple of times and then it suddenly stopped and we haven't had a problem since. It is really frustrating but good luck.

thanks so much for your replies...we have tried numerous cleaning product from the pet shop and we have lifted every carpet - sealed and stained the foorboards - yet she will do her stuff we very rarely see her doing it, but occasionally and more recently we have and she seems quite proud of her actions....which makes me think it may be her way of interacting as mentioned in the posts - we do try to make a fuss of her (since her brother passed two months ago) - she does like to be on her own a lot - she is not spayed yet - 11 months or there abouts and not had her first season yet - she is pretty tiny in comparison to the rest of the family - but not the runt of the litter.

will take her for a check up also just to make sure - but maybe time, effort and reassuring her may win through...

thanks

ecknell :)

I totally empathise with this. My bitch Millie has been very, very hard to housetrain.

She is 13 months old now. My dog is was house trained from early on but she has resisted all of the coaxing I have given her.

We can go on a 45 minute walk she will wait until she comes back and then disappear when I'm not looking and pee. She rarely poos in the house now. If is' raining she simply will not go out. Sometimes she will mark everywhere outside and then still save some for when she gets back

In desperation, I have resorted to puppy pads to keep the mess down and at least she is using them but it's a vicious circle (and very expensive).

She has been checked by the vet for UTI but tests came back negative. It really is frustrating. Vet suggested kidney scans etc but I'm convinced it's a psychological thing. I can't crate her as she is so hyperactve she turns it over if left alone. Really don't know what to do like yourself.

Sometimes with smaller breeds they can get confused as to what is in and what is out when they have too much space or constant access to the outside.

Maybe returning to basics for a while. restricting space allowed for a while and taking her out after feed, sleep and play and staying with her until she has performed...Good Luck!
